StarTech releases portable slim 8X DVD burner Today, StarTech released its SLIMDVDRW8U2 compact, portable burner for those lacking optical drives and users who prefer to use the same burner for multiple systems.
The drive, made by Panasonic is ultra-compact, measuring only a half an inch high. It has an max 8x burning speed for single layer burning and 4x for dual-layer discs. The drive can also burn DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs at 6X and 5X respectively.

The drive is completely powered through its USB 2.0 connection and also uses a special tray-loading mechanism for ability to read mini CDs and DVDs that are used by the occasional camcorder.

The drive goes on sale today or $155 USD and is supported by almost all Mac and Windows PCs.

This is all well and good but i can find a better burner for a cheaper price.

So they basically took a modern laptop dvd ram drive and stuck it in an exteranl bay.

Apart from doing dvd ram disks whats special about that ??




Why not just save your money and buy any old $20 dvd ram drive and use any old £20 usb to ide convertor.

You could buy 3 for the cost of that.

Plus when the drive fails you dont have to go looking for some specific interface connection, just thrown on any ide drive and your away again.
