AOL

Time to look back at the tech news from July, 1999 when Winamp and Sonique were fighting for the MP3 player dominance.

Verizon Communications has announced today the purchase of AOL for $4.4 billion as the company looks to expand its advertising and mobile video services.

According to sources, Verizon has had discussions with AOL with massive telecom looking to either acquire the smaller Internet company or join up in order to expand their mobile-video library.

Microsoft and AOL have announced a new pact in which the software giant will distribute many of AOL's videos via some of their Web properties.

AOL, which announced last month to significant outcry that media player Winamp and its companion Shoutcast radio service would be shutting down forever, appears to have saved the companies.

Despite rumors that Microsoft may come to save the day, one fan took matters into his own hands, starting a petition on Change.org the day of the announcement begging AOL to make the software open-source rather than shutting it down for good.
