The site has an approximate of 100,000 Finnish users daily and simultaneous torrent downloads could rise up to five times the amount.
Dangerous.. Allow a state to block access to one site and they will think they have the right to dictate what citizens have a right to see.
This will (if passed) set a dangerous precident across Europe, where many governments care less about citizens freedom to access information rights than they do about foreign business profits.
We need to start using our blogging power to expose these politicians for the bought out in the pockets self serving a$$holes they really are.
If the western democracies were truly "democratic" these lobbyist groups would have no purpose as the politicians would not be allowed to listen to them.
As Finland is the home of a huge number of FOSS users I expect to hear their voices raised in protest.. Not all the links on TPB are for illegally distributed boring hollywood junk, there is a lot of public domain and FOSS software there as well.
Piracy and pedophiles are the scare monger tactice used by governments to take away are civil liberties on the net, just as the fake war on terror is doing to the American constitution and world wide fascism and stealth dictatorship with the common phrase "if you're doing nothing wrong you have nothing to hide" but now you are guilty until proven innocent while big brother observes and dictates what information we are allowed to view.
Did i hear you cry PROXY SERVER? a great free one can be found here: http://www.torproject.org/

Do you really think thats going to stop piracy from happening in finland..fat chance people are still gonna do it.. proxies
Finland really is a backwards, F'ed up country trying to take away the voice and liberties of the very citizens that put those bastards in office. Their militant efforts to stop the so-called 'rampant piracy' (go figure in a teeny-tiny little country like that, nothing is rampant) is a small example of how they will attempt to structure that country in years to come. They're following suit with the U.S.............except citizens of the U.S. will raise HELL since our voices carry more weight regarding how things pan out.
..."mirror site" for Pirate Bay coming soon?
Meaning a "exact copy" of Pirate Bay but named different...
maybe "yab etarip" or something!!
And if the people in Finland wanted to find the "new"
"Pirate Bay" all they would have to do it "Google" for it,
and the links would come up!
Simple, one web site is shut down, another one opens up!
Cheers!
wtf do they think will happen? that piracy will stop?
the only reason they're doing this is because they're not ballsy enough to stand up to america. they're just gonna lay down and get f***ed up the a** at the expense of their people. and whats to say people aren't gonna find a way around it??
it's just ridiculous. nobody will ever stop piracy. it's like a fat kid trying to work out to get fit. the corporations and government have been greedy and overstuffed themselves so much they have gone past the point of no return. now that they look bad, they're trying to fight back.
well stop trying. you fail.
The Pirate Bay sucks anyway. Yes was one of the biggest torrent hustlers once upon a time, but now its just flagged by mindless BitNoobs. Who do not know of the better alternatives like the now deceased Demonoid. Which I hope is coming back soon.
:D Anyway at least Pirate Bay is acting like fodder for the other more popular torrent sites. Mininova don't seem to have much trouble these days.

NONE of those officials want to get rid of lobbyists, then they couldn't get filthy rich from being a politician.

Originally posted by BluRay:the thing with pirate bay is that it is its own tracker, although i personally liked mininova's interface better. in my experience, tons of the torrents on mininova are on pirate bay's tracker. i guess that makes mininova an indexing site? anyway, if the pirate bay goes down, mininova might just have much trouble.

@ SnowLock
Mininova can be considered an "indexing" site, but it is wrong to say most of their torrents are tracked by TPB.
In my experiences I have found that the ones tracked by TPB are also simultaniously tracked by another 3-5 trackers. I think this is because Mininova offers many "Open Trackers" when uploading a torrent.
If you want a "real" example of an indexing site, I would say torrentz.com and torrentspy.com(as crap as it is) are standalone indexing sites, as all they do is search other sites mostly.
If you look carefully when uploading a torrent onto Mininova when they give you a list of OT [open trackers] TPB is on the list; http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
Maybe this is the reason why you find many torrents tracked by TPB, because from my other experiences I could find jack-all on TPB, but found TPB tracked torrents on Mininova.
Also Mininova is a tad bit more family friendly that TPB, which is haunted by sad and lonely M*****F**** advertising themselves on FindAmateCrap.crap.
With the amount of trackers Mininova offers on uploading, and the amount that arent listed, when TPB goes down, it will not affect Mininova the slitest.
