SynthFont is a midi editing and playback tool using various sound source files like SoundFonts, GigaSampler files, SFZ files and more.
VST instruments could also be used instead of a sound source file to play back the notes inside a MIDI file. A MIDI does not contain digital audio data like an MP3 file, but instead contains notes and instructions on how to play the audio, and its up to the software you are using to render it.
