Music industry to file lawsuits against individual P2P users

Written by Lasse Penttinen @ 26 Jun 2003 12:26 User comments (30)

The RIAA is look to file hundreds of lawsuits against individuals within the next 8-10 weeks. Their announcement has already had an impact on P2P network usage, but representatives of P2P application providers believe that the decrease will be temporary. The RIAA executive threatens that tens of millions of P2P users are taking the "real risk of facing the music".
The Recording Industry Association of America, citing significant sales declines, said it would begin searching Internet file-sharing networks Thursday to identify music fans who offer "substantial" collections of MP3 song files for downloading. It urged users to remove popular music-sharing software or adjust program settings to prevent such downloads.

does anyone use blocking progs like peerguardian?

226.6.2003 12:38

Correct me if i'm wrong. It is illegal to Serve or Share Music file from your Computer, but it's not illegal to download them. Is this statement correct if not please correct me?? Sorry for the repost but I thought this might be the apropriate place for this question.

326.6.2003 13:02

Labrat: Hard to say whether it is exactly legal in the States -- I doubt it, but in various European countries downloading illegal material and using it for your personal use (and not distributing it further) is perfectly legal (two that I can name immediately are Finland and Sweden).

426.6.2003 13:20

In the states it is illegal to be in possesion of copyrighted material that you did not pay for. (bootlegged material such as what you download) Even when you buy a music cd you do not own the music you only own the media that the music is on.

526.6.2003 13:51

What's the big deal with sharing music, it justs happens on-line, people are just mad cause they don't get their share of the benjamines, and I don't see people getting mad about downloading books on-line isn't that the same thing?

Hehehh.... I think it is funny that the RIAA thinks that their loss of money is because of file sharing online. If they took a strong listen to the crap they are producing these days I think it would be evident why they are losing money. Just my 2 cents. Later.

726.6.2003 19:48

i share over 400mp3s and im not scared at all. What are they going to do kick my door in for some music. Im not selling or reproduceing the music in anyway. We've been copying vhs tapes with two vcrs for years. Whats the difference here? Like they don't make enough money anyway. So they lost a million or two I'm sure the profits they made this year are still substantial. It all comes down to greed. If u don't want people to share something don't produce it in the first place.

826.6.2003 19:53

F**K the RIAA and the MPAA.

926.6.2003 19:59

just a piece of advice. If you don't want anyone who shouldn't have your ip get your ip then start using progs like this http://www.simplyclick.org/uploadertest/pg2.asp what this does is block ip ranges from known RIAA and MPAA and other greedy bastards.

1027.6.2003 01:07

i really dont get what is going on...is Kazaa getting sued? i heard they were trying to sue a whole bunch of people.

1127.6.2003 01:17

niss: Yes.

I hope the RIAA & MPAA read this: I am boycotting all media related to your industries, I am also convincing others to join in on my boycott. You will never recieve another penny from me and I hope all business' that you are affiliated with go straight to hell. Looks like its divx & mp3's 4 me.

1327.6.2003 06:13

Rogue4ces: I totally agree with you. shutter93: count me in...

1427.6.2003 15:00

Artists get virtually nothing from album sales....thay make all their money off merchandising and concerts. It's the RIAA that makes all the money...this is all about them, not the artists

im down for the boycott. I'll talk to all of my friends about it too. I've also sent an email to the RIAA address for reporting piracy stateing my own personal opinions of their lawsuits, and greedy ways.

1929.6.2003 06:25

Maybe we should set up a website (or maybe afterdawn could) to allow people to sign up for the boycott. That way we could do some research and list the products to stay away from.

I was surfing and found a website check it out: http://www.boycott-riaa.com/

I hate the riaa and mpaa. I always did and i always will. What are they going to do shut down kazaa and then another new one will open. So its not like file sharing is going goodbye.

Hey sonoma095! If you own a DVD player as well then try wiring your system as the following: DVD player into VCR1, VCR1 into VCR2, and VCR2 into TV. I do this and as long as you have VCR1 on and use VCR2 to record, then you can tape DVDs! I have tried this technique with different brands of VCRs as I own three of them since they are so cheap now adays and the trick works wonders. I guess since DVDs can be recorded using VCRs then the RIAA has something else to look at as well. Personally I have not purchased a PC game or CD since I discovered P2P networks, and I do not plan on making a purchase in the future as long as the RIAA continues with this nonsense. NOTE: I was still buying games, movies, and music when I first used P2P networks, but that ended with the RIAA giving everyone a hard time. RIAA bring it on!!!

With all the fines that the RIAA is proposing lately, their definetly not making any friends. If they want to cut down on p2p music sharing, threats aren't gonna cut it. This article has some interesting opinions on the matter: http://www.random-accuracy.com/archives/music/bk-022003.html

2413.7.2003 17:18

What's the difference in taking a CD and putting the songs on your hard drive and getting them from Kazaa, etc.? Anybody have a nice answer to this one? Thanks.

Does anyone know of any organizations that we can report these companies to? I would think that breaking into peoples computers would be considered illegal. I am tired of getting tagged by the IRMA, MPAA, RIAA, Korea, and China. Let alone all the other ip ranges tagging me. Oh yeah, does anybody know why China and Korea keep tagging my pc?

In recent news kazaa use drops severly day after RIAA warnings...seems to me that the riaa's winning the battle, here’s a link on an article published by the channel 2 news.. http://search.ktvu.com/fran/query.html?ran=&qcat=web&qkw=&pgtarg=wbsdogpile&mkt=&heading=&col=cox&qc=cox&ht=0&lk=1&st=1&pw=100%25&ws=0&nh=10&la=&rf=0&qp=url%3Aktvu.com&qt=kazaa&x=17&y=8

carlitob -- it might also be worth noteing that when you purchase cdr's and recordable media , the RIAA gets a cut of the action shutter93 -- http://www.boycott-riaa.com is an excellent info site -- I encourage everyone here who shares their distaste for the RIAA to visit The RIAA has been at this for years -- I don't recall the exact case or specifics -- but sometime in the early 80's when vcr's first started poppin up there was a case where a person was sued for recording tv shows or something along that nature -- the complaint was copyright infringement -- if memoery serves the defandent won because it was not actual copyright infringement based on the way the law is written -- However the RIAA is trying to get that law revised, they have already made attempts at it -- Knowledge IS Power -- we need to become informed or the RIAA is going to get its way.
