Dell headed into the mobile phone business?

Dell headed into the mobile phone business? According to a WSJ report, Dell may be preparing to move into the mobile phone business; as soon as next month.
The report says a group of engineers have been working on a phone based on the Android operating system for over a year now, and on a phone based on Windows Mobile for over six months.

Dell will be focusing on the increasingly crowded smartphone market, currently led by Apple, RIM and Palm and their two devices will likely be a touchscreen phone and one with a slide out QWERTY keyboard.

A Dell spokesperson added "We haven't committed to anything," and can still drop all plans for the phone.

Michael Dell, CEO of the company, has been rumored to be interested in creating smartphones since at least last year but so far nothing has come of the efforts.

An Android phone from Dell would be cool but I don't trust Dell's support: look what happened when they ventured into the MP3 market and the PDA market. They could not keep up and instead just gave up on the support for their devices altogether. I rather see this happening as well. Also, who will they partner with for their service plans? AT&T? Sprint? Verizon? Will it be CDMA supported? GSM? What would the cost be? There are too many factors as to why they will be a success or why they will bomb.

As long as there's no strain with the production of that I have seen with smartphones ( ie., no support w/flash, compatablity issues with programs, and these are just a few). Dell, you might want to hold your cards and lay them down when the time is right, just not right now, (recession reasons mainly) please.

Totally agree with you there mate but i have to add why does Dell have to venture into the mobile market when they are still struggling to make decent desktop computers and laptops. Try to master one product before getting into something else :P

Dell products and LG products are two of the labels that i personally will stay away from.

Whats wrong with their laptops? I'm using one...though too much thermal grease was used for my CPU and caused it to overheat. Alienware = Dell, and we all like alienware.
