Sharp announced today a new optical IC chipset (codename: GA100T8R6MZ) that is capable of 60x CD-R, 60x CD-ROM and 16x DVD-ROM (reading) speeds. It will come out end of June at the price of 220 Yen. SHARP believes that such recorders could come end by the end of this year...
The writing time ,compared to existing 40x recorders, can be shorten to two thirds as SHARP said. Last SHARP's chipset can change the laser power during writing.

I personally quite don't understand all the hurry with the max writing speed.
Let's calculate some rough estimations. These are not real measured values and the effect of CAV technologies is ignored:

74 min / 12x = 370 seconds
74 min / 24x = 185 seconds (saves 185 seconds)
74min / 32x = 135 seconds (saves 50 secs more)
74min / 40x = 111 seconds (saves 24 seconds)
74min / 60x = 74 seconds (saves 37 seconds)

As we can see from thes rough estimates that the time actually saved is not that significant, even though the write speed sounds like a big boost to productivity. Then increased speed naturally brings the media problems, as well as mechanical vibration problems to the recording.
