Xbox 360 getting 65nm "Falcon" chips this fall

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 09 Jul 2007 4:11 User comments (36)

Xbox 360 getting 65nm "Falcon" chips this fall Dean Takahashi, the man who first confirmed the Xbox 360 IPTV as well as the Xbox 360 Elite has now confirmed that starting in the fall, 360's will come equipped with 65nm microprocessors and GPUs codenamed "Falcon."
Apparently, Microsoft is still getting the new Falcon chips and a redesigned motherboard qualified but the new 360s will be available by fall.

The new chips are smaller, run cooler and are almost 50 percent cheaper to produce than the current 90nm chips. With reports flooding the internet that 30 percent of 360s have failed and experienced the three red rings of death, the new cooler chips should help to lower that rate in the future.

Recently, Microsoft began a $1 billion USD initiative to give extended warranties and free repairs to gamers who have experience the rings of death.

Sure, why not add something that should of been added to the other 11,000,000 or whatever consoles? This is beginning to get dumb. One thing after another! What about the people who already own a 360?

What about them? This happens with almost all consoles,PS1.PS2,PS3,GBA,Super Nintendo,Genesis, and so on.What you didnt expect Microsoft to change a thing with the Xbox 360?I dont feel bad about it,nor do I feel bad about the elite.Dont have a 1080p display(have 720p/1080i)and if I want the HD i'll just go out and buy it

69.7.2007 17:19

its reasons like this why i wait, and recommend to others, to wait a few years to purchase consoles and other hi-profile devices
for those of you who have an old 360, maybe you could try like getting one of those extended warranties and then waiting until these new upgrades are implemented and THEN saying "hey my sh1t doesnt work anymore fix it!!!!"

79.7.2007 17:22

so you mean instead of 30% it'll be in the ballpark of 20-25%? :/

89.7.2007 17:32

haha yea it might just bring it down a little

It's not just one thing though.

well, I was lucky. I won an Xbox 360 when they first came out through the Mountain Dew sweepstakes. I sold it on ebay for over $800. I just bought a new xbox 360 elite so it doesn't really bother me. It has warranty, HDMI, and I like the color. I think it was worth the wait.

I don't think that the HDMI is fully compatable as it should be, so I've heard

man... now when my xbox 360 does break down with the 3 red lights i guess theres no point of fixing it cuz its gonna just break again. and i will have to use around 400- 600 dollars on another xbox 360. by then i can just buy a ps3 anyways. i dunno yet. when my 360 does break then i'll decide

Well you could always throw your 360 in a freezer... I don't think it's got enough power to overheat in below 30*F or 0*C(don't really no farenheight or whatever).

149.7.2007 18:17

Its so funny to see how MS keeps ripping people off. They get people all hyped over the Elite and they profit yet again on something partially done and sell you the better version later lol. This is what i mean about all of the current companies we all chose as to buy stuff from. They all are greedy they all want your money at any cost. Some more extreme then others. But this is a whole other kind of extreme.

I agree. Charging for "Live", "Microsoft Points", new maps for games(some they basicly force you to, like Halo 2), and so on. And now as time advances, their consoles are being enhanced with things that should have been included with the console at launch.

Thats the who strategy they told people they didnt need all this stuff to make a console and be successful and look at em. I know its gonna be some blind loyal 360 freak thats gonna find some way to defend this but M$ sucks much azz right now. They charge you $480 for the first run of crap systems. Then make those people pay or have to completely by another system. Then they re-release the same system saying there isnt any issues people bought into that. Then they release the Elite which was suppose to address these issues that should been done a long ass time ago. Then they re-release the Elite with a Falcon Cooler system that should have been done 3 years ago. Oh and yes they upgraded the HD features and now doing IPTv. I think i wanna poop my pants with Joy!!!!

Also while its fresh in my mind. People been bagging Sony all its marketing failures and so forth I could sit here and name all the things people had and still have to say about them but M$ is definitely worst as far as charging and charging and charging and charging you some more. They did finally admit they owned people with BS systems and will give a 3 year extension but is that really righting the wrong no but yes it is a somewhat start. I rather pay $500 - $600 for a PS3 at this moment then keep paying M$ for all their short comings and that even includes when they put out their new rumble controller.

I feel ripped off also. I have spent many dollars on this 360 setup, and I feel like I will have to spend many more to get what I should have got from the start.

"You reading this M$?"

229.7.2007 18:59

I feel ripped off with the hard drive but thats about it.They made up for the 3 red lights so I dont have too many things to complain about(should of done that a long time ago though)

239.7.2007 20:19

LOL @ people "getting ripped off". People, hardware goes through modifications all the time. The ps2 had like 12 different versions, and you can bet the ps3 will have some as well. It already has, actually.
And in case you can't put 2 and 2 together, it is Microsoft that is bearing the brunt of faulty consoles (as it should be) - not the consumer. How could they take a loss if you had to pay for it?
Oh, yeah. Right.

This is as dumb as getting angry that Sony is making better controllers. WHAT GIVES?!?!?!?!?!

Well GO PAY FOR YOUR SONY then ! Damn....do you have to be all stupid about something Microsoft is trying to make right? Nobody is forcing you to buy anything Sony fanboy!

I wonder what happen if someone has a old 360 but send it off to get it fixed will this chip fit into the old 360? i don't think it will so you got only 3 year knowing that your 360 might die after that.It good they fixed the issue but cmon after 11 million console was sold on top of the a 30% failure rate.

Your right but this isn't a modification to make the console cheaper it a modification to fix a problem they been having since Launch. You can believe that lie if you want about this is a modification to make it cheaper.I give Microsoft credit for doing this but damm after 11 million console sold then they down played the issue they didn't have any choice but to give 360 owner's the three year warranty.

Hahaha you need to fall back on the drama. You getting bent out of shape because i said I rather pay Sony. You act like I said Sony was GOD and you need to bow down. I am certain you seen plenty of post from me on the SONY & M$ debates. So i dont know if you can read or you just having issues interrupting what i say. But they both got issues its people like you whom is a fanboy and a fanboy would respond like you did for M$. They both got plus and minus in the issues department which i have stated. So next time before you get all worked up get worked up for the right reason and not for a forum response.

Every console goes through revisions if it's lifespan is long enough. How many different versions of the Super Nintendo were there? GameBoy? Or the Sega Genesis? The PSOne? The PS2?

I'm not a Microsoft Fanboy defending them. Let's face it, the PS3 just flat-out has the potential for more. The simple fact is that as time goes on the technology that is available becomes cheaper, easier to produce and more readily available. This has always been the case with computer hardware and gaming consoles are nothing short of mini-tower computers at this point.

Is Microsoft cashing in, definitely, but this has been their motto since they started making Windows. However offensive it has been to this point, it is obviously working or they wouldn't have been able to sustain the lifespan of their console even this long. They are just following a simple technological progression as it becomes affordable (which literally translates into as it becomes more profitable) for them to do so.

It's the economic system itself that is broken. The marketing gurus at these large corporations, Sony and Nintendo included, are just taking advantage of it in any way that they can. Ultimately it's up to us as the consumer to choose what we spend our money on and how much we are willing to spend. If you don't like how they are doing business, don't buy from them, there will still be plenty of people that just don't care about a company's ethics and will buy their products anyway.

I agree 100% with you. I have made a similar point on other threads. Its just funny to see people get bent out of shape when my point being made is I dont agree with M$ level of progression. With the Elite its crazy they released that version as a upgrade to fix the overheating issue but then say oh wait we will be re-release this same system later with the cooling system that should have been in the first version. Sony will do the same thing just like they are removing the PS2 emotion engine which they could have done that in the beginning. All systems revise for cost on both sides to help with sales which is fine. But M$ saying hey buy this its our fix for all the other issues then re-release is my biggest problem its a crazy scam from a company that has been around long enough to know that a cooling system in something you want to introduce to be like a PC is vital to how it performs.

What is the big deal? Has anyone noticed the PS3 has gone through 20gb, 60gb and will now have an 80gb version? Not to mention the 60 and 80 will be minus the emotion engine just like their Euro cousins? Or how about buying brand new Sixaxis controllers with RUMBLE. Hell, even the Wii has changed its chipset already to fend off modders.

As far as extras, if Sony ever gets Home going, you're going to see lots of extras and "PlayStation Points" or some equivalent for premium content. If you want to watch a movie, do you think MS has some obligation to give it to you for free? Or maybe a Virtual Console game on Wii? These companies are all trying to increase their bottom line in an industry that depends on selling hardware to make up for it with licensing.

As far as MS being the most guilty, did anyone forget about Sega with the Genesis and Sega CD, then there was a Genesis II with a different Sega CD which also had the 32X? Or how about the N64's rumble packs, memory cards and ram pack that you NEEDED to play Perfect Dark. Come on folks, no need for "fan-boy-ism"; the same racket has been going on for a long time now!

ps2 have its own problem, slim ps2 crashing, maelting laser lens, faulty AC Adaptor. the have more thn 15 revisions for ps2 !

nd now come the new lighter PS2.

MS, N, Sony, will always make revisions.

but MS not using good HSF in the first time they release X360 is really bad act.
now we need to return our 360 to get it have the new HSF. wew...

btw, is this new 360 will be cheaper? i'm planing to buy it if it have the x360 premiun feature and sold at 200-250USD

Is there a specific manufacture date to look for?
