South Korea to create own smartphone OS

South Korea is set to create its own alternative to Android and iOS, building a new smartphone OS for hometown champs LG and Samsung.

The country will allegedly begin developing the project by the end of the year.

Says Kim Jae-hong, deputy minister at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy:

We will forge ahead in developing a new kind of operating system, which is being seen as a next-generation product, in order to build the kind of advantage we do not enjoy in the market for smartphones and tablet PCs, which is dominated by Google and Apple.

Jae-hong confirmed that Google's move to purchase Motorola was the catalyst for the new OS, as LG and Samsung are afraid Google may eventually enter the hardware business and cannibalize everyone else.

The new OS will be open, and accessible by the general community.

With more competition in terms of mobile OS', this probably will happen... (Although hopefully HTC keeps in the mix, I <3 HTC :])

Whole country is making an OS or a certain company from South Korea? Cause
as far as I know Samsung already has Bada OS of their own which is very much capable and neck-to-neck with iOS and Android (except the availability of Apps). May be it's LG..this news is weird.

It sounds like a huge fail, even if it were 100% open (and it won't be), it would have to battle both Android and iOS...not just the multi-generation-evolved operating systems, but also the app collections and the loyal userbases. Haven't they learned anything from the failure of WebOS and Bada?

Samsung phones shit all over the other companies phones though.

Even Google's Nexus S is made by Samsung, as the HTC phone got smashed by the Galaxy phones.
