Foxconn factory workers get second raise

Foxconn factory workers get second raise Last week we reported that Foxconn was raising worker salaries 30 percent amidst a flood of worker suicides at their Chinese factory.
The company, probably best known for manufacturing the Apple iPhone among tons of other electronics we use daily, has been massively criticized for its working conditions, and low wages.

Today, Foxconn has announced that they will be raising worker wages, a second time.

On top of the basic salary hike of 30 percent, workers can conditionally make 70 percent beginning in October.

"While overtime work was always voluntary, this wage increase will reduce overtime work as a personal necessity," says Foxconn.

Until last week, workers had been making Ұ900 ($132) per month. Now, workers can make up to Ұ2000 ($293) per month if they pass a 3-month performance test.

I dont see whats wrong with a performance tests.most work places make you pass a medical or some form of testing before you can get a job to make sure you can do the job.some even make you do a yearly test. Some jobs even had 3monthly drug tests or random on the spot drug tests.

the people in question already have/had the jobs so why the performance test now, 1)its an elite selection some people to better on the line than most gets the 30% increase. 2) a classic media fallout maneuver if there ever was one.

its like bonus's after a performance review, and who cares if they are doing it just after the media hits, atleast they are doing it.

yeah but you shouldn't need the media to be involved to be humane. after this all blows over i'm sure they'll go back to treating there workers like dogs.

Since when were they treating anyone as good as a dog? They are still working 16 hours a day, 7 days a week just to make $10 a day...assuming they pass a test that is designed to make everyone fail.

Plus, they completely ignored the social issues leading to suicide...let us remember that their first attempt to fix the problem was to install nets below the windows in case someone jumped...they don't care about the problem; only the symptom.

These raises occur every year for the Christmas rush and is not something new although I have read it was 50% in years prior so I guess they are getting a little more this year.
