Samsung unveils 8GB music smartphone South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung has unveiled a new Smartphone that is equipped with an 8GB HDD. The SGH-i310 is advertised as having the ability to store up to 2,000 MP3's (4MB each). Samsung is the first to adopt a hard disk drive into mobile phones and has launched three models equipped with a hard disk drive; the world's first 1.5GB HDD embedded phone (model: SPH-V5400), the world's first 3GB HDD embedded phone (model: SCH-V7900) and the world's first 3GB HDD Music Smartphone (model: SGH-i300).
The i310 comes with the latest version of Windows Mobile 5.0 for Smartphone which allows users to view files and easily carry their music library with them. This Windows Mobile 5.0 enables users to sync the playlists, songs, and videos from their personal PCs so that the experience with the i310 is identical to the users' personal computer. It also offers USB 2.0 and Plug & Play feature which allows the phone to be utilized as a removable hard disk. Businessmen and students can easily store and transfer files to/from their computers in any format conveniently.

The i310 has all the latest features including a 2 megapixel camera with flash, microSD slot, document viewer and TV output. Users can record video with the 2 megapixel camera in high quality resolution. "With the combination of first-class technology and premium design, Samsung has led the industry by offering various features of mobile phones. With great improvements in mobile storage, Samsung will continue to introduce a variety of useful functions for mobile." said Kitae Lee, President of Telecommunication Network Business of Samsung Electronics.

The i310 will be shown to public at CeBIT from March 9th to March 16th. It will be introduced in Europe market during the second half of this year.

hard disk mobile phone...i wonder how long that will last, especially since cell phones take a lot of abuse.

27.3.2006 16:20

I don't think that they're the first. What about Nokia's N91 w/4gig hd? Unless thats a flash but I doubt it.

37.3.2006 16:30

N91 does have a 4GB HDD yes, most of text above is from samsung press release.

47.3.2006 20:22

its just nice to see other cell phones adopting other mp3 playing methods, instead of having to use that crap itunes.

57.3.2006 21:16

I like the sound of this phone :) I may hold back purchasing my phone later this yr to mayb another few yrs depending on what nokia brings out too compete with this. I know they have the N91... but wat else can nokia do.. Cause Samsung is really clossin the gap :)

Eventually, cell phones will become your computer. It's already starting...

However...while it is a very cool phone, I'm really disappointed that it is not a PPC/Smart phone. BUT then again I love Nokia phones! Hopefully that's a touch screen on it and not like Blackberry with that dumb wheel. I HATE Blackberries (I was so hoping for them to get shut down!).

Well somehow I screwed that up... borhan9 (Senior Member) 8 March 2006 2:16 depending on what nokia brings out too compete with this. I know they have the N91... but wat else can nokia do.. Cause Samsung is really clossin the gap :)

@rosedog My God!! I just saw the pic of the nokia phone :) man thats just a mini pc... I dont really want that...its too complicated and makes it less user friendly... The phone I'm currently waiting for to hit the Australian Market is the Nokia 6681. Thats a nice lil phone with all the features u would ever need... Here is how it looks... Now thats what i call a simple and user friendly looking phone...

118.3.2006 06:47

With the price it will cost you could probably buy a 20gb hdd mp3 player. -Mike

They could add a pair of arms to cellphones to all I care, that would not change the fact that the reception still sucks. Maybe they should perfect, what they originally intended a phone to be.

138.3.2006 07:29

Borhan9, I have had that phone for nearly a year.. and it still hasn't hit the Aussie markets yet? Damn, you guys are way behind!

148.3.2006 08:39

well... i definatly cant call up the honey's and take pictures of naked chicks on the spot with my NANO..... so this definatly beats the competiton by far.... now my broke ass just needs to scrap up the $bling-bling$

This phone i first saw when i was in india they had it there and it was cheap... but i wasnt really comfortable buyin it there cause theres no real garentee or waranty even if they say international warranty etc... I can purchase it from the net now but i want to c if it comes out anytime this year at all... The main reason we are soo behind is cause we still have old phone systems in australia that have not been upgraded in a lot of yrs... so much for being a first world country :)

168.3.2006 13:54

Ok but I have to say a cam and a flashlight on a phone is essential, they're crazy!

178.3.2006 18:26

I really don't care for phones like this, but i really think that it should be flash memory instead of a hdd.... if CRapple can make a 4 gig flash device, you surely could double that... one drop of that thing, there goes your contact lists, mp3's, ect

188.3.2006 20:11

So i guess within five years i will get a hardrive phone. Dang, i just spend $300 on ipod last month.

199.3.2006 00:07

Any chance it can play XviD or DivX video? Or a codec that could enable playback of MPEG-4 vido. H.264 or X.264 would also be awesome.

209.3.2006 00:47

Who would want to watch a video on a phone anyways. Its just too small.

219.3.2006 05:45

It's a cool idea but I don't see why you'd want one. As much crap as cell phones go through it'll be broke in a matter of a month or two and then you'll have to buy a new one. Hell for that I could just buy a p.o.c. phone and get an ipod and come out easier.

229.3.2006 06:15

Sandisk just announced that they have made an 8gig CF card but the cost right now is, I believe $600. It cost is expected to drop to $100 in a year.

239.3.2006 09:05

Thats neat so what Portections shcemes dose this monster have? *L*

249.3.2006 13:43

protection schemes? What do you mean you wanna run your own homebrew? it is windows mobile, after all

259.3.2006 14:19

dvdsndict just wodner if its DRM'd it seems everything is going to be drmed! LOL,I would not be suprised if the music indutry sues the tech industry for helping pll copy songs 0-o

269.3.2006 18:05

OK. SOme kidding around! How big is it???....

2712.3.2006 23:49

as far as cost goes, every tech junky can suck it up. as far as abuse goes, only ppl who could take care of thier ppc's and ppl whose parents dont care what they spend on thier irresponsible children will get this. but a hdd phone is a lil crazy seeing as flash memory is growing daily, but what most are neglecting is the insane amount of battery power it will take to spin a hard drive just to play mp3's (a flash ram type cache would be a good idea) and to power a phone. that being said... this phone gave (gives) me a boner!

Just wondering; what services is this SGH-i310 supposed to support? Sprint / Nextel I hope. and when are they planning to make it available to us gringo's in the states? Oh yeah, thanks for the info by the way.

2914.3.2006 13:17

just think of how manypeople will be geting rolled for these

3015.3.2006 05:13

SQUIZZLE YOUR RIGHT MINI COMPUTERS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HANDS...I HAVE OWNED A MITSUBISHI,MOTOROLA AND SEVERAL MODELS OF NOKIA,HAVE NEVER OWNED A SAMSUNG BUT I THINK I MAY SOON DO SO IF THIS PHONE TECHONOLGY SUCCESSFULLY MAKES ITS IN THE MARKET. EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT A FAN OF MP3'S AN OTHER FEATURES ON MOBILE PHONES WHICH REQUIRES ALOT OF BATTERY POWER CONSUMPTION...MANUFACTERS HAVE TO IMPROVE THE TECHNOLOGY FOR BATTERY LIFE...I STILL WILL BUY A SAMSUNG.
