Sony Debuts New PS2 in Japan

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 06 Nov 2007 6:59 User comments (35)

Sony Debuts New PS2 in Japan Sony is set to release a third generation PlayStation 2 in Japan before the holidays with a built-in AC adapter that weighs only 25 ounces.
The new, lighter model will sell for 16,000 yen ($140 USD), equal to the price of the current model.

Sony has given its support for the PS2 until at least 2010, and with the company losing significant amounts of money per PS3 console sold, the PS2 is crucial to keeping Sony's gaming division afloat.

and if they launched the real PS3 at 400 they would not be having such high losses ><

26.11.2007 20:53

I thought they took a major loss by putting it at the price it originally was at?

36.11.2007 21:02

they should have started at 400 for the ps3 anyway there's a lot of time before the next generation so there's alot of time to sell ps3's

are you kidding?ps2 started off the same way.it was losing money per console sold.and btw ps2 is just helping them, plus ps3 is catching up and 360 is losing its lead.

Everybody tell everyone not 2 buy one so Sony cant support the PS3, that way the internet will be PS3 fag free.... oh what bliss that would be.

Funny how people begin egging the sony fanboys on nonchalantly, and act like such elitists about it.

gamespot reported that the newer PS2 would be $99, as Sony wants to keep their lead & eventually convert everyone over to the PS3. Maybe they got it backward? Perhaps the current PS2s will be selling for $99 @Christmas the newer PS2 will sell for the higher price? That seems the most reasonable. I can walk into almost any store & they have a dozen of the PS2 & maybe a few of the other systems.

kinda well done on sonys part
the new 40gb model doesn't have backwards compatibility nd its just as cheap to get a new ps2 as well it is to get a top model ps3

157.11.2007 07:54

YEah but there moving away from the ps3 to support the ps3 WTF. they should get there act together and emphisize on there new console.

They can make all the playstation 2's in the world. thats not going to help game development for the new console.

And yes i love egging fanboys on it so fun to watch them argue back in forth for half of the post.

anyway the only good thing i can see coming frome this is more platform development it might even lead too a new PSP2. who know time will tell.

167.11.2007 07:56

Is the new PS2 backwards compatible or did they forget to put that into its specs?

Sony is losing money on the PS3 because they promise but dont deliver. Gotta push Blu-Ray!

177.11.2007 09:13

PS3 - Blu-Ray = Profit

all sony can seem to do right is shrink old models.

I don't understand your question. This new machine is already a Playstation 2 (not a PS3) and is compatible with PS2 and PS1 games. BCW is not needed since it's already a PS2 machine.

197.11.2007 15:40

only 25 ounces? I wonder if some of the mod geniuses out there like Benheck can make an even smaller form factor. Having a Walkman sized PS2 would be great.

It's rhetorical. :-)

Hard to believe that the biggest threat to Ps3 is actually the Ps2! So many great games..ico, shadow of the colossus, god of war, dark cloud 2, ff12..and now that the "Magic Gate" memory card modchip is out...all the moreso!

I don't get it... This is a great idea. Why not continue a very successful product to make money for another? This will probably sell double of what they do today just as the new PSP did in Japan, even though it was basically the same thing.

237.11.2007 22:16

Good idea, but there are a lot of people that already own a ps2. So it may not be there trumpet card. as i like too put it. the Peter is borrowing from Moses trick doesn't always work.

if there sales arn't as good as they'd like them to be. they will only be digging there grave deeper.

Becuse they are letting their long term product whiter as they run around selling stuff off and propping up all the wrong places.

If they would have focused on the PS3 got it with BWC at a reasonable price (350-400) they would be losing less money now than all this backsliding and headless chicken shtted ness.

I would like the PS3 to do well but they cosntalntly prevent it from improving.

Ya most of you would like to see a 360 with a PS3 controller if you want it for 350-400. Without Blu-Ray the PS3 would have all the stupid mistakes that the Xbox will eventually have, causing them to screw some people here and there. You might as well have called it the PS2.5 with a revolutionary on/off and eject button.

Don't you mean WII controller?
The tilt and play pad for the PS3 is cute at best, stupid at worst, so much so when they force that as a option int eh game when the analog sticks would handle the situation better.

And frankly the PS3 would be 200 by now i it didn't have BR and since the HD is not limited it would have handled caching better, but frankly no matter what sony dose the PS3 needs to be 400 and not the handicapped 40GB BS and chips version.

I'll give MS poitns for improving the 360 as they go and take them all away for not fixing the damn thing, the PS3 has only lossed points from sonys arrogance...

I agree that Sony has made some bad marketing choices but yall have completely jumped off the cliff. M$ has had just as bad a run at the next gen market as Sony what hurts Sony the most at this point is pushing this system more on the blu ray side then gamer side. The 40 gig version is fine its basically in the league with the elite 360 minus the 120gig drive with blu ray and no hardware failures aka 3 rings of death or overheating for $400 if that isnt a good enough deal then yall smoking some hard core shiznit. Since day one yall be wining about the price they dropped it twice and even made it cheaper for the broker consumer and yall still find more ways to complain about that its $400 where majority of yall said it would be a good price at. Some of yall to funny. Now i know a lot of yall seem to get your jollies off about specs so this is my take. 360 comes pretty much like a plain Jane except for the one fancy black colored elite with all the key parts sold separate like the wireless adapter which is like $50+ hd-drive $150+ and so forth. PS3 60gig came with the memory card reader built in, blu-ray yall love to hate built in, wifi built in, upgradable OS ability, bluetooth and Backwards Compatibility which some of yall drop a stinky loaf about all the time, and few other bells and whistles. The 80gig has some of this but its a few stripped out and the 40gig is the plain Jane version similar to the 360 but still with more stuff in it. I look at it like this the 360 is a fancy hub cap and the PS3 is them nice chrome rims. I said this this way just to get all of my beloved haters all built up and ready have a fit. Just so you know i got both systems im happy with the 360 to a point but my PS3 hasnt done me wrong at all and i will defend it on the strength that its games that look tough on it that im in love with currently.

Them revising the PS2 is a bit of a stretch but its still selling and selling well. I want to see what it looks like and how they managed to make it smaller.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing too.

299.11.2007 10:43

Yea, I really need this smaller model because they PS2 is portable with that built in screen, oh wait, I think thats what the PSP is for! I love the PS2 as a system but they don't need to go ahead and make a shelf system slimmer.

This answers everything.

I can see the PS2 going until the end of 2008. The system is cheap and has a lot of potential, maybe not for the graphical games like need for speed but they sure got good games like Buzz! and DDR and Ratchet and Clank. I personally don't like any system this generation, this generation is all about FPS games. What ever happened to the good times of Crash Bandicoot and Mario?
