PlayStation 3 firmware updates to 2.0

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 08 Nov 2007 6:31 User comments (12)

PlayStation 3 firmware updates to 2.0 Sony announced today that it had released v2.0 of its PlayStation 3 firmware which adds the feature "to remotely turn the console on and off through the remote play function."
That feature will give any PSP owner the access to content on their PS3 hard drive from anywhere. Users will also have the ability to create an unlimited amount of music and photo playlists. There could however be a catch. Many reports are saying that to use the feature, you will also be required to run the cooling fan constantly.

Another couple of more minor features are enhancements to the XMB interface which will allow for customization of the background and color.

Additionally, "a information board feature has been added that would keep users up to date on new PlayStation news, a new PlayStation Network category, and Trend Micro Web Security, which is provided free of charge until April of next year."

I think i will move on to PC gaming from this day forward. The whole reason all these systems are around and have so many games is because game makers didnt have to worry about what you had in your system to get the full effect of the game they made. cause if you had the system that they made the game for (lets say the nes) it was the same as all the other million systems that were in the homes of gamers. Now we're looking at a PS3 and a XBOX 360 that dont come with all you need to get the full effect of a game rite out of the box. You got to go and drop more cash for a HDD or a Firmwear update or any other crap that just makes it hard for the gamer who didnt pay his rent this month just to get the newest system to play that new systems games cause all he could afford was the core system with nothing to apply full power gaming. So now these "NEXT GEN" systems are nothin but over priced, usless except for playing games PC'S

Everyone knows about the 360's hardware issues but this makes me wonder if the ps3 will run hotter as they tweak certain features. The ps3 at this point in time is estimated to use only 30% of its total processing power, but what will happen when they try and incrementally jack it up to full power? The heat sinks won’t change and the cooling fan can only do so much, I just hope Sony planned for this eventuality better than MS did.

Yes, but having a PC that can play the games requires a fast CPU, a $200 video card, etc. mega $$. You'd spend the same amount or less in a Next Gen video console. I'd much rather keep the gaming where it belongs - video game consoles, and the computing where it belongs - PC's.

Do you not understand the concept of a firmware update? First off no one is charging you anything (with the exception of your internet connection, and XBOX Live for Xbox) This doesnt effect games or how they play at all, this adds extra features to the console that it doesnt currently have. How is that a bad thing? definitely not a reason to turn to PC's for gaming. As for "dropping more cash for a HDD" WTF are you on about ALL PS3's have a more than large enough HDD, it is totally optional to add a bigger HDD.

I guess you haven't seen the specs for Gear of War to run on a PC yet? More than half of the PC's out there right now can't run this game.PC gaming does the same things console do force you to upgrade somewhere down the road.

I would have to agree with that one. Being somewhat of a PC geek, knowing the amount of money to spend on a pc running 2gb or more processor speed with atleast 1gb of memory, a good dolby digital sound card, a good enough video card, and not to mention all the BS software you need to have everything run right on a Microsoft Pc (havent dealt much with a MAC) ur looking at a $1000. you can get one less than that but that would require cheap not-so reliable manufactured parts shipped from Timbuktwo.(spell check) Oh and thats not including a monitor. And the issues with a PC, if you do anything else, it would cause the pc to eventually run slow and cause the game play to lag over time even without being online. It continues to consistantly costs extra to just keep a pc maintained. There is no BASE price for a PC these days, When you can pay a set price for any console. Really it all plays out the same way. your gonna spend almost the same amount of money to add to the enjoyment no matter what device you are using. With a Pc, your really building your own PS3 over time with each hardware upgrade. But who is gonna take the time out to calculate the difference in cost of a PC purchase with all needed accessories and a console with all its needed acessories? I know I dont want to, becuase I have two pc's in my home to maintain and now Im trying to add everythign i can to the PS3 to make it appealing. I dont want to know how much im spending. Not being able to pay the rent because of it is money mis-managment and bad decisions. The way to fix it all is to be able to afford it. It wont seem like such a lose. But on the other hand, the PS3 might just start over heating. We will see how good these internal parts for the PS3 really is in the not so distant future. You shouldnt have to add accesories to keep your console maintained. then it will turn into a pc. I jsut want to pop a game in and play. Its a convenienve to those who like to watch movies jsut as much.

Basically somebody wants to make a device that can pretty much do everything for you...Play BD movies, HD games, Music, Photos, taking the trash out, doing our taxes. I feel sorry for what ever console to first make an exspansion slot to fit male parts in, That comes with its own lubricant. Good thing though, we wont need females anymore. lol

sorry for the long post. No offense to the women that does have something to offer other than physical. got a lil over exagerated but all in all you get the point.

shut up, you're retarded. In one sentence you're saying you don't want to know how much you're spending on pc and console parts. Then the next sentence you're talking about how "some people" mis-manage their finances. My guess is you're either about 17 years old, live at home, and spend all your job money on pc parts and games. Or else you've got more money than you know what to do with and don't need to manage your finances. I'm strongly leaning towards the former at this point, as your hormones are out of control.

Software aside, I don't care how much your spend on the console stuff, you'll always spend more on PC hardware. High-end graphics cards alone cost as much as these consoles do. But I agree with "comminup," a console has severely limited functionality.

$30 video card
$38 Intel Core 2 processor on new egg
$50 2 sticks of 1 GB RAM
$120 CRT monitor
$20 DVD-ROM
$30 sound card
$40 printer
$200 Windows XP(Direct from M$)
=====
$528 This is based on the lowest prices found of each item on New Egg.

Now you still need a cooling fan, mobo, hard drive, etc and you could have bought a baseline PS3(for $400, thats about $128 cheaper) which will play any PS3 game released in the future and your STILL spending money to build a bottom of the line PC. Will your PS3 play a game released in 3 years? Yes. Will your budget PC(assuming you continued to follow my trend of buying the cheapest parts available on newegg) play a game released in 3 years? It's possible but it will probably lag unless you choose the minimal performance standards of the game. Even then it is likley to lag.

As for heating concerns while yes hopefully Sony has considered this but if not atleast we have a $30 solution of an intercooler. Sure it doesnt account for Sony not planning ahead but does save you spending $400 on a new console just for proper cooling and such.

ok ive read all the comments.

how did all this go from being a firmware update to a discusion on computers? yes you do pay alot more to play games on your computer. a computer does alot more than play games. why turn on you computer to do a project, surf the web, ect. get bored and turn on you ps3 to play games. when you could just minimize what your doing and start the game right there and then. everything on a computer is optional. no one forces you all to buy the extra hardware or software. you chose to purchase them on your own. all i have to say in this is that no matter how you look at it. at the end you still spend the money. 700 dollars and you could build a decent comptuer that will play most of the games. if you want to see those perfect graphics then yea you will have to buy an expensive video card. oh by the way the ps3 games are expensive. 59.99 + tax.

now you decide. 299 for a ps3 play ps3 games listen to music watch dvds.

or 600 computer. copy or download music. everyone seems to be doing that lately. play games surf the web. do your homework. burn a cd download a movie burn a movie. damn you could pretty much do anything on a computer. ps3 is limited. you cant upgrade anything on it. you cant even open it or you void the warranty. you have to wait till they release another system.
