PrimoPDF is a free PDF creator that can convert PDF-files from virtually any application. This software doesn't include any pop-up ads, no registration requirement or any other annoying things. PromoPDF is easy to use the output quality is good.

I used a word document of my CV (Resume) to test this little gem. PrimoPDF is installed as a printer, so it's just a case of 'File/Print' and selecting the PrimoPDF device as the printer. In the case of my CV, it took just a couple of seconds to convert.
The security is easy to set as well. I just set a password that stopped the text from being modified. That said, there are some tools available that can crack Passworded PDFs, but that's a limitation of the PDF format and not of this very excellent utility.
