Nokia hopes multitasking and customization will set Symbian^3 apart Earlier this week David Rivas, VP of Technology Management at Nokia, showed off a demo of the interface for the Symbian^3 (S^3) smartphone OS at a demo in San Francisco. The first Nokia phones running the now completely open source platform will be available later this year.
During the presentation, which primarily demonstrated customizing the interface, Rivas talked about the features that will set it apart in the smartphone market. Of particular note were his comments about multitasking.

He pointed out that Nokia has had multitasking on their smartphones for several years, and indicated it will be "coming much more front and center."

You can see the demo in this video posted by PhoneDog.com's Noah Kravitz.

Symbian...
Is Android possible on Nokia?

I like how it show what applications are running and you can easily close ones you're not using. That is something lacking on my wife's new Samsung "Moment" with Android. I'm sure there are 3rd party task management apps, but it is something that should be more "front and center" as he says.
I also like the ability to add as many home screens as you want. Again, I'm not sure if this is possible on the Android without 3rd party apps or hacks.
Other than that, nothing seems very innovative here.

^^ yeah, its just like windows or linux like, but lot more better than windows mobile os.

We can choose and switch which applications, which we need,
we can run whatever applications we need in background, lyk i used to use symtorrent for my nokia and let it run in background the whole time while I hv access to wifi. same time listening songs, browing etc etc etc,
i love that feature. :D

The Symbian os looks nice but its not better than Android and Symbian is owned by Nokia which is another downer. Support American products and stay away from Nokia.

i think i could arrange symbian the same ceremony IE6 had

Its only a matter of time until we see the symbian platform go away

^^I highly doubt that. Apple and Nokia are successful companies and invest millions of dollars in their R&D,I doubt either one are just gonna drop everything about their own OS and switch to Android or something else...
And with Symbian made available as Open Source, I doubt it will just fade away...

where did you see a remark about another OS which is presumably better no matter what?

i think you should take heed to the 2nd tranlsation the urban dictionary has to offer for fanboy

For me its not like, symbian, iphone os, android or anything like that,
All it matters are the features and reliability.

I have used iphone, n ipod touch for a long time, i still use touch though. And i hv tried n95 8gb from nokia n some other phones also. The thing is all of them are having lots of good parts and bad parts.

like n95's multi tasking and ability to close or open and run in background, whatever applications we need. the availability of applications. Even quality free apps, since it is open source.

Apple's UI, quality, and "reliability to some extend" (I hv reasons for this some extend). And btw surfing internet is uncomparable in iphone.

Personally, the only one that seems to have any real future is Android...and that is only because I think it will eventually get taken over by the user community, and turned into something that has a lot more of the linux capabilities that we all hopes for when we first heard that they were developing a mobile OS based on linux.

What brand are you suggesting we support? Apple? Everything is made somewhere else anyway. The silicon is refined in the good 'ol US of A on any device.

You guys do know that not everything revolves around US, right? There are markets, people creating/consuming stuff on other markets/continents other than North America.
