Zune phone drivers hidden in new Zune software update Long Zheng at istartedsomething has made a very interesting find today, finding drivers for a Zune phone in the latest Zune software update, version 4.2.202.
[Microsoft.NTx86]
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBMS_COMP_MTPZ
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0710
%Zune.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_063E
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0640
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0641
%Phone.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZUSB, USBVID_045E&PID_0642
%ZuneIp.DeviceDesc% = ZuneMTPZIP, umburn:microsoft-com:device:mtpz:1

; Localizable strings
Msft = “Microsoft”
Zune.DeviceDesc = “Zune”

Phone.DeviceDesc = “Phone”

Zheng concludes that a Zune phone will indeed be launched, most likely at the Mobile World Congress next month.

I'm gonna make a driver for a 40-core 128-bit CPU and release it annonymously...

The point would be to start romors like, "AMD to release 40 Core processor, test driver leaked"

The alternative theory proposed by Paul Thurrott of "SuperSite for Windows" is that it's simply to allow the Zune PC software to work with Windows Mobile phones so they can have access to the Zune music library. I checked my wm6.5 touch pro phone and my device ID when running Generic RNDIS (active sync) is :

Using Internet Sharing: USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0303
Using Active Sync (advanced mode): USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0B15
Using Active Sync (basic mode): USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0A15
USB Storage Mode: USBSTOR\GenDisk

6.5 updates would need to bring a new sync layer or option which will present a new device ID for each phone, in the same way you can switch between active sync, internet sharing and work as a usb memory stick.

Windows mobile phone tend to run standard device id's so unless its a new driver layer for 6.5 which wold mean anyone below 6.5 is going to have to wait for the peps at xda devs to port the layer to lower devices or flash a 6.5 rom.

If its a new phone instead it wont be long before the layer is ported to all 6.5 phones, if ms release a wm6.5 phone that has features other 6.5 phones dont have it wont be very long before someone ports it to a cab intall and its good bye cab exclusivity.

If its wm7 it wont be long before thats cooked for other devices as well :)

But to be honest i think ms unless it pulls something really big out of the bag in the mobile market place they are lossing ground far to quickly to the iphone and android platforms.

What made wm phones so good in the past is the cooks and hackers who ported app from phone to phone, allowed for much later os builds to be installed on old and tired devices and much more... but microsofts lack of something new has caused so many developers to jump to another platform, ms needs to do something soon or its going to be game over for their mobile market sector.

HTC the largets wm phone manufacture, after years o creating their own apps which added value to the more basic looking ms interfaces. have even got board of waiting and is edging its bets by producing more and more android phones.

If microsoft wants to win:

1. they need a 1ghz driven cpu
2. fantastic battery life
3. integration to windows7 on a new level, eg:

It would be nice if i could simply use bluetooth/wifi/3g to connect back to my media center system and listen to stuff at home or on the road. Even re-integrate something like softsled, crossed with webguide4 and give me live tv support as well.

Infact softsled for desktop would be good you buncha make a demo and never release what would have been the best thing to happen to media center.

4. Bring it out soon.
5. give it multi touch
6. Sat Nav that does blow by blow and integrates into live maps

If only the last 3 points, it would at least now compete with the android and iphone platforms.

I know there are many solar Bluetooth devices out there now that can charge with solar, it would be great if we saw a solar and/or splashpad (dc inductive resonant charging) ready functionality built into as well.

Hell if it came sold with a splashpad doc ;) its going to be really hot.

If they think that because apple turned a ipod into a phone it means that touting a device or wm7 as a music platform is going to make it sell it isnt, people have lost faith we need to see someone big and bold carrot to draw us back.

Just my thoughts.
