Xbox 360 Elite HDMI output details revealed

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 02 Apr 2007 8:13 User comments (44)

Xbox 360 Elite HDMI output details revealed it has been revealed that the Xbox 360 Elite will not output multi-channel PCM audio over HDMI which is no different than what occurs in Core and Premium systems.
The Elite will support the HDMI 1.2 specification. When connected to an HDTV set with HDMI input, the Xbox 360 will automatically select the appropriate video output resolution up to 1080p. Users will not be able to manually force resolutions however.

The HDMI audio output will still not be fully functional as many users hoped. The Elite will not output uncompressed multi-channel audio. HD-DVD users should look elsewhere if they hope to enjoy the lossless HD-DVD audio formats.

“If you are keen on having 5.1 PCM output, I recommend purchasing the Toshiba A2 player which after the price drop, will be much cheaper than Elite" was one such resonse to the audio functionallity of the Elite.

All Dolby Digital Plus and TrueHD audio tracks will continue to be down mixed and the output would be no different than the Xbox 360 Core or Premium systems.

Nevertheless, the Xbox 360 Elite can output 2-channel PCM audio over HDMI. “The goal was to provide a digital connection for video which people wanted for some of their TVs. And of course, single cable A/V connection. So if having analog video bothered you before, you can now use digital. If you lacked component/VGA on your TV, you are in business with Xbox 360 Elite.”

There will be a spring HD-DVD software update that should introduce DTS audio output capabilities to existing Xbox 360 Core and Premium systems.

Agreed.

IMO worst decision by Microsoft (regarding X360 & HD DVD) so far.
And the first time I have the feeling meaby Sony and PS3 isn't so bad.

if your tv did not have component/VGA, what are the chances its going to have HDMI input??
Anyway, I agree with everyone else. I was hoping to buy one of these to replace my broken 360 that went out of warranty. But the only thing i really wanted was the HDMI output. then they just cripple the one thing they got going with this version? That was just enough for me to change my mind. That PS3 is looking better and better...

I can't see why everyone is all up in arms. Just look at it this way. Your getting a larger Harddrive & HDMI for $80 if your planning to buy a new system.

For people who already have a 360's and are looking to buy the larger Harddrive, see if your local gaming store will take your old console back for a trade-in,make sure you get top dollar for it. GameCrazy in my town will buy your 360 for $230, now that leaves you with a $279 balance if your gonna trade. Since you want tle larger harddrive, you would had have to dish out a 179 for 120gigs if you kept your old console.. I hope you all are folling me with this so far. You would get a Elite for $70.00.

And that how I see it. New owners will makeout good. There getting HDMI (That I realy don't care about) and a larger harddrive for $79.00.
Fuzzy Math I know.

The problem is MS has been putting off this fix for awhile and we get this and its more like a bandaid than a real "fix"

Im following here, but now..instead of the elite for an extra 70-80$ add in another 20$ and u get a base PS3 with a blu ray player ..20$ for a blu ray player that gives tru HD sounds sweet to me.

If only MS would just cough out the HD DVD in wit the elite at this price then the elite would seem far more attractive.

meh with no wifi or FLashcard reader whats the point?
Would rather wait till the new premiums come out and tag it for 399 and use the extra money for games and stuff the PS3 just aint ripe yet.

This article just justified all of my other posts about the 360. M$ does it again enough said and I agree with most of the post so I won't stress the point any further. But to correct the guy that said you are only paying $80 for the HDMI and bigger HD, to be honest your wrong your paying $480+ for those. Then on top your paying $960 if you already bought the Premium version and didn't not trade it and if your did trade it you pay more and lost more depending on what your trade is worth.

I can't see why M$ would make something like this NOW. Everybody who wanted an Xbox by now already has one. This also makes it unfair to those who baought a 360 in the past and may have wanted 120GB or maybe just for the colour. If I had a say in this, I would have lost the premium package altogether in the first place, and release this instead. Then yor choice would be either a plain white system with 20GB, or a black accessorized system for a higher cost and 120GB.

I see a few reasons for it,

1.MS sees people willing to throw moeny away(between the PS3 and rebuying 360s it seems so)

2.People have been screaming for MS to bring out a larger HDD

3.People have been screaming for MS to fix the 360

4.HDMI is a worth while addition..well real HDMI

All in all its a limited release to gain money from the dumb and fanboys, how ever if they put the 65NM CPU in it I would be willing to bend over >>

For Audiophiles and HDMI semi-purest, The ONKYO TX-SR804 will take the componenet leads of the 360 and upconvert it to HDMI, give you 6.1 Surround sound, plus upconvert your vcr, dvd, ps2,and original xbox to HDMI All in stereo at least and only 1 cable to your tv.(and a slight dent in your checkbook) but if you are going the surround sound way this is 1 excellent combination. (I like it anyways).

can it convert analog or composite to HDMI?
whats its input capacity?
if it can handle most current types and ups it to full HDMI the it would be worth while for any Hdef fan.

Actually I was just letting readers know the way I hooked up my 360 to HDMI input. The people at ONKYO and thier website should be able to give you the answers you desire..check it out, it is an awesome a/v surround unit.
Composite and componet, yes. Analog I am not sure.

wow, one thing i have to hand to the ps3 is that the ps3 does not have these difficulties. the more i read about this 360 system the more i am steered towards a ps3 in the future. sooner or later the ps3 will have a comprable library and when the price drops i think i am going to go with them this round. in the future my goal is single HDMI connections through a single reciever to a tv. thus the HDMI must support dd5.1, DTS and such via that cable. this would unfortunately exclude xbox from what i am reading. by the way why do i have to buy a 200.00 adapter to play HD-DVD on a 360 while the ps3 is br ready out of the box?

the 360 is a mess but offers cheap Hdef, solid online and a solid list of games.
the PS3 is only better if you have money and don't mind game droughts.

Kind of a bummer. But I guess I can still run audio through the optical cable and get DTS/Surround. Please tell me the Elite will be able to output sound through Optical and Video through HDMI?

if it did that it would not be crippled, the audio outputs have not changed they just tacted HDMI onto the video with basic 2 ch audio piped thew HDMI they could have saved them selfs allot of time and effort by just making a conversion cable and forcing the display mode....

"the PS3 is only better if you have money and don't mind game droughts."

in the past i have found out that spending the extra cash and waiting on the game droughts outweighs an inferior console. maybe the newer 360 will have dd capability via HDMI and i'll reconsider ms however right now if i were to buy today it would be ps3. ironicaly the very reasons that persuaded me to go for the xbox over the ps2 are the same reasons i am now considering ps3 over xbox360.

Doh, if the outputs 2 channel stereo that must mean all of the games are stereo as well.

Is that a bit of an oversight when its been the growin trend for games, especially fps to support 5.1 sound to give a more immersive game play?

Oh i see it has an optical out, doesnt that mean that it will still do 5.1 over the optical instead or is that only stereo 2?

600$ OTT console with no games = fail.
it needs 2 years to mature to be worth getting, the 360 still needs time to be fully worth 400.

the WII is just about right.

plazma247
Not quite the 360 can do 5.1 Dolby Surround thew its output cables,so plug it into a fancy receiver and it can then put it to 5.1 speakers.

its kinda like the PS3 you still need a decent setup to make use of it beyond 2ch.

zippy i know where you're comming from however this is the same exact situation the oem xbox faced yeras ago and it did not fail.

i am looking to integrate a large lcd flat panel tv to be wall mounted and that tv will run off a single HDMI cable. all components must channel 5.1, DTS via this HDMI cable as at this point of a digital age it is silly to run all kinds of analog cables to compensate for an inferior console.
Out of the box the ps3 is HDMI 5.1, DTS ready and it can play Blu-ray dvds as well. now the price compare
360= 400 unit, 50 digital optical cable, 200 HD DVD player add on=650
ps3= 600 unit every thing is inclusive=600 savings of 50.00

when you compare further a Blu-ray stand alone player is 1000 bucks so the ps3 is a bargain even without games. the last i read about ps3 this unit is self inclusive with nothing to buy exept memory cards if you even want them. these are the very reasons i went xbox last time and the ps3 just looks damn cool!! buy going ps3 i have a gamming console and br HD DVD player all in one with no add ons and one single cable to do everything. this is both very budget attractive and astetically pleasing. there is one other closing note sony has always had the best controller and they have kept it for three generations. The wii i just have no interest in.
In closing the last time i checked the online gaming for sony ps sytems was free?? xbox charges....

Ok far as i can see two ways to do this:

1. get a box from:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/svideo-spdif.php
or
http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcabl...-Converter.html

This will convert from the optical output to standard spdif

or

2. Do the following mod:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/svideo-spdif.php

This will convert the optical to standard spdif, which maybe more preferable for many people want 5.1 out of the xbox,

or Just pay £50 and get :

http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcabl...le-optical.html

Which does it all in one :) cable and converts from the optical tos jack

Which makes me wounder, if the existing 360 has a cable out there that does it all, ie 5.1 and hd video why one EARTH has the 360 leet got just a stereo feed ....

hehe i just wounder if its cus the leet 360 wont even play a HD-DVD 5.1 audio through the optical because of a limitation of either the hardware, not supporting Demux of 5 channel or is it something else... like maybe not wanting to pay dobly for the licence per unit for it to decode DTS 5.1 audio, instead seatling for stereo decode ?

Or maybe they are gona drop the optical jack of the leet 360 ?

WHO knows but seams crazy that the 360 leet says stereo and theres a cable im staring out right now to give HDMI with 5.1 ?

318.4.2007 12:51

plazma are you kidding? the 360 won't play a HD DVD in 5.1 or DTS thru the optical cable? if what you are saying is true this system is trash! why would you want it? ridiculous that you have to bandade this inferior console to do what it should have done out of a frikkin' box?

This message has been edited since its posting. Latest edit was made on 08 Apr 2007 @ 12:52

328.4.2007 13:05

duno chap ive not got a 360 and as the leet version with the HD-DVD player version is not out yet, im sure they are few people who are going to know.

Even though it says it wont do 5.1 im assuming this is based on one of the following limitations

1. Hardware wont allow 5.1 DTS decode of HD-DVD
2. Software decoder wont allow 5.1 decode of HD-DVD
3. or most likely the rear of the leet version wont be any diff from the existing version, which do only give stereo if using their normal HD output cable.

But that cable converts using the optical instead, i was pondering if it would overcome the issue by bypassing the standard stereo out provided.

It obviously does for the games and by the looks of it the dvds.

And cheif i dont want a 360 i never have but, its good 2 mull over as people out there have and im sure they would want to know if their 360 could do 5.1

And yes it is ridiculous it doesnt do this out of the box, but the fact remains is it capable of doing it and if it is why on earth cant they ship it with this cable and not some cheaper stereo one without the built in optical to HDMI digital signal convertor.

and how much of the PS3 is made in china?

Sadly china is sued for nearly everything,a bad factory put the 360s together badly and MS refused to deal with past that its more MSs fault for not doing proper quality control after the fact.

this explains it in the past china had a whole assembly line of personell shot in a firing squad because tey put together a faulty line of refridgerators. i guess they are now getting more humanitarian. you must remember that most of dchina is athiest so they they have no god to answer to "or do they?" most likely a good deal of ps3 is put together in china probrably at the factory that made the faulty fidges.

Well my 360 says made in china on its underside (saw it when I was taking back to Walmart) and as far as it's inners go, I would be willing to bet that "lowest bidder" probably played a big part in its manufacture. Don't get me wrong I really like to play games on it.It is good entertainment and so is the PS3(wish for more unique games) I am just disheartened that it broke in the fourth month. I thought that given 1 year from its release and $400.00 it should last longer than what I have personally seen and heard.

398.4.2007 20:09

well there are 2 levels of china goods thos with some quality control thos without well all know where most of the bad 360s come from.

then again but then again sony has had lens issues on almost a wide a scale over 2 or 3 revisions it even poped up in the slim line.

All in all I think MS hardware issues are a bit worse but hopefully they will get fixed by the end of the year...

at the end of the day when the sega megadrive was released no-one even knew what a hdmi was let alone the difference between 1.2 and 1.3 the games industry needs to stop worrying about all the cables and chips they are putting in their consoles and making games enjoyable and interesting again because lets face it the gaming worlds on a bit of a downhill trend, they may be able to make rain look realistic but when like the ps3 you dont have any titles to make rain look realistic on its pretty plain to see why even me being an avid xbox supporter has a ds lite and a wii because when it comes to having fun i can quite happily play all night and with friends, if you want to play blu-rays fair enuf buy a ps3 but if you want to play games buy an xbox 360 because gt5 and mgs4 arnt going to persuade me over gears of war 2 and halo 3, but it all boils down to the fact that like many others i enjoy gaming because its fun and its all golden bringing out a console with a huge list of chips and gizmos but its always going to be a games console, people want to play games, p.s xbox live is worth paying for because then u can play games online instead of twiddle ure thumbs on psonline waiting for titles ;)

Haha trust a 360 fan boy to find a one year old thread to unleash some ps3 hate.

And its not like with a years head start on ps3 maybe thats part of the reason theres far more titles... however its not like the ps3 not managing to outsell the 360 in most places now.

Ummm look apples are better than oranges because they taste of apple.....
