Michael Bay talks out about HD DVD and Microsoft

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 05 Dec 2007 6:54 User comments (48)

Michael Bay talks out about HD DVD and Microsoft Transformers director Michael Bay has made some bold statements on his website, claiming that Microsoft is purposely promoting confusion in the HD format war in an effort to destroy both formats and usher in digital downloads.
"Microsoft wants both formats to fail so they can be heroes and make the world move to digital downloads," said his forum post.

Late in August, Bay posted angry, aggressive responses to the news that Paramount had went HD DVD exclusive and even threatened to not deliver a Transformers sequel. He retracted his threat a week later however.

"That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out 100 million dollar checks to studios just [to] embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, superior Blu-ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital download.

"Time will tell and you will see the truth."

OH NO!!!!! A movie with no SEQUEL?!?!?! :D

Ah, I do love a good conspiracy nut. Even if what he said is true, I can't say I'm too worked up over it.

25.12.2007 23:27

so if this guy is right, then consumer demand for HD movies will require FAST connections, without much increase in plan price (i hope) and maybe even more GB for $, hell i wont mind having that bandwidth =P

edit, the fact that he's believing that whole "MS handing out checks" thing just further shows how wack he is, he should stick to what hes good at, and thats being on a set with a loudspeaker and not spreading MORE confusion

Do anything you can to stop that monstrous bastard from making a sequel to a movie that ruined my childhood transformers memories..

He's spouting 2 month old conspiracy stuff. Pathetic.

they did ALOT of 'nods' like that for the hardcore original fans..
like the yellow VW bug next to bumblebee on the dealer lot, when (cant remember name) jumps onto the (i must be sleepy, cant remember this one either) tank and swings the turret, was taken exactly like that from one of the cartoons, it was great, loved that movie

76.12.2007 02:00

They made jazz black and they killed him.

It was just like watching the opening scene of Jurassic Park..

86.12.2007 02:03

they made him black? wow i didn't know you were a racist.. (just playing haha)
i agree though why kill him rite?

96.12.2007 06:16

Be careful of Michael Bay, so much ranting for a director over something fairly unconnected to his personal future movie production is uncommon....expect a "certified loony" sticker to appear on his head very soon.

Not only do we have download limits, speed constraints and an infrastructure generally ill-equiped for Bay's latest flight-off-fancy
but
as we can see from the recent hefty price-cut on the XBox 360 HD DVD (down to $130/£65! I might just have to go and get another one again at that price - do freebie movies still come with that?) add-on Bay's claims that Microsoft aren't really supporting HD DVD are just more of his (by his own admission) ignorance on the matter.

Anyone care to bet he's out of a job on Transformers 2?

Can you say personal publicity?

Plans are still underway for Transformers 2 set to release in 2009 with Michael Bay returning again for the project as well as Steven Spielberg. The movie was a great adaptaion with plenty of nods towards the original especially the returns of the original Optimus Prime. So its hard to say its not a good movie. But we each have our opinions.

In a way I kind of believe the conspiracy, and Im curious about what Microsoft has cooking up.

Wow. I'm amazed that you felt that strongly in a negative way towards the movie. I went in to it expecting disappointment. But, with Peter Cullen being the voice of Optimus, a nod to the VW Beetle, several occureneces of the transforming noise from the cartoon, and Optimus' fameous line..."One shall stand, one shall fall." From the original cartoon movie; i was impressed. Being a big childhood fan of Transformers as well, i liked the movie.

Although, those are pretty bold statements from a director and i wouldn't be suprised to see a mild retraction coming soon from the Michael Bay camp. He needs to stay behind the camera.

- Wow, amazing deal then, another one (to replace the one I've just sold) as a PC ROM drive at that price would be very nice (although the drive itself can be gotten as a new bare drive on ebay for under £50 now, but obviously no other deals apply).

Hopefully they'll be coming down in price here in the UK & still in time for the movie deal to be taken up (the deal here in the UK runs until 31st Jan 2008).

Yea I'm still waiting on mine from when I purchased my Toshiba HD-A3. That's when BestBuy had the player for $100 off plus, 10 movies total for free! To bad it takes nearly three and a half months to get your damn movies but hey, it's free so I guess I can't complain that much.

it did exaclty what it was meant to do. Offend.
This guy doesn't care, he only said that just to start a flame war...it's way to obvious. The movie was a great way to introduce the Transformers to to the big screen, and to a new generation. Anyone that thinks it "ruined their childhood" was obviously NOT honestly a transformer fan in their childhood. Everything real fans remember are there And he knows that, hence why he said that to get people talking.

Sorry guys as much as the nostalgia got me the 2nd time I watched it it became dawsomefomers.... 120% bad teen drama...

216.12.2007 14:59

80% yes 80% of the human story liens where bad the only thing that was not was the army bits until they defeated scorpinocks then army/gov story's started to suck IQ points, the rest of the human arks were worse...the desepticons got bit parts no dialog outside a few lines....

the autobots were the best part and they were treated as bit charatcers to the damn fleshys....

It makes the Japanase based raped dubs look good as far as dialog/charatcers go..... ><

I agree that the nods to the series where there and I appreciated them. The GM licensing was cool, as was the Mustang vs. Camaro race. I like the old Rally Sport and Concept Car versions as well. Too hell with the Beetle! ;-)

Zippy, as with any comic book, video game or cartoon inspired movie with multiple characters, something has to take a backseat, albeit dropping a character or leaving dialog to a minimum to build other story elements. You can effectively establish only so many characters, such as a hero, villain, love interest and maybe a friend or two. Happened in bunch of movies... Spider-Man, X-Men, Transformers, Batman (no Robin until later, should've stayed that way!)

Transformers had so much going on, they didn't establish the main villain at all IMHO. Still not bad, but I felt they rushed it a la Venom in Spidey 3.

Sorry I don't buy that what they do is remake it to sell it to youth that could care less abotu it being good or not, blade/catwoman is a travesty, Spider man 1 was not to bad 2 less so 3 and Ghost rider a fcking joke,Xmen is not as bad as they chose the craptactlair ultimate line where they took everything good and remade it into sewage,so that the 2nd and 3rd films were bad to worse ,I am sorry look at batman 1-2 even the punisher or even hellboy when you go and rape the IP and repackage it it shows if you merely try and convert it to film minus the repacking and rapage it can acaulty work.

I can handle the new designs and crap but they simply gave the stupid humans way to much time with unnecessary scripts that could have been better used to give most of the despcticons screen time.

As a movie its better than emo spidy 3 thats a near complete loss(sandman saved it from being a complete wreck.... hell it reminds me of Batman 4 almost),Beowulf is alil better more action less talking less things to choke on....

I simply will not put with with repackaged for target demographics BS ,they can make a smart enjoyable movie that dosent rape your brain with stupidity!

Clearly there's been a typo here.

Michael Bay talks out about HD DVD and Microsoft

The words - "of his ar$e" - were obviously accidentally left out between the words "out" and "about" as well as ",again" at the very end of the headline.

I think that guy that said the Transformers movie was bad really wasnt watching. I am a diehard Transformers fan. I thought they could have shown the evolution of the characters some how but the way they did it was fine. In movies like this with so many characters its hard to establish any levels of who each character really is without making it a Tv series. With regular shows you can take your time and feature different characters and build a show around that. A movie you cant because its only 2 hours stretched into months or years of movie times. I just hope the sequel is at least equal or better then this one.

For once I wasn't trolling.

Transformers would have been much better with a slightly better story line, and a real director.
And yea, I am old enough to have seen the original animated series as well as the movie back in the day. I actually own transformers from when most of their moving parts and bodies were made from metal.

For me the last great TF stuff was beast wars, the orignail is a bit dated but still neat stuff but beast wars was/is awesome it was not made into pablum for the toothless masses, beast machines however was...and I can't find much good to say abotu R.I.D,Energon and the Japanese ports since it, I am a a fan of classic and of animation/anime and any good film, Transformers 07 while not a complete waste is still....pretty cruddy.... its half of the marvel sht either bearable or a waste....

i think the movie was awesome, i'm not old enough so i canot say old stuff better than the new stuff or viceversa.I just saw Beast wars on HBo when i was a kid, wich is not related i think. But i'd say it's great that transfomers is still on the screen and making everybody happy. I think there will be transfomers 2 thought since they made a lot of money why not more money?? Comments are just ...

About the Format war i think MS it's no longer the nice company that used to care for the customer. They take for granted our money, they release a new OS cuz they know we'll upgrade. (Xp User)
Well i say no i think Ms it's bulling some studios to use their format when everybody knows that BD is the way to go.

Come on ppl is that really hard to get, would u like to work 30$ an hour or 50$ with extras? it's that simple BD is way better than hd-dvd.

Microsoft deal with it u lose. It seems thay have a temper against other companies.

Ps1 -> let's make Xbox

I think Sony should be the only company to sell products.Microsoft,Apple,Toshiba,Matsushita,Samsung,IBM...practicaly every company in the world should just bend over for Sony.
I like proprietry formats like UMD and Memory Stick because like Blu-Ray they take away all the confusion of choice to make your purchasing simple and easy. It's the same reason I like valium, everything in the world seems wonderful and....erm... please...please....please...

When somebody makes a remark about how how Product X is better than Product Y back up your belief with cold hard facts.

There are always arguments, and pros and cons, for and against anything. Would I rather make $30 or $50 is not a really good argument and is not realy a comparision of the two formats.

Stating WHAT that extra 20GB of available storage gets me on a movie is much stronger (better rez? higher audio quality? more adverts? more room for extras that most people don't care about?). Stating how the DRM on BD is more consumer friendly than the DRM on HD-DVD would be a good argument.

Now obviously for PC data storage the increaed space IS an argument. For the potential of increased data storage leading to higher quality graphics in games is a good argument (a fact yet to be seen me thinks but the future is not now and given the ability WOULD Game Devs make real world graphics if they had the space to do so). BUT in the realm of MOVIES please back up your pro BD or pro HD-DVD stance by citing reasons WHY one format is better than the other... and the number of studios backing each, number of movies released on each one is not what I am looking for here--obvioulsy if one format goes the way of betamax then ALL studios will release in the one left standing and all movies now only available in the losing format will be made instantly available in the winning one.

WHY should Format X be the adopted format as opposed to Format Y?

I do not support one format over the other one. But as far as I have seen a movie on BD does not provide me anything above and beyond the HD-DVD movie except for more crap that I do not care about. In fairness I also do not care about the extra crap I have seen on HD-DVD. Yes some people like the extra stuff... but nobody buys a movie for the director voice overs, the PIP showing how the scene looked before and after it was edited for effects, lighting etc. People buy for the movie itself. And so far I have not seen WHY or HOW one format presents a better movie than the other one.

Enlighten me...

- Blu-ray no longer holds a single practical technical advantage over HD DVD.

It's true that BD has a slightly larger 'per layer' gb capacity - but this has been matched by HD DVD now offering triple layer 51gb discs which handily beat Blu-ray's practical total disc limit of 47gbs
(if they go over that & try to get closer to their 50gb theoretical limit their fail rates go through the roof)

and (possibly)

a higher raw bitrate.

But we don't know on that last one cos the 51gb specs have yet to be made public.
If HD DVD kept the 1.5x spin speed that was in the original HD DVD 45gb TL spec (and why wouldn't they?) then once again HD DVD will hold the high spec.

Not that raw bitrates or gbs per layer mean the slightest thing to the mass-market or matter outside of the fevered minds of the most geeky fanboys.

They always love to pretend that Blu-ray offers it's max ultimate best in every instance.
Not true.

They can be relied upon to fail to mention that the majority of Blu-ray movie disc output (that means over 50% of one type and less than 50% of the other type - some odd types around here have claimed that means 'only a few' of one type and, by implication almost all of the other) is on 25gb single layer discs, not the 50gb dual layered.

see - www.blu-raystats.com

All the average paying punter will care about is quality v price and by that score HD DVD has it all covered very well.

....and to return to topic Bay doesn't know what he's talking about (which is nothing new to him, even by his own admission and on this very topic)

Read what?

Another blog that can't accept Paramount's decision
(even tho Paramount produced Blu-ray for a year and ought to know a hell of a lot more about it)?

But way to swerve the point here.

Blu-ray no longer holds a single practical technical advantage over HD DVD.

the end.

However for anime subbing the game changes, they could easily offer hard sub'd openings and translation/culture notes, hell even offer 5 eps of normal dub/sub and 5 eps of better fonts and translations in a hard sub format.

Mmmmmmmm I suppose better on the fly subing and stylized fonts is even beyond the next gen formats.....like the cheap dubbers will do anythign other than the normal loco-lized anal carnage....

hmm bay makes alot of sense to me. i think everybody is has too much tunnel vision about the whole matter

I was under the impression that Bay was always on board for TF2. This article from Nov. 10 (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1188000-transformers_2/news/1686915/) gave me that impression.

Why are people so arrogant. this makes me mad to think somebody
that can make a movie of one of the best cartoons in the world. screw it up and then have a enough nerve to complain about something he should have no concern over. Mr.Bay grow up.

also to the Sony fanboy that thinks only Sony should exist.
Fact is Sony is nothing more than a Thief. using old tech idea's to get around patent's want an example Mini-cd Mini-dvd slap them in a plastic container put a metal ring in the center what do you get

A UMD or get this a Universal Mini-Disc Oh My.need more prof The SD card. tweak the speed by about 5 megs more and increase the cash to amout 3x as much as an SD card. what do you get A XD card more referd to as the Pro Stick Duo.

Microsoft is the same, but you would not live in the world we leave in to day if it wasnt for these Rip off company's.

iv said enough.

MicroSoft really have their heads up in a deep dark area located between the legs. Just think how many people in the US that do not have access to high speed broadband internet. I myself have no choice but use Hughes Satellite. Last year I upgraded to small biz plan for $100 a month and it work ok for a while. Speeds slowed down to a crawl and they said to bad. I went back to the home package for $60 a month and it's a tad better than land line. But forget about video downloads, even if I had kept the small biz package.

I was on nazi net er Hughes net for a year I paid for 140$ a month or home pro, my speeds were great however they limited me heavily to about 400MB every 10-20 hours and then 5.0 dial up speed after that, still own them 600-900 and they can suck on it they cheated me on hardware deals I paid 500-700 for it plus 140 a month, now theres were regulation could be put to use not in the cable business that only create monopolies.

@ DXR88

I was joking when I said Sony should be the only company to literally rule the world.
Nevermind,I shall use '/sarcasm' to end my post just in case you miss the next time ;)

@hughjars: Thanks for the comparison input. It sounds like I was pretty much correct in my thinking about the two formats. Either way I guess I will still need both formats as of now because I choose movies based on what I like, not which studio puts them out.

At the end of the day one format will win regardless. I do not see a problem in digital downloads if its DRM free and the user can choose what to do with the digital downloaded files.
