This freeware removal tool from Symantec is used to remove the W32.Virut file infecter from a Windows computer.
Virut is a very serious infection. It infects executable files, including files essential to Windows such as Explorer.exe. For this tool to run successfully, it has to be run in Safe Mode.
To boot into Windows in Safe Mode, keep tapping the F8 key while booting (particularly after you have seen the BIOS/POST screens and before the Windows logo usually appears) and choose Safe Mode from the list of options.
It is not uncommon for Explorer.exe to crash while you are trying to boot into a windows machine infected with something as bad as a Virut variant. If Explorer crashes, close the Error Report window and hit CTRL, ALT and DEL together. This will bring up Task Manager.
In Task Manager, click File --> New Task. You can now browse the computer for the Virut removal tool and run it. You can even browse removal media such as a USB key about a half-minute after inserting it into your computer. If you are having trouble browsing for it, you can always just type "CMD" into the New Task field and run it from the command prompt instead.
Once the tool has run through once, reboot your computer and run it again to ensure the infection is gone. It is recommended to disable System Restore for best results. Run an anti-virus scan with updated definitions as soon as this infection is cleared.
