PlayStation creator steps down

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 27 Apr 2007 11:09 User comments (41)

PlayStation creator steps down After almost a decade of being the top video game maker, Sony now finds itself in third behind Nintendo and Microsoft and a turn around is obviously necessary.
Yesterday, in the latest string of developments in an effort to turn the company around it was revealed that PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi would leave the company by the end of June.

Sony expects to have a large $2 billion USD loss for its video game unit, fueled by slow sales for the PS3 and high operating costs for the console.

Kutaragi wil be replaced by Kazuo Hirai, the president of the worldwide PlayStation unit. Hirai is considered an ally of CEO Howard Stringer, the man who many feel asked for the resignation of Kutaragi.

Stringer and Kutaragi had a few disagreements over the years, and according to the Wall Street Journal, one of those issues was Kutaragi's lack of communication with other Sony officials. The disagreement eventually lead to Kutaragi losing control of daily operations. Further angering officials, Kutaragi went far over budget for PS3 development costs and questioned Sony's manufacturing practices.

This should answer some of our question on who is winning the console war at the moment. Remember there is a old rule of thumb that we have been taught in teaching English and it can be used in any field. Which is called the KISS- Keep It Simple Stupid Method. Its as easy as that.

Thats normally what happens when someone designs a lousy product, They get fired (quietly leave). But thats not going to increase sales.

Good to see a news article on Sony where they aren't bragging about X number of units sold or how much better they are or everything else.

I just believe the PS3 is beginning to be a failure, it's just hard for Sony fanboys to believe it because the PS2 dominated and did so well they figure people will just buy into the name. Clearly Kutaragi leaving is a clear indication at Sony's disappointment with the way things are currently going.

You can't be serious Kutaragi was striped of his duty's like 6 months ago the writing was on the wall for him to leave & to be honest i don't think no one at Sony going to miss him.He was a Airhead & Alway's make dumb ass comments he couldn't live up too.On top of that he wasn't willing to work with other co-workers i hope Kaz will clean up the garbage he made.

527.4.2007 13:43

wow reminds me of what happened to sega I wound not say the PS3 is as strong as the DC was but sony should have no trouble keeping the PS3 afloat.

ya 400-450 would be the prefect price for the PS3,of coarse sony will never lower it for another year or 2.

excuse me, i believe the ps and ps2 were perfectly fine coming from him. if the whole gdamn company didn't decide to do that mashup with the Blu-ray dvd player and game console we wouldn't be having this problem. who gives a flying f*ck if they're cheaper than Blu-ray players on market? i wanted a game console not a frickin dvd player.

The PS2 had allot of issues and over 14 revivsons includering the slim line you have to wonder what they where thinking to keep dcking with the hardware that could not have helped costs much the PSX had only 6 or revvisons well maybe 9 by the time you add the PSone.

Hes not helped Sony/PS3 any with some of the things he has said and plus when the company looks bad its now the corporate motto to change CEOs to distract from the real issue of things...

1028.4.2007 03:38

Just because their product cost a little more then you would prefer dont make it a lousy product. They may not have marketed everything correctly but they dont have hardly any hardware failures like any product that so many hold so dear to their hearts. I agree they should lower the prices but overall i have never had any issues with it.

1128.4.2007 08:10

spydah
so far thats in thier favor, how current are your games?
hows the loading times evolving?
from what I have seen the load times is the main tec hurdle that they need to deal with ASAP.

1228.4.2007 08:12

u know if u get a xbox 360 with its HD DVD player witch they cant make games with because not to many people have bought it and get wifi and HDMI ur gonna end up paying more for the 360 than u would with the ps3 you do realize this right.

well, yea the ps2 had issues, what console doesn't, but did it ever have the sales problems that ps3 is having now? can someone confirm that or anything? i was fine with purchasing a first generation ps2 and i never had problems with it and its still working fine now.

but i absolutely balk at buying a ps3 for so many reasons.

and anyway i was protesting nextgen67's comments. i appreciate that the man created playstation even if he seems to have screwed up with ps3.

give me the big reason he screwed up my ps3 has not given me any problems.

There hasn't been any issue with Load times on the PS3 as of now. They have been better than 360.

Okay on one hand your saying that the PS & PS2 was fine then you saying that Sony messed up with the Blu-ray.Do you know that Blu-ray inside the PS3 was Ken Kutaragi idea.So before you protect him make sure you know what he has done for Sony & didn't do.Ken Kutaragi is the reason Sony catch so much hell because his mouth & being stubborn.

Sony is kicking Ken Kutaragi out. So what, that is not going to help the PS3 sell. What they need to do is get the price right around $350 $400. But they were just talking about putting a bigger HD in it that is crazy. Quite playing around with the HD and find a way to build the PS3 cheaper so they can sell it cheaper. I like the PS and I like Sony but I believe they are going in the wrong direction.

well I'm not surprised, they've been overcommercializing video games for well over a decade, and that guy is right the DC was in almost half of peoples homes and SEGA cut its head off. I want my FFVII remake! It could be awhile... This is Sony for petes sake, the same people that used to charge $300 for a walkman.

I couldn't agree with you more Sony is going in the wrong direction if they are worry about the HD.Sony should have a price cut this Fall down to 450 & i think that would be enough to get unit moving even more.Sony biggest problem they face now is price not the HD.

For me, the PS3 just came across as trying too hard. The PS1 was, for it's time, the best 3D console with great selection of games. The PS2 also had great games even if it was not the most powerful at 3D or graphics.

Now the PS3 is out, and guess what...crap game selection. I think that is hurting the PS3 just as much as its high price. I would LOVE to see another Final Fantasy game based on FFVII. Even moreso, I would love to see Square produce another gem like Chrono Trigger - my all time favorite game for any platform.

On related topic, it's worth bringing up that the PSP was pretty much a dud too. It seemed promising at first, but I think the Gameboy is still #1 for handheld gaming. Sony's two most recent consoles are bombing out.

well i did say in a later post that he was the one that screwed it up.

what zippyg said. ^-^. but lack of games aside, i know its a fantastic console. i've played it and it's cool, even if you have to keep updating your firmware every couple weeks but i supposed that'll slow down later. i just hate that suddenly, they shove a bluray player/game console hybrid at us to try and beat hddvd and then expect us to buy it "because it's cheaper than a bluray dvd player". i've said it once and i'll say it again, i want a game console, not a frickin bluray player. not for that price and not for those shitty games.

2128.4.2007 15:18

lol i can take that point i see the blu ray as a bonus =) but take there are very few games for it.

I think thats a huge understatement the PSP has not out sold the DS but the PSP sells has been very good to the point Sony making profit off the PSP that how you can't tell if its a bomb or not.Just because the PSP isn't number one don't mean its not doing very good which it is.

You can't afford it, you don't like the games and you don't want a BlueRay player. Looks like you dhouldn't buy a PS3 then.

End of story.

Did anybody think the creator of Playstation could go on forever? Sooner or later ideas will run dry and bad decisions will be made because of it. This happens all the time in big business but you just don't hear about it. No big deal. Maybe this is just the kick in the ass they need.

the PSP is barely selling the games for it laughable, even with the newer ones coming out its still a lost cause.

djeazyg
he has a point the launch titles are painful the price is OTT and they tried to hard to add BR to it.

All in all for the normal gamer its worth 300-400$ if you are a high tech gamer or a Hdef acolyte.

the 360 might be a mess but tis more worth the 400$ than the PS3 is.

2629.4.2007 10:22

Sure he has a point. His point. I was just hoping he would tell me again how he doesn't want a BlueRay player as if that is why they built PS3. The games are coming. Late..... but they are coming.

The 360 is the better console or buy (however you want to put it)for right now. The future may have a different story and probably will. The 360 is showing what it has to offer right now. The PS3 is just getting started and they have the mistakes of the 360 to learn from.
Will Sony win the war? Probably not but anybody that thinks the PS3 is going away is just retarded. The PS3 will be the lesser console this time around but I will still enjoy every game it has to offer.

2729.4.2007 10:48

djeazyg

true true
by next year the new 360s should be more solid prehaps one can hope for better HDMI in the newer elite line.

the PS3 is over priced and I don't see a revolution in games just the same old same old the 360 is sadly the same.

I don't want to waste money so I guess I'll put the 360 off till xmas revauleate it then.

Because the PSP not selling game does not mean that its not selling. The reason its selling good because the PSP has been hacked like crazy & there are alot of places to get games etc....Your talking about software we talking about Hardware. You might want to check PSP sales figure because your going to shocked to see that it doing very well. Will it catch the DS i say no way because DS is selling GOD LIKE right now.

Ya but that dosent really count since sony hacks the cracks every update.

I wonder if they are selling the PSP at a loss it might be pushing hardware but without the software and deals that go wif its probably losing them money and sony refuses to do anything to help it because they are so arrogant.

BTW whats the largest storage device for the PSP so far? :X

but i loved sony and playstation. i was just looking forward to it for the longest time and am highly disappointed at how its turned out to be. i believe i already addressed it in another forum that, if ps3 had anything to offer besides being "new," "shiny" and "high-tech", i would buy it in a heartbeat, price tags aside.

and they did put the bluray in there hoping to beat hddvd and kickstart the trend into bluray. i read it somewhere. have to go dig up the article.

I know that Ken Kutaragi gets a bad rap here on Afterdawn, but I have a subscription to PSM and he would appear for interviews with those guys all the time and is actually a really nice guy. But when you are the face of something like he was with the PS3 you get none of the credit for successes and all the blame whenever something goes wrong. With all the M$ fan boys on here he gets plenty of blame whenever they perceive that something went wrong.

EDIT: Wanted to get my sig in here about what happens to fan boys.

Actually in Japan when the upper management is mad at someone they are given a corner office and given worthless tasks until such time as they are considered worthy of given real work again. It is considered an insult and they usually quit, which is what Kutaragi has done. But the company doesnt look bad by firing him. The Japanese companies and the people who work for them have this thing called loyalty that people in "the west" have forgotten about, even though America taught them how to do business the "western way" after America bombed them.

357.5.2007 19:59

wetsparks

most of that rings true for the states only loyalty is to money and power rarely to brand or people.

I thought ken was "downgraded" to R&D and he still works at sony?

oh wait I see
from wiki
"2006/2007 SCEI management shuffle

On November 30, 2006, Kutaragi was replaced as President of Sony Computer Entertainment by Kaz Hirai, the President of SCE America. In addition to other management changes, Kutaragi was promoted to chairman of SCEI, and retained his position as chief executive officer of the group.[12]

On April 26, 2007 It was announced that Sony made Kutaragi retire and instead take up the role of Honorary Chairman. Taking over his position will be current SCEI president and CEO Kaz Hirai, who will be promoted to president and CEO. [13][14]

While it was originally expected to give Sony new momentum, PS3 sales were ultimately disappointing, and according to the Wall Street Journal article, the company is now dealing with $2 billion in losses related to its video games division over the past year (ending March 31.) Sony CEO Howard Stringer has famously been reshuffling the company's executive lineup since last fall.[citation needed]"

So he was fired and removed altogether a shame its not really all his fault the higher ups approved it but he gets all the blame meh humans.....I dont see how they can fix it without a "model 2" revamp I bet they will back pedal on BWC I wish I could find some real info on tier plans for BWC I have a feelign in order to promote Digi distro they will discontinue BWC because it cuts in on their profit, even Nintendo is doing this the WII dose not have a DS player announced if it had such a device I would be happy to buy it even if it was 100$ I really dislike portables.... .

367.5.2007 20:38

The honorary chairman is the key part of your wiki quote. Even though he got "credited" with all the playstation things, he also got blamed for the higher ups deciding to make it $600. As if they thought that putting in a blue ray player to push that would be cheap. I think if they bit the bullet and made it $500 originally and $400 for the stripped down version they would have done better.

Even though that is expensive, still people would think it was a great deal for something as diverse and powerful as the playstation is.

Games like Resistance are first party games where Sony gets all the profits instead of a something like Madden where they have to split the profits with EA. With all the games that Sony is able to make themselves they are going to make their money back fairly quickly if they are able to put their ego aside and do something aggressive to get their system into peoples homes.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site//olspage.jsp...0&type=category
That is a list of games coming out for the ps3 here soon and it is impressive.
Army of Two
Assassin's Creed
Devil May Cry 4
Metal Gear Sold 4
Resident Evil 5
Heavenly Sword
Hot Shots Golf 5
Gran Turismo
The last three being first party games where they make the most money. Then there are sequels that people always eat up like the sports games, Def Jam, the WWII games and ports.

My point is there are plenty of games that people will buy if they just do what it takes to get people to buy the system, that includes fixing the backwards compatibility because even though the games don't have the new pretty graphics they are still fun to play, which Zippy, you complain about most.

EDIT: Forgot about Warhawk.

the gameplay is not better than the Xbox/PS2/GC games I am catching up on thus gets no respect for begin 5X the cost :P

But really didn't this CEOs understand they are fighting to make BR the main format I mean come on 400-500 for the PS3 would have the PS3 and BR on fing top and if they went a step further and removed the blue tooth/ /Ethernet/HD from it sold it for 350 or 300 and then sold thos add ons at 30-60 a pop they would have even done better and possibly been even or a tad behind the WII in sales..

BTW I got FF12 been playing it for the past couple of days a quick score for it

Over all Score 7 of 10

I am surprised at FF12 the live action system could easily use a turn based setup in fact you just have to give out commands when they are ready and its like a TB FF game ,the gambits help grind for levels however its a bit shallow in strategy and the weapons are missing something ,the charatcers are overly generic in battle but over all its a improvement but still missing that FF grandiose uniqueness in charatcers the voice work and dialog for this game is amazing tho I didn't think the indutry had it in them to do something so well this is probably the best dubbed game yet, oh ya I wish they doubled the random loot spots put in a few rares then lowered their show rate by 50 or so % when you find them this way you have more loot showing up randomly in towns and on fields....I had dreams of Balthier using skills like Edger did on FF6..oh how I miss real character classes..

FFX was 6

Except for the Wii, game play is virtually the same no matter the console. As for removal of blue tooth etc, if they did that and incorporated it into the lower priced one and sold it for $350 they would have sold tons of those systems. I could careless about wireless controllers and a headset because most of the people I would probably play against online are teenagers and I sit close enough to the tv that cord length has never been a problem.

The HD, I think, comes from the connector cables from the PS3 to the TV, but I'm not to sure about that. But I do agree with you that if they had the basic be $350ish and add ons for little bit more they would be sold out as most people dont have HD and would probably only buy a wireless adapter for the PS3 to play online without cables and to play with that PSP/PS3 connection thing that Sony is working on.

As for FF12, you'll come to find that the strategy in the gambit system is quite deep. Though the loot is just stuff to sell off to the merchant and nothing else and the weapon and armor system is sad for a FF but the License board is what sets your characters apart instead of making them all the same. As you progress a bit and have your characters define themselves it becomes more interesting, at the beginning it is a little overwhelming. It is also a whole lot less linear than FF10, I spent about 60 hours just wandering around doing different side quests and I don't remember much of the story because of it. Have had to start new games just to find out what the story is because of all the other stuff you can do. But all this should probably be discussed somewhere else.

397.5.2007 23:51

wetsparks
I don't use gambits I don't like auto fights unless they are weaklings or I am grinding, I wish you could double team attacks better the whole wait after you put in the first command makes timing them annoying also you don't move as a group well so tag and run dosent work well I guess it is not suppose to, in all its a step forward and a step back winding up the same at least for battles the live action type makes fighting a faster but you do lose some control I wish I could detach the cam from the leader and look around and give out orders in a more stradgy game style.

FF12 has improved landscaping ,towns ,VAing ,made battles faster
they still need to work on battle strategy ,equipment/items and classes/unique character skills.

I have very mixed view on the LP board on hand you can build your own class on the other you can grind for uberness I have not gotten the nack of useing it prehaps they should have added a auto class mode that can be turned off where it blanks out everything not in that class thus helping you learn the ins and outs of the LP grid..I am 6 hours into the game just recursed palito or whatever her name is and I think I will restart so I can pay more attention to class builds.

BTW I am so annoyed Vahn cant dual wiled.....hes a thief god darnit.....give me 2 daggers and I am happy ><, I also miss the alt fire magic on the classic FF weapons rod=throwing stars oh the fun "trick" weapons could bring to the newer FFs.

just a follow up to my earlier comment. i found that article in another forum post.

Is the PlayStation 3 a Trojan horse to help sell Bluray films?

Quote:
Wood thus sounds confident when he claims: "Blu-ray discs are outselling HD DVD by three to one in the US." And, he adds, "if I do a good job then in six months we won't be having a conversation [about formats]. And the PS3 is going to help us do the job ... Potentially, we'll have 10 times more [Blu-ray] players [in the form of PS3s] out there by the end of the year."

IMO they added BR to the PS3 to help BR as the main movie format but at the same tiem they refuse to sell it under cost to simply win if you could but a PS3 minus Bluetooth,HDD,WIFI,Card reader and ethernet then sell thos for 30-60 a pop and sale the striped down PS3 for 350 sony would have "WON" the trouble is sony has been going about this arse backwards and their gettign bite on the butt right now becuse the PS3 is simply to costly.

With that said the PS3 should do well after they lower it to 450 or 400 in the next couple of years but if sony refuses to drop the price its the new DC doomed to failure....
