Sony introduces white PS3 and bigger HDD model

Sony introduces white PS3 and bigger HDD model Sony Japan has announced the launch of a white slim PlayStation 3 model for the nation, dubbed the "Classic White" colorway.
The console will have a 160GB HDD, but Sony has promised larger capacity models for the future.

"Charcoal Black" was the current only colorway available for the slimmer models. Sony had offered a "Ceramic White" version of the "fat" PS3 in 2008.

Furthermore, Sony has launched a 320GB capacity slim PS3, but only in black.

Additionally, starting tomorrow, the 120GB model will move to "open price," meaning retailers can price it at whatever they want.

The new consoles go on sale on July 29th, priced at the equivalent of $340 for the smaller HDD model and $400 for the larger capacity model.

I'm just trying to figure out. Why even offer a white version?

Everything is kewl about this article minus this aspect of the free pricing of the 120gig model.

and to comment about the white factor is this cause Nintendo went black.

Have we not learned anything from the great late Michael Jackson

"It doesn't matter if your Black or White" :)

So you have a better 'base' to paint it however else you might like? ;-)

I think it looks pretty cool,,,

Yes, but Sony hasn't...BTW, in case anyone from Sony is reading this, the lesson is that going from black to white makes you look like a freak.

These prices seem rather high, and once again, sony is putting a tiny hard drive into the PS3, and calling it big. You can get 500GB drives for real cheap right now, even 1TB laptop drives are not that expensive anymore. It seems like sony should bring back the 4 USB ports for the high-end units; otherwise you are just paying $50-$100 more for a hard drive that is worth $3 more. At least the extra USB ports would let you connect more external drives.

You're telling me that you can use up 120GB of HDD space in under 6 months? That's a possibility with PSN+, but for normal users, 120GB is a lot for PS3, considering that you can't save games to an external hard drive and load them from the hard drive (unless you copy the data every time you start a game, which is pointless).

And IF users were planning to get PSN+, they'd either buy the 250GB model or you said, cheaply buy a 500GB hard drive on the internet.
At least it's possible to upgrade the hard drive without needing to spent a lot.
$340/$400 (£225/£265) is relatively cheap for a Playstation and a Blu-Ray player.

there's dirty, then there's DIRTY.

Open pricing, how much people pay will determine the average price. Which company will be the low price leader.

I can see why the Wii went black but no reason anyone would buy white. There a lot of white TVs out there or something?

So they're now moving to 160gb & 320gb hard drives
and raising the price?!

I see this is Japan for now but they surely can't expect that to help sales anywhere else, can they?

I thought the point of PS3's way of doing things was you put your own hard drive in and couldn't care less what it comes with
(in fact besides the cheapest smallest one for the real technophobes why do they even bother?).

Mind you, once you get to 250gb does it really matter in a console anyway?

Yeah errr...spose I'll leave it to the moderators whether it is cool to do it here or you could PM me but you hear of any steals on open price PS3s I'd love to hear about it. Picked up a great deal on an xbox 360 arcade with 2 games for $80 after a $50 gift card at Target after they released the new xbox...

This is in Japan the Fat PS3's came in about 5 different colours there.

So they will have black and white, and maybe a third.

The Open Pricing seems interesting I wonder if that'll come to Australia, could be interesting, as most shops psuh the PS3 now and don't worry about the XBox 360.

Not even the new slim version has changed that much.

I guess the sale return is much better on the PS3 than the 360.

Hmmm,

Perhaps the release of new models is why Sony in Australia currently has a widely advertised promotion including a free 120G PS3 with many of their televisions!
Wonder if they have heaps of the current models sitting in storage?

I have used more than that in a week; my MP3 collection alone is over 200GB. Plus there are all the games, videos, and game saves (some games like bioshock use several GB just for game saves...and it is a PITA to remove them all, one-by-one). My system is always within about 10GB of maximum capacity...when I get a new game, I have to remove something old.

It's just in the japanese market isn't it? I know with the PS2 they did the same thing, multi-colors. Nintendo's also been doing the multi-color thing in japan since the N64.
