this product is very poor because it can't pick up all stations in your area and RCA knows this box has a problem and won't back it up by recalling it and sending the upgraded version.bought this product in 7/2008,did'nt know about this problem until 2/17/09.

- CECB certified (Is this a certified Coupon-Eligible Converter Box)
CECB stands for Coupon-Eligible Converter Box. This means that a box that is CECB certified is eligible for U.S. government coupon which is worth $40. Households can apply to get such coupons via U.S. DTV web page and then use the coupon to get CECB certified DTV converter for free.
- EPG (Electronic program guide (EPG))
EPG stand for Electronic Program Guide and is an on-screen guide to scheduled broadcast television or radio programs. EPG allows the viewer to browse upcoming programming with the remote control.
- Recorder (Integrated video recorder (HDD))
If the DTV converter has a built-in recorder it can be used to record broadcasts.
- NTSC tuner (Integrated analog over-the-air tuner (NTSC))
NTSC tuner is an analog tuner which can pickup over-the-air (OTA) broadcast signals. The tuner will become obsolete on Feb. 17, 2009, as the USA switches to digital only OTA broadcasts.
- Analog cable tuner (Integrated analog cable tuner)
Analog cable tuner is required to receive the analog cable broadcasts. Cable companies are not obliged to switch over to digital transmissions on Feb 17, 2009, and thus the analog tuner can still be of use in some regions.
- Smart antenna (Smart antenna)
A smart antenna system combines multiple standard antenna elements with a signal-processing capability to optimize the reception pattern automatically in response to the signal environment. In other words, smart antenna saves the trouble of manually adjusting the antenna for optimal reception.
- Closed Captions (Support for Closed Captions (CC))
Support for closed captions means that the digital-to-analog converter box can convert over-the-air digital closed captioning for display on analog TV sets. According to the FCC rules all DTA converters are obliged to support this feature.
after a week of owning this item, it started muting most of the channels. i have had this for two weeks now and only have 3 channels that are viewable in digital. when it is off, i can pick up over 20 channels in analog. I thought this digital swich over was supposed to increase the available channels. the only good thing i can say about this product is that the remote is easy to use. RCA has really gone downhill.
It has only three short-comings. I wish there was a way to turn off the channel display that comes up when the channel is changed. It stays on way too long. I'm three miles from the television transmitting antennas and am having trouble with some channels (9.x) dropping out. I've had LOTS of trouble with support from RCA in getting a replacement remote. There is no reference to this product on their web site. Other than these things the product itself is very good and very easy to use.
I bought this item at Wal Mart at the end of May and now it is dead. My daughter has the same model converter box and it also died. When I contacted Wal-Mart about an even exchange, it was past the 90 day return policy. However, the service counter did mention that many of these units are defective and have been returned. Are we also bailing out RCA? - poor product and unreliable, inferior quality, losing sound, changing languages without any input from me, and video constantly breaking up. It has been a hassle and headache. I have written RCA and the FCC, besides visiting with the FCC on the phone. So far I have received no positive results - and supposedly this unit has a year warranty. Does anyone have a phone # for RCA?
Bought the RCA DTA800 B1 back in July and now I have to send it off to be fixed and I have to pay the shipping to them. This is not something that I wanted to buy but if we want to watch TV we have to have it or Cable or something else but when I called RCA about this I was told by the person that her tax dollars bought it for me. NO her tax dollars didn't but the government wanted to do this change so she can blame the goverment for it I didn't like the way she spoke to me concerning this and that we are having to ship an item back to get it fixed when we only bought it 5 months ago. What do they think everyone has money to waste?
Purchased from Wal-Mart a RCA DTV converter box. It worked well for 5 months, then died. Could no find any way or place to get it repaired or replaced. Is RCA trying to go out of business by selling and not servicing poor products?
Bought one (w coupon) at Wal-Mart, and it was DOA. Four months trying to exchange at Wal-Mart but they never have any in stock. Contacted RCA who routed me to company X who routed me to company Y. Ended up dealing with "Venture Electronics" who gave RMA # for replacement. Now they call and say "pay us $20 and we will return your repaired unit". What the hey, this was a DOA unit for exchange. Authorized no "repair". Holding my unit hostage, gave me garbage for a phone number to call, letters go unanswered. Bottom line, this is not a reputable product and RCA is no longer a company worth doing business with. Whom to complain to?
Im surround by broadcast TV antennas some are just 5 miles away I get 50 to 60% signal strength but it still drops the signal. For now I have gone back to analog TV again tell this RCA smart antenna comes out. For now I have a house antenna system that works great for analog TV
Easy to set up, great remote, intuitive layout, Info button on remote great. Upstairs using a GE Optima able to pick up Channel 41 from Eagan (~40 miles), downstairs I use a Radio Shack 15-1892 (amplified directional) for same reception. Remember digital very sensitive to metal or reflections, watch air ducts in walls. Can not rest electronics on DTV box or will scramble picture. Smart Antennae from RCA/Audiovox coming out soon (RCA ANT2000) will probably solve any directional issues especially for those surrounded by TV Stations. For those other DTV Boxes I have found the RCA ANT1500 outstanding.
Not really a big fan of this contraption. It doesn't pick up channels with my large rabbit ears that my small antenna alone could pick up. good thing that coupon put this thing down to a bargain price.. $50 for that is way too much.
Got this baby at Wal Mart for $49.87 -40 (coupon). After taxes it was $13.98 ( they charge tax on the pre coupon amt). It worked beautifully on rabbit ears with a 75 ohm balun.Picture was as good as a dvd. Reception was way better than analog rabbit ears only. Can't complain for $13.98
I only paid 12$ after rebate for this product. The reception on this is so bad that it is non-funcitonal. Other recivers get 80%-93% signal where this only gets 60% on one antenna (amplified outdoor roof mounted) and 45% on an antenna that others fet 75%-82% RCA is unviewable on either anttena as a result.
Excellent picture. Have a house wired for a single outside antenna, and has improved picture quality throughout house.
EPG is disappointing. It is slow in updating and only shows current and next program. Not anything like Guideplus.
