U.S. PlayStation 3 sales stabilize

U.S. PlayStation 3 sales stabilize According to Sony America, the European launch of the PlayStation 3 has constrained supplies to North American retailers.
Although the company stated that PS3 sales were up 2 percent for the month, they added, "We continued to find ourselves supply constrained in March due primarily to the shift in manufacturing focus to the PS3 PAL version to support the launch of the system in Europe."

The Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by over 70,000 units but for the month, its sales were down 12 percent. The Wii finished with double the sales of the PS3 but saw its sales fall by 22 percent.

In non next-gen news, the Playstation 2 outsold all the the next gen consoles, and both the Nintendo DS and the PSP sold very well for the month.

"March 2007 showed a 24 per cent increase in retail dollars generated year-over-year for the PlayStation brand in North America with total sales of USD 447 million, due in part to the addition of the PS3 platform as well as the strong launch performance of God of War II for PS2 at retail," the company's statement reads.

"On the software front, we were pleased to see sales increases from February for both the PSP and PS2. PS2 software showed a 29 per cent increase with the launch of God of War II and PSP software demonstrated a 13 per cent jump."

With the PS2 still selling well, it makes me wonder if Sony could have waited another year or so to work out more bugs and add or "borrow" features to the PS3. It also makes me wonder if the PS2 is at its graphical limits.

Nevermind the waffle designed to obscure the truth, what are the month on month NPD PS3 sales figures?

Jan 244,000
Feb 127,000
Mar 130,000

So sales are about the same in march as Feb (taking into account the slightly longer month).

Basically sales fell off of a cliff and now continue to limp along at that new low level.

Same as everywhere else.

Short fanboy rush, slight boost from a/v enthusiasts going for the cheapest best spec'd BD player then tumbleweed.

My how their investors must be thrilled - along with the people at the Sony games division that are being laid off now.
How comforted by all that laughable "shipped" BS do you think they are now, huh?

yes investors are happy "hughjars" cus the ps2 is still outselling eveything and psp is doing great. you are the only fanboy here cus you deny this fact and dont mention that MS is 5 billion in the hole in their game division, im sure investors arent happy about that.

also the only place 360 is doing well is the US, everywhere else it is bombing, especially in japan where it is doing worse than the original xbox was doing in the same timespan. its also funny that ps3 is doing so well with no killer apps and a pricetag much higher than any other console in the market. playstation surely is a strong brand whether you like it or not lemming.

oh yeah and MS has yet to meet their 10 million sold goal months after they initially stated their BS that they did. funny that a short while after they spewed their BS they had to admit it was actually a "shipped" number when everyone caught them in their lie.

Sony is not doing any better in other parts of the world, so I would not get so cocky about it.

Standard DVD is the winner of the format war IMHO.

- Er, who mentioned microsoft (aside from you)?

Can't you fanboys ever address a subject without turning it into yet another of your tedious ravings about microsoft v sony?

Try and stick to topic for a change, eh?

(......and if you really want to talk about microsoft the facts are that they have deeper pockets and can sustain the losses far more easily than Sony.
I don't hear of any lay-offs at microsoft, do you?)

its a wonder MS can power threw the hardware issues like they have if they didn't corner the market on OS's and other things they would be broke right now.

Why should these figures surprise anyone :)

i cant agree more

blu-ray/ HD-DVD £25+ dvd new releases £8

content is always the main draw not picture quality since dvd anyway, and i dont really want a 40+" screen in my home.

and wtf do you want to have hdcp aacs bd+ and all the other high definition DRM shoved down you throats while hollywood deem your dvd connection invalid and block the picture?

High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection

Quote:
HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc and DVD players (with HDMI or DVI connector) use HDCP to establish an encrypted digital connection. If the display device—or in the case of using a PC to decrypt and play back HD-DVD or Blu-ray media, the graphics card (hardware, drivers and playback software)—does not support HDCP, then a connection cannot be established. As a result, a black picture and/or error message will likely be displayed instead of the video content.

Content providers for HD-DVD and Blu-ray media can set an Image Constraint Token (ICT) flag that will only output full-resolution digital signals using a digital HDCP connection. If a HDCP enabled player is connected to a non-HDCP-enabled television set with a non-HDCP-compliant analog connection (VGA or Component), and the content is flagged, the player will output a downsampled 960x540 pixel signal. If using non-HDCP-compliant DVI connection (with HDMI to DVI cable), the user will not get any picture at all. Many older high-definition television sets currently in use are not HDCP-capable, and this would negate some of the key benefits of HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc for those consumers.
ps3 = the beginning of DRM HELL

for every 100 ppl employeed at any DRM loving corp. there are at least 1000 on the net that are more then willing to remove it for us :)

oh please the PS3 is no more crippled with DRM than the PS2 was hell even the GC/DC/WII have insane DRM on thier discs compared to the DVD based systems even BR will be cracked in no tiem nothing new there.

I think Hdef will have its time but for at least 3-6 years DVD will be the main storage type for retail media. outside of 6 years BR or HDVD could grow in their niche but I see DVD being the center of things for 10 years.

Good food for thought, but I think it ultimately a bad idea for Sony to have waited any longer than they did to release the ps3. Software for the ps3 would've been scrambled more than it already is. I doubt any third party would have wanted to publish an exclusive on the system when the 360 and Wii would've had much larger market share. Furthermore, Blu-ray sales wouldn't have gotten the much needed sales injection that the ps3 provided (and apparently, is still providing).

As for ps2 being maxed out graphically, I think it was already being pushed to it's limits. GOW2 looks fantastic, but I havn't been amazed at any titles since Black came out a year ago.

CaLiMaCk, ur post was obnoxious. hughjars saw the truth.

this is EXACTLY wat is happening, inital fanboy/av rush, then no interest from the general public who cant get over a 1000 dollar (aus) pricetag. In australia ps3 isn't doing so hot.

U said "ps2 is still outselling eveything and psp is doing great"... ps2 is also around 100 bucks, so basically if u haven't realised, whats going to kill the ps3 ISN'T wii or 360, it'll be ps2. Why would mr and mrs joe average buy a ps3 for 1000 dollars, when a ps2 is 100? They don't the difference! They dont care that lil timmy didn't get the latest and greatest!

Xbox 360 isn't bombing anywhere BUT japan, and im yet to see any evidence that "the great japanese market" still can make or break a console. The japanese market is so off the track from western gaming that i dont particualr care what fails or succeeds there, japans population 50 mil, europe 400? + mil n.usa 300 mill, basically the xbox 360 appeals or HAS THE CHANCE to appeal to around 700 mil ppl.

"its also funny that ps3 is doing so well with no killer apps" - well its SIMPLY NOT DOING SO WELL, and all there future "killer apps" are now multiport.

"playstation surely is a strong brand whether you like it or not lemming. " yes it is a strong brand, thats why ppl still buy ps2's (read above). And ur calling some1 that sees the truth behind the bs a lemming? Ur one dumb fanboi.

1827.4.2007 14:08

Sorry for the double post but im not sure on how to edit posts, however i did a quick check of europes/japans populations. Europe has 760 million ppl, and japan 120 million.

So, USA + EURO = 1.06 billion ppl. japans is roughly 1/10th the size, so my original comment stands, i DO NOT believe japans influence in the console wars to be of that great a sway

the edit button sometimes dispersers in the comment sections you have to go into the forum section then into the news then to the comment thread and it will always show there.

all in all MS has re made thier brand for the 360 by moving first despite the cost (BWC and shotty hardware) the PS2 is still competeign with the newer systems and people will be turned off by the PS3s price the WII of coarse will be dissed on many levels but dose what it dose well and is selling madly because of its price.

I see the PS3 doing well in the long run however so many mistakes have been made they need 2-4 years to fix these issues(online, read speed issue, size issues,BWC issues, price issues).

its a mess I am surprised everyone jumping on the untested beast of the PS3 and eating up the 360 with all its issues the consumers are being lead blindly...oh well black sheeple haver always been mocked for nto being another lemming.......(falls off a cliff) 0-o
