Open Rights Group

The Open Rights Group (ORG) is an organization founded in the U.K. in 2005 which aims to promote and protect digital rights and freedoms.

Its broad focus is on the impact of digital technology on the rights and freedoms of citizens and in this takes interest in areas such as copyright law, data retention and open data.

ORG lobbies UK and EU government for less restrictive copyright law which it believes would lead to greater innovation and creativity by allowing others to build on the works and ideas of others.

It supports reform of the conditions on which copyright term extensions are applied and is against Digital Rights Management (DRM) methods that restricts how consumers can use content that they have purchased.

According to the Open Rights Group, the UK's Data Protection Act does not comply with with EU law and wants the EU to enforce stronger protection of the privacy of citizens. It is against the proposed extension of data retention which would allow and require Internet service providers to monitor email and web traffic and advocates for regulation of private sector network interception.
