MPAA CEO makes statement on anti-SOPA blackout

MPAA CEO makes statement on anti-SOPA blackout As you've undoubtedly noticed, today was the anti-SOPA blackout for hundreds of major sites in the U.S., most notably Wikipedia, which remains dark in silent protest.
AfterDawn is also using Google's blackout landing page.

Today, former Senator and current MPAA CEO Chris Dodd had his say on the blackout:

Only days after the White House and chief sponsors of the legislation responded to the major concern expressed by opponents and then called for all parties to work cooperatively together, some technology business interests are resorting to stunts that punish their users or turn them into their corporate pawns, rather than coming to the table to find solutions to a problem that all now seem to agree is very real and damaging.

It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information and use their services. It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today. It?s a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests.

A so-called "blackout" is yet another gimmick, albeit a dangerous one, designed to punish elected and administration officials who are working diligently to protect American jobs from foreign criminals. It is our hope that the White House and the Congress will call on those who intend to stage this "blackout" to stop the hyperbole and PR stunts and engage in meaningful efforts to combat piracy.

Please, everyone, if you have not already, sign the petition and keep the Internet free of censorship in America: https://www.google.com/landing/takeaction/

"...some technology business interests are resorting to stunts that punish their users or turn them into their corporate pawns..."

So never mind that I can read for myself, right Mr. Dodd? My opposition to SOPA/PIPA has to be my being turned into a corporate pawn because I don't or can't think on my own, right? /end rant

I'll take a gimmicky protest that sides with free expression and free flow of information than one that automatically assumes you are in the wrong and censors you on behalf of the powers that be.

Look's like former Senator and current MPAA CEO Chris Dodd is a bad actor. He dosn't have to keep proving it. What is the link between motion pictures and the US goverment?. How many prople can you think of that were actor's before they were involved in politics or vice versa

Piracy is never going to end unless how the delivery of the “intellectual media” being currently delivered is changed.

Tech Uses
Develop a Mp3/Mp4 player that is unable to connect with other Operating Systems that utilizes 3g/4g/LTE limited internet connectivity to the “Centralized Marketplace” and their Digital Storage Center. Utilizing a newly Developed proprietary Codec. And Universal Media Playback Software For the Licensed Custom Codecs.

Using the same new operating system for Media Playback using a Digital Video Recorder(DVR) with the Operating System Installed and the new Codec the movies are played in. The Customer can either purchase or Rent Movies on a new “Centralized Marketplace” By using the Ethernet Connection on the back of the receiver. Your Purchases are stored in “Cloud like” Digital locker that you are given access to download them locally to your device. The rentals are removed after your rental period is over and are unable to be downloaded locally to you device.

Backbone:
New Operating System With a custom Codec for playback of Digital Media, that is not compatible with other operating systems (i.e. .dmg for mac / .exe for Windows) moving away form a universal format ( .Mp3/.Mp4)

Practical Use:
The idea is to be able to stream your media to the new Media device with 3g connectivity. The Customer has access to that storage space by logging in to their account on the device and a folder with the Media you have purchased using the provided “Centralized Marketplace¹” is available to you to download to the local device.

Pros:
No Discs,
No Need for Hard Copies
No software to convert a format that is proprietary
Inability to transfer or share media on these devices.
Uses a x number of volt power adapter to charge the device (Non Usb)

Cons

Jobs Could be lost such as Music stores such as Bull Moose Music/Movie rental stores such as Blockbuster would become Obsolete. Unless the changed with the times and followed in line. Movie Theaters would be also counter intuitive to stopping piracy.

Speaking of "irresponsible" and a "disservice," Dodd has been doing more for the lobbyists/businesses who pay him to do their bidding than for the actual constituents he represents for YEARS, so not really a respectable person to give much credence to many his opinions.

the only disservice here is the one the politicians are doing us.

Dear Chris Dodd

you only think the blackout of sites is a gimmick
because you are afraid that is will knock your SOPA bill
out. so there is nothing more that you can say about it.

the only thing i wish is that alot of the big sites, YAHOO, GOOGLE,MSN, and Facebook would really go dark for 24 hours.
then you will see what the power of the Big Companies will do
to your SOPA.

To the idiot politicians in Washington. do you honestly
believe that SOPA, will stop people from downloading movies, software, and music. well you are out of touch with reality
you people cant even stop people from hacking into the goverment
computer systems, even with the newest technology. there will always be away around anything you think you can do to stop, the downloading. there is always someone who will reverse what ever
you put out there to block sites

1219.1.2012 10:51

I say free America now vote out all the sitting politicians! When I signed an online petition my state senator sent me a form letter, telling me how he was doing the right thing.keeping the pirates from stealing the hard earned money from theactors, writers, etc. Well look at the golden globes or the oscars they look like they are really hurting. Then look at New Orleans who needs the help here!

1319.1.2012 11:33

What an insight-lacking jagoff! How arrogant can one person be to point the finger at anyone else?

Does he not see that legislation to shut down any and all that even 'reference' to copyrighted work would essentially close out 70 percent of the internet????

Of all people in this world that can't even fathom the notion of "utilitarianism" and look to benefit the the 'greater good' or the larger piece of the pie, this guy has proven himself as the cake-taker and would benefit this world MORE by being assassinated.

Hopefully someone will take him out along with all others putting themselves first and the community last.

And the perpetuation of ignorance still runs amok. Historically speaking, no president ever gets the credit/damnation they deserve. Everything always seems to happen in the reverse purview of public sense.

Equally, every time a public system is put into place, it begins to take hold & START WORKING, funding gets yanked & the system falls to shite. Public outcry flares up & then they want to blame the president for a crap plan. When in fact it was going to work, it was working, it simply needed MORE TIME.

But that's the problem with human nature. Baby wants it NOW! Baby can't have it now, baby want's to know WHY!

So, when does someone want to step up & be the adult/grown-up about all this? It certainly isn't the people writing the laws for this crap. The babies for this shite? Their bottle happens to be their wallets. So when do we start to be adults & show some tough love here?

It's not just a one-man game keeptherupublic, despite your name calling or politics. Rambo makes a great rally call & a great movie, but in reality he makes a target & another flag draped coffin ride home.

There is no need to be name calling. Its just a discussion. I can see both of your points. But please leave out the name calling, and have an adult conversation. --- On another note. I do not support any of our politicians, they are nothing but lying, deceiving, money hungry fools who only care about themselves. ---- PS : I don't care about the name calling towards our government, just here on the forums.

Seems he doesn't have to worry about a GOP opponent since they are too busy cutting each others throats.
Mitt Romney? Please...

Ron Paul for president. While the GOP blows him off, he tells it like it is. He stands for something called a free America. Do you really know what freedom means?

Basically from what I read of MPAA response is:

"How dare they make the public aware of the facts that were well hidden in our proposed legislation(s), rather than joining us in revising the facts to help suit everyone needs but the consumers."

After purchased we customers should legally be able to transfer whatever type of media to any device we choose regardless of platform we own without fearing a five year jail sentence. DRM and other types of copy protection should be eliminated to insure this is possible.

I know, a pipe-dream with corporations running the show. They don't realize or don't care that their business models dating back ~75 years no longer work in today's digital world. Still the curmudgeons insist on old school practices with band aids that really just alienates customers and promotes piracy.

Special codecs is just another losing battle. They will be hacked by a 12 year old kid with skills.

Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot.

I still would like the option of owning a optical disk, not streaming BS À la carte especially with music where I prefer to own a whole album not just parts of it for $1.99 a cut.

Now why throw 'Democrat' like a kitten out into a busy highway? Did you think you were going to get some bigdick points or something?

No, democrats aren't kittens & republicans aren't heroes of might & magic either so stop the tin foil bravado. Besides, the douchebag's out of office, which for all intents & purposes negates any political affiliation he has. Other than to whom he may be paying off via the alphabet Nazis.

Offer us a bite of the sandwich man, not the wrapper it came in.

Ronald Reagan
B actor and D president. Conservatives and bible belt folks give him credit for ending the cold war when the whole time he was reading a teleprompter.
It was his staff that did all the work and do not get the credit they deserve.

Jeff
and what to you have to say about obama you idiot? look up how many jobs Reagan created and how many has obummer created.
As an outsider to the US I think he's done pretty good overall, brought in the health scheme, I find it really odd that people are really against it, but jobs are hard to be made all over the world, companies are looking for the cheapest ways and would rather down size than keep people.

Though getting back on topic, having people steal/copy/pirate stuff for free, or even selling stuff at $2 a pop.

Isn't going to keep a whole heap of people employed or even have the turn out needed to keep making new jobs.

The funny thing is with so few US people wanting or even bothered to vote you'll always have dodgy people simply doing what ever they like because no ones really cares about who's is running your country.

I think the stats are only 1% of the US pop actually vote, so there's really only 100,000 or so people you really need to fuss about the rest just follow along with the voting people.

The 2 go hand in hand, it's no good saying I don't like SOPA PIPA etc if they can't be bothered to vote for who ever doesn't want those policies brought in.

I've said before some overseas news sites are making fun of the whole blackout thing because they honestly don't care about the whole SOPA or PIPA thing.

But the content industry does need something to happening I guess to just keep some money flowing in.

I was reading up that the whole porn industry is close to going under because they can't afford to keep making new movies and many companies have shut down or dropped 90% of the staff at some companies.

They say it's because of the tube sites as the tube sites don't give the content producers any money at all rather than problems from torrent sites as many people can't get their head around them so they aren't much of a problem like a tube site is.

After all you need some money turn over nothing will happen and then places shut down big time.

If people don't want SOPA or PIPA what do people suggest the industry should do, I personally don't like digital copies of stuff so if everything goes to digital copy only then I'd hardly buy anything even if I really want it.

That device is pointless as people will just hack into it and you end up with just another hacked device that plays everything and no one paying for anything.

I notice Afterdawn is now after ADs as I guess that's for the server costs etc it's just another example. and if this site doesn't have money coming in will it exist in a year or two as well?

Just to beat a dead horse... SOPA/PIPA is basically a bill of goods being sold as one thing, when (after you have read the ingredients) contains a lot more rat's tails & lizard's balls than you expected in the recipe.

It would be great if the idiots selling the thing were upfront about what they were doing, but they never are. And because we know about their past behavior we scramble to make sure what they say is true (fact check) & sure enough, everything is tipped way out of proportion in the wrong guys benefit.

The reason more countries 'should' be interested in what we US judicial trend setting morons are up to is because of the crap like the what happened to the kid in the UK (extradition) in the now global conditions of entertainment & the far reaching claws that these companies now have. It's no longer just confined to one countries borders any more. And that's what makes it scary.

Very well said,

I know as a Canadian I am very concerned for this bill passing through as it will dictate how our own Bill C-11/32 will pass when it goes through our Parliament. Basically as the bill exists now in Canada they are pretty much on par with PIPA, and although they said no to extraditing Canadians to the US over copyright infringement or piracy, they do have laws in there that would be over the extreme precedent if those conditions were met. Not only that, but the means to which they would monitor our consumers internet would not be cost effective for Canadian ISPs who are fighting those bills along with also being against SOPA/PIPA, as it's just unrealistic for any form of government from any country to sincerely believe you can "Catch Them All" like pirates are Pokemon, let alone believe that our ISPs should be the one responsible for policing our internet.

Add that to take taking down of foreign sites, I dunno how US considers THAT good for US business, as how much business is done through imports/exports alone through US? Taking down the e-commerce side all to support Hollywood fascists, is not only ignorant, but a down slope $ loss on US bottom line.

Should piracy be stopped? No. Cause it will never be, there will always be a way, and you can't arrest/jail us all. Or even make us pay through the courts.

Should we find means to slow it down? Definitely, but make sure it's a cost effective measure that all parties can agree on and take share on. Throwing it down to ISPs only and individual sites to monitor is not the way to go.

with the exception of slightly different patterns they are almost identical so stop using that lame reason to hate the decisions others are making for us. Remember.....the U.S. is not as much a "republic" as it is a "democracy" because the "supreme power does not actually rest in the body of the citizens".........we simply vote and hope for the best.

Having two parties (and inevitably the close-minded people that come along with them and only vote one way regardless) is humanity's need for CHOICE.....nothing more and nothing less.

If you really want to show intelligent decision making in politics......vote for the one that best suits this country based on the facts and not whether they are "Democrat" or "Republican". Remember......the "Democratic" party came first.

They are actually not the same. Go take a general political science course in college and then get back to me.

First Dodd screwed the housing market in America with Barney Franks and now hes in charge of the MPAA.

Pretty Ironic that a former Democrat that is for the common blue collar American is now in charge of the Trillion dollar MPAA.
What a true democrat.

Lincoln was a Republican. I guess you forgot to post that in your nonstop rambling.
In those days republicans were what democrats are today for the most part, Dims/Reapers became what they are now during the 30s I believe.

Truth hurts. He screwed America before and trying again. Yes he's a Democrat. No need to cry about it. Not all Democrats are saints. Obviously with your Kitten throwing comparison you aren't either.

Remember...Lincoln was a Republican.
While you're accurate in that Lincoln was Republican...you should have added he was the FIRST Republican and Jackson was the FIRST Democrat (Jackson was first)........however, I've taken more courses than needed. Probably older and wiser than you but just speculating on that. THEY ARE THE SAME......each party was NOT founded on specifically 'different' views to be held forever. In other words Dems didn't form and say "we're going to always mandate government intervention and sacrifice jobs" and Repubs didn't form and say "we're always going to mandate warmongering and always create jobs and keep gov't intervention out". Not how it works. Two parties are were created out of separate INITIAL though and a need for choice. There have been great Dems and Repubs. and you "hating Dems" just because they are Dems is a clear indication of limited thought.

Enough! YOu're clueless and just because you took one measley PS class in community college doesn't mean your narrow-mindedness is accurate. You clearly don't deviate from the absolute black and white that PS classes instruct. They also teach you to find the grey areas and keep an open mind and think freely and clearly by "interpreting" the politics.

Sheesh........sheeple! Please don't vote! You're a danger!

That's EXACTLY what I'm talking about!!! 'You' finally made some 'sense'. No, "truth" being the problem because of the democrats being in office is an invalid argument. That's a childish means of getting attention, thus the kitten/highway analogy I proposed. Several people would say bring, "your us up to your level" when it's clearly a waste of time & for most republican/biblically it's been stated, "speak to your audience".

Am I crying about the fact Dodd is a demo, hell no. Of course you can't tell that by the tenor of my comment, but catch phrases like 'douche bag, Nazi, & pay offs' should have been a hint. So when you ask folks to take college courses, it tends to scare me further.

So, no, this guy isn't a saint. Unless you want me to come up with a waste more humor on a polar opposite for a saint in the legion of hell? But if you have even remotely come across my stuff in the past, there is no doubt in anyone's mind I am tarnished. I don't even try to hide it. That's where honor lies.

And for your information, the rolls were reversed between the Repubs/Demos when Lincoln was in office. Rebups had a more liberal stance while the Demos had a more conservative stance. And unlike SOPA/PIPA they were more interested in handing out a few more freedoms than taking them away.

Although the debate may take on another flavor for the southern states & the textile industry, but as was told to me:

Can we stop arguing above and celebrate that we at least have a temporary stop to both PIPA and SOPA. It's amazing how passionate everyone gets, but lets be satisfied that not only the American voices were heard this day, but also the voices around the globe.

4220.1.2012 15:36

Got my vote...

4320.1.2012 15:36

Hi everyone!

A big hurrah to you!!!!! We’ve won for now -- SOPA and PIPA were dropped by Congress today -- the votes we’ve been scrambling to mobilize against have been cancelled.

The largest online protest in history has fundamentally changed the game. You were heard.

On January 18th, 13 million of us took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion, people all around the world saw what we did on Wednesday. See the amazing numbers here and tell everyone what you did.

This was unprecedented. Your activism may have changed the way people fight for the public interest and basic rights forever.

The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled. “‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’”

“'This is altogether a new effect,' Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing 'an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically' in the last four decades, he added."

Don't let politicians ROB Americans of the RIGHT to safe, affordable prescription drugs! Tell them to vote "no" on SOPA!

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is supposed to fight counterfeiters and protect U.S. businesses. But what the politicians aren't telling you is that it will hurt average citizens in the process.SOPA's broad language groups real pharmacies—licensed, legitimate pharmacies that require a doctor's prescription and sell brand-name medications—with the rogues who sell everything from diluted or counterfeit medicine to narcotics without a prescription. Because of this, the bill would cut off online access to the legitimate Canadian and other international pharmacies that hundreds of thousands of Americans rely on each year to access their needed medicines at an affordable price.

Does anybody read full threads?

As I posted, I received email from Tiffiniy Cheng today stating SOPA and PIPA both were were dropped from Congress.

I'm sure the MPAA and RIAA will be sneaky trying to do the same in a slightly different form.

SOPA’s co-sponsors began to withdraw that day. By Thursday night, the GOP candidates for president were trying to outdo each other in anti-SOPA statements. Senate Republicans, also sensing a political opportunity, tried to hang the PIPA bill (SOPA’s sister in the Senate) around the Democrats’ necks. Finally, on Friday, SOPA and PIPA were withdrawn. Given a tight congressional timetable, and the toxic nature of these bills, it’s unlikely we’ll see them again.
