Wal-Mart starts Wii promotion Wal-Mart has announced it has started a new Nintendo Wii promotion, offering a $50 giftcard with any purchase of the $199 console.
The deal starts on Saturday and lasts until December 12th, or while supplies last.

Additionally, the retail chain will be offering up to 20 percent off "top 2009 videogames" including Halo:ODST and the new Tekken 6.

“Even in these economic times, we see how important it is for Santa, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends to be able to give the perfect gift,”
says Wal-Mart. “We also know that a lot of wish lists today—for all ages—include a range of videogames. Well, this weekend we’re planning to make a little ‘Wii History’ … so to speak.”

People come back to walmart with that $50 gift card and go grocery shopping with it. Maybe they discover that walmart might have better prices or more food items than the grocery store they currently go to. It's a gamble to offer those $50 gift cards, but if they can gain any lifetime grocery shoppers it'll be worth it.

Plus walmart has so many people shopping there. They just rake in the money. There's always something in the checkout line buying something no matter what time of day it is. 4am? Still people buying stuff. It's crazy the kind of money that place must be making.

And yeah, I know you meant you think the wii isn't even worth $150. Well if I gave you $150 today could you make a new wii with it?

If you mean, "Could you buy the parts and solder them together and have a custom case cast?" then no...I couldn't do it for $500...prototyping is very expensive. I also could not build a Virtual Boy for $150...but I don't think it is worth the money either.

However, for just $100, I could get a brand new PS2 with better game selection, better game quality, and better game prices (plus I think the controler is much better). Considering that the Wii has absolutely no HD supprt, the only thing it has to offer is gaming...and it can't do that as well as the old PS2. With this in mind, the wII is worth less than $100...at least in terms of value.

So Nintendo doesn't rely on games as console pushers. They rely on Walmart :P

You are half right; they don't rely on games to sell the console; they rely on low prices and ignorance. The only company that makes profit on it's consoles...because they know they are not going to sell a lot of games.

Watch GameStop's stock prices.
We dropped about 9% so far because of what Walmart is doing.
Give it a week and buy up stock while it's cheap.
With GameStop's customer rewards program on the horizon, I would expect shares to increase in value mid- next year.

Gonna do it. If I get anything for the kids this winter, it will be a Wii. Already upgraded my bedroom 26" tv to a 32" and will pass the 26" on to the kids for the Wii....because there is no way I am going to let a 6.5 year old and 5 year old swing anything with force in front of my 46" plasma. Called my local Wally World Supercenter and the promotion starts tomorrow at 8am. Wish me luck. I haven't stood in line for anything like this in probably 15 years.

Since it's only a week old, just return it to the store you bought it from for a full refund. I did that after 2 weeks of owning a Wii 2 years ago. I had purchased it from Target. That might be a good option if it's worth the $50 to you.

Did it. For $150 I got the Wii with the sports game and a wireless controller with nunchuck. I used the other $50 to get 2 wired regular controllers. The wireless controllers and nunchuck were out of stock. Spent another $50 on Amazon for both of those.

So $250 for the system, 2 full controller setups (wireless controllers with the wired add-on), and a starter game for the kids. Not bad. I just hooked it up for them on my older 26" LCD (1080i max). Adjusted it to 16:9. Still looks like crap. How expensive is it for them to include at least an S-Video cable with the standard composite? I'm so disappointed in Nintendo. I don;t care how much fun it is if it looks like garbage. Just gotta keep thinking to myself that it's for the kids. I know they'll flip over it. Definitely going to get them the Mario Kart game. It comes with a wheel for $44. That's not bad at all. My brother dropped off his old Gamecube and games, so we have 2 extra controllers.

I swear, this thing feels more like a toy since I last had it 2 years ago. Maybe because I've been using a PS3 all this time.

EDIT - Just bought the Wii component cable for $2. Got plenty of good reviews for improving the picture quality at 480p

Is this only in the united states or is it also going on in Canada?

OMFG....if pretty pictures is all it takes to impress you people then what the rest of the world thinks is correct, America is populated by Muppets. No wonder Sony and Microsoft have you all on their d*ck.

It isn't JUST pretty pictures, but it does help. It is like listening to great music...it is OK on laptop speakers, but it is much better on a good sound system or some nice headphones. Then again, I can't think of any wII games that are better than PS3/Xbox360 equivelants...so the only potentialy "great" games are exclusives like Mario and Zelda...and such francises are overused.

After messing around with it some more, I do recognize that it is a great toy. Having older kids puts it more into perspecitve for me than 2 years ago when I returned it for a refund. For what it is, it's done well. It just has no replay value for me, besides the tennis and baseball games with my kids. I watched a bunch of youtube videos on Mario Galaxy and other Mario games, and I agree with KillerBug....the franchise is just overused for me. Just tons of more of the same. But I can't speak for those new to the franchise. I'll definitely enjoy the franchise through my kids eyes as they play for the first time. I'll also have fun watching my wife exercise with wii fit ;)

Sony and MS both gave me what I was looking for in terms of growth and new tech, but with the exception of a handful of games, both are guilty of delivering suberb graphics with little substance.
