Nvidia continues to take more share in discrete GPU market

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 31 May 2015 12:41

Nvidia continues to take more share in discrete GPU market According to Jon Peddie Research (JPR), Nvidia continues to take share in the graphics add-in-board (AIB) market, which now has very little competition left.

The report takes into account all AIB boards that carry discrete graphics chips and private RAM including those used in PCs, servers, workstations, and scientific instruments. The report also includes factory installed chips and those sold directly to customers.

Nvidia, thanks to their high-end GeForce GPUs, remains the market leader and continues to take share. There are actually only four GPU suppliers left: Nvidia, AMD, Matrox and S3, although Matrox and S3 only had max 0.10 percent share over the last year, combined, making them rather irrelevant.

AMD and Nvidia have 48 OEM partners, and a dozen PC OEMs offer the GPUs as part of their systems or as an additional option when building the computers.

For the Q1, Nvidia rose their share to 77.5 percent, while AMD struggles along at 22.5 percent.

New Xbox One controllers to include headphone jack?

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 31 May 2015 12:14

New Xbox One controllers to include headphone jack? Thanks to Microsoft's own Xbox One support page, we now know that the company is planning to release updated Xbox One controllers that include a standard headphone jack.

The page has since been updated, but it used to read that the refreshed controller will launch at E3, and that the headphone port will be "only available on controllers released after June 2015."

Other than the much-awaited feature, the controller looks to be exactly the same as current models. The headphone jack will be located near the bottom of the controller, as reflected by #16 in the image.

The update should be a welcome relief to gamers who may own expensive headphones but had no way to connect them without Microsoft's stereo headset adapter.

Google reveals Android M and its core features

Written by Matti Robinson @ 30 May 2015 11:21

Google reveals Android M and its core features Google officially unveiled the operating system update that is currently known as Android M at Google I/O. Even though it doesn't have a full name or a version number yet Google did give specifics about the features.

Android M will be an update that focuses largely on quality, speed, and user experience rather than new functionality. There are however new features but they might not sound flashy to the end user.

Firstly Android M will bring a revamped app permission system. In the new version the permissions are not asked as the user installs the software but instead when they are used. This makes installing apps faster and permission requests more relevant.

Custom Chrome Tabs allows apps to use Chrome browser in a cleaner way. The user will get the app's user interface even in websites that the app opens with Chrome. It's a customized web view that includes all the functionality of Chrome.

One of the most important technological advances in the works is mobile payment. Google has addressed this before with Google Wallet but has now introduced a new feature called Google Pay. In addition to support for fingerprint sensors across Android devices this feature is ready to challenge iPhone and Apple Pay.

Google Maps to finally be offline friendly

Google Maps to finally be offline friendly If there's anything that Google had to do with their maps it was adding proper offline support for mobile. And that is exactly what they've done at this year's Google I/O. There is a catch though.

Google announced that Maps app is becoming offline friendly with not only the map pictures but also navigation with voice assistance. The app currently only allows to download small areas for offline use and there is no navigation.

The company didn't reveal how the roll out will be happening but it did refer to developing countries a lot which might mean that in the US and Europe the feature might not appear immediately.

In addition to maps the YouTube app will feature offline mode as well. The videos can be downloaded for 48 hours after which they delete themselves. Good news to travelers.

Bug in iMessage freezes the device

Written by Matti Robinson @ 30 May 2015 11:02

Bug in iMessage freezes the device A bug has been found in iOS that allows a certain message to crash your iPhone or iPad. The bug in the messaging app or notifications makes the device freeze when receiving specific Arabic text string in iMessage.

The string shown in the picture crashes the device in such a way that it is unusable until fixed. Luckily there is a simple fix: send another message to the device. You can do this with Siri or from another device.

Since Apple has also acknowledged that the bug exists and suggests using Siri to answer the message. This also unfreezes the device. Apple also recommends to remove the entire conversation.

It seems that the bug is in parsing of the Arabic language or specific text format. Apple has promised a fix to the issue in the next software update. Until then you have to rely on these workarounds.

Court tells woman to remove BitTorrent, P2P software An accused Dallas Buyers Club pirate has been told to remove P2P and BitTorrent software in order to avoid a $7,500 fine.

The woman was accused of downloading Dallas Buyers Club illegally using BitTorrent software, along with many thousands of other people targeted who have paid settlements of typically around $3,500.

In an interesting exception in an Oregon court is worth noting, however. A woman was essentially spared having to pay $7,500 in damages to the makers of Dallas Buyers Club as long as she promised not to pirate movies again in the future. She was offered this option due "extenuating circumstances" and "financial hardship."

The judgment was dug up by TorrentFreak.

Twitter brings Periscope live streaming app to Android

Written by James Delahunty @ 26 May 2015 10:56

Twitter brings Periscope live streaming app to Android Twitter's live streaming app Periscope is now available to download for compatible devices from Google Play after previously being available only on iOS.

Twitter bought Periscope earlier this year at a reported cost of $100 million, before relaunching the app for iOS on the App Store. It allows users to livestream to the public or to select users, and lets viewers interact with the broadcaster by sending them love (hearts) by tapping on their mobile screens.

Now Android users can get in on the fun, but only if your device is running Android 4.4 KitKat or newer.

The app is mostly the same as the iOS variant but there are a few noteable differences. For example, if a viewer is distracted by a phone call they have to take, then an alert will be put on the Android home screen after the call ends. Tapping the alert will return the viewer to the broadcast immediately.

It also reportedly gives more control over app notifications than the iOS variant.

Periscope has already been the subject of controversy as some users breached its terms and conditions by rebroadcasting HBO's Game of Thrones, and even the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Junior boxing event earlier this month.

Cortana on Android and iPhone will be capable of much of the same things as on Windows Phone, including having Cortana remind you to do something, to provide notifications of sports scores, track flight information, and so on. However, because Cortana won't have the same OS-level access on iOS and Android, it won't be able to launch apps on command, and the user won't be able to invoke Cortana hands-free by saying "Hey Cortana".

Changes you make on one device will be reflected when you use Cortana on any device, including iOS and Android.

Microsoft will also soon make the new Phone Companion app available on the Windows 10 Preview. It will help to sync your Windows, iOS or Android phone with your Windows 10 PC.

We can also expect the updated Xbox Music app for Android and iPhone in June or July, which will enable streaming your music files from your OneDrive account.

Pirate Bay co-founder to appeal Swedish domain seizure

Written by James Delahunty @ 25 May 2015 10:50

Pirate Bay co-founder to appeal Swedish domain seizure An original founder of the Pirate Bay will challenge the seizure of the piratebay.se and thepiratebay.se domain names, it has been confirmed.

Fredrik Neij will appeal the Swedish court's ruling that ordered the two domain names to be seized by the Swedish government. Neij is not interested in the domain names himself though, instead he has concerns with how the court came to the decision to order the seizure.

The court had identified Fredrik Neij as the holder of the two domain names, even though they are held under a third party's name. Since Neij has been prohibited under threats of sizeable fines not to be associated with the operation of the Pirate Bay, and he is due to be released from prison soon, being identified as being the holder of the Pirate Bay domains by a court of law could complicate things.

"The prosecution has alleged two things. One is that crimes have been committed via The Pirate Bay. Fredrik Neij really has no views on this. The second is that he is involved in The Pirate Bay operation," said lawyer Jonas Nilsson.

With Neij's release on the horizon, it is in his self-interest to reject any determination by a court of law that he is in any way involved with the administration of the Pirate Bay.

The error seems to be limited to customers in Australia and New Zealand. One customer reported that he had been charged 11 times on Sunday by Netflix, before going into redraw.

Another customer in New Zealand tweeted that, "Netflix just charged me my monthly fee of $12.99 FOUR TIMES IN ONE DAY," adding that "And they're trying to charge me again but it won't let them because they've taken all the f***ing money out of my account."

"While no extra money was withdrawn from users' accounts, it may take several days for the authorisations to drop from users' bank accounts," Neflix said in a statement.

"Members may contact Netflix customer service if they have additional issues. We regret any inconvenience related to the problem."

Fake Minecraft 'scareware' apps found on Google Play

Written by James Delahunty @ 25 May 2015 6:26

Fake Minecraft 'scareware' apps found on Google Play Useless 'Minecraft' apps promising cheats and other materials on the Google Play store were actually laced with scareware warnings about non-existent viruses.

Over 600,000 Android users installed at least one of the malicious apps. The goal of the apps is to get an unsuspecting user to sign up for a premium SMS service at a cost of 4.80EUR per week.

ESET reported its discovery last week on its blog, detailing over 30 different apps that had managed to get through Google's malware filter, Bouncer. They were uploaded to the market over the past 9 months from different developer accounts, though they all likely come from the same source.

"According to public data from the Google Play store, several of them were installed between 100.000 – 500.000 times and the total number of installations of all 33 scareware applications lies between 660.000 and 2.800.000," ESET Malware Researcher, Lukas Stefanko, writes.

The apps have pretty much no functionality. Instead, any interaction with the apps just brought up warnings about dangerous virus infections. Eventually, the app would prepare a text message in the phone's default SMS application, appearing to be a code to activate an antivirus product. In reality, if the user sends it, they will sign up for a premium SMS service at a cost of 4.80 EUR per week.

Teen pleads guilty to harassing, swatting gamers

Teen pleads guilty to harassing, swatting gamers An eight-hour long "swatting" live stream on YouTube leads police to a 17 year old, later charged with extortion, criminal harassment, making false police reports and more.

The Canadian cannot be named due to his age, but reports say he identified as part of the group Lizard Squad. He was accused of harassing targets he found on League of Legends and on Twitter, usually because they wouldn't accept his friend request.

Victims had their personal information, including financial records, posted online. The worst of all offences he admitted to was swatting, in which a false report would be made to police with the goal of getting a heavily armed response unit to show up the victim's location.

In one case, a University of Arizona student dropped out after multiple cases of swatting against her and her family.

The teen was eventually tracked down by police after tips were received about an 8 hour long YouTube live stream in which he had multiple people swatted.

He faces sentencing on June 29.

Half of the sales came in the first 24 hours of availability, and since then orders have averaged under 30,000 per day.

Although demand has slowed, 30,000 daily sales means Apple could move 11 million units in its first year of sales, a strong number when the average sales price for the watch is around $400.

Unfortunately, we may not know exact sales of the Watch, even from Apple, as the company will dump the Watch sales in its "other" sales category that includes iPods and accessories like Lightning cables.

Nintendo Wii 'likely' started home fire, investigators say

Written by James Delahunty @ 24 May 2015 5:16

Nintendo Wii 'likely' started home fire, investigators say A fire that damaged an RV home and burned up much of its owners possessions earlier this week was likely started by an Nintendo Wii console, according to fire investigators in Colorado Springs.

A news report by a local NBC news channel KOAA 5 quoted the fire department as saying all other possible sources of ignition for the blaze had been ruled out. "I got a phone call from the neighbors saying my camper was on fire," Trevor Pellegrin said.

"When I opened the door, I got thrown back by thick black smoke and flames."

The roof was damaged by the flames, as well as clothes that ignited and the man's television had started to melt. The Wii console was rendered a charred ugly mess. Luckily, Pellegrin managed to save some of his personal items but lost a lot to the fire.

The Wii console was switched off, but still plugged into an electrical outlet when he left. Typically games consoles are left plugged in by owners 24/7.

On very rare occasions, home entertainment electronics are linked to fires, but it's often a case of an overloaded electrical outlet or problems with wiring.

Android reset flaw affects 500 million+ devices

Written by James Delahunty @ 24 May 2015 5:13

Android reset flaw affects 500 million+ devices The factory reset option in the Android mobile operating system may not be as reliable as you'd think, according to new research.

Using the factory reset is common when giving away / selling an old smartphone or tablet, clearing out personal information so the new owner can start afresh, and the previous owner can rest assured that all personal information is wiped.

But.. what if the data is not wiped properly? A study from Cambridge University has raised doubts about the reliability of this function across Android hardware. It focused on tests performed on 21 devices from five manufacturers, running different versions of the popular operating system.

Unfortunately, the researchers could successfully recover partial data after the factory reset was carried out. Even with Full Disk Encryption, some data recovery was still achieved.

In 80 percent of the devices, the researchers could recover the master token required to access Google services. They could also recover login information for other services, as well as images, videos, contacts and so on.

There are a variety of reasons for the problem, with one being manufacturers failing to include adequate drivers that would be needed to properly erase the internal memory, or removable flash memory of a device.

Google: Why we send piracy settlement letters to Fiber users

Written by James Delahunty @ 24 May 2015 2:21

Google: Why we send piracy settlement letters to Fiber users Google forwards anti-piracy notices and settlement demand letters to Google Fiber subscribers, even though other Internet Service Providers in the U.S. choose now to, and here's why.

The search giant claims that it sends users the information as part of its commitment to transparency. Other ISPs don't forward settlement demand notices to their subscribers, since the offences referenced are still only allegations.

Google's decision to forward these notices to subscribers of its super-fast Fiber broadband raised a few eyebrows.

"When Google Fiber receives a copyright complaint about an account, we pass along all of the information we receive to the account holder so that they're aware of it and can determine the response that's best for their situation," a Google spokesperson said, reports TorrentFreak.

The spokesperson did go on to say that Google believes there are "better options" to fighting piracy than targeting individual users.

Firms such as CEG-TEK attempt to monetize the notice systems in place in the U.S. and other regions by demanding settlements from Internet users for alleged incidents of copyright infringement. Some ISPs feel that it is better not to forward these demands to their customers.

Google: Why 'Security Questions' suck for security

Google: Why 'Security Questions' suck for security After some really interesting research results, Google is raising awareness about how unreliable "Security Questions" are for legitimate login authentication, password recovery and more.

Providers of Internet services have long asked their users to provide answers to questions about themselves which may be used for identity verification later. Typically, these questions are asked if a login is suspicious (unfamiliar location etc.) or as a layer of a password recovery process.

It turns out that this is an extremely unreliable layer of security. Hundreds of millions of secret question and answer combinations were analysed by Google, with the goal of (among other things) determining how likely it would have been for an attacker to guess the answers correctly.

Racism and the White House: What happened with Google Maps this week?

Written by James Delahunty @ 21 May 2015 11:16

Racism and the White House: What happened with Google Maps this week? Google Maps was at the center of Internet outrage this week with demands for apologies, and heads to roll, in an unfortunate set of circumstances that associated 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with racist search terms.

It emerged that searches of "n****r house" or "n****r king" in Google Maps brought up the home of Barack Obama, and Google very quickly responded with an investigation. In the meantime, the story took off and all eyes were on the Mountain View giant.

It's not as if racism is new to the Internet; let's be honest this place is full of assholes, but for it to appear as a top result in such an important Google service raised questions. How could this happen? How could Google let it happen?

Unsurprisingly, it was down to the aforementioned assholes that roam the digital plains and spread their toxicity wherever they can be seen. It's no secret that Google is constantly probing the web and using that crowdsourced pile of data to drive features of its services.

Yeah, you can already see where this is going!

In online discussions of the White House, racist slurs were used frequently enough for Google's systems to strongly associate them with the location. That crowdsourced data scoured from every corner of the web mixed with some offensive search terms in Google Maps produced a very embarrassing result for Google, and one that was offensive to a lot of people.

Google sending piracy settlement notices to Fiber subscribers? Google Fiber subscribers who have used their super-fast Internet service to download and share copyright infringing files could soon hear from the Mountain View giant.

According to TorrentFreak, Google has been sending copyright infringement notices to subscribers whose accounts have been flagged by third parties for piracy activity. Controversially, TF alleges that Google is also forwarding settlement demands from Rightscorp and CEG TEK.

Settlements are offered to Internet users ranging from $20 to $300.

Other ISPs in the United States, including Comcast and Verizon, do not forward such settlement demands to subscribers, given that the subscribers are only alleged to have committed a crime and there's typically no evidence to hold the account hold personally responsible.

Along with the demands from Rightscorp and CEG TEK, Google also warns users that repeated violations of its Terms of Services - which expressly prohibits copyright infringement - can result in remedial action including service termination.

YouTube supports 60fps live streaming in HTML5 player

Written by James Delahunty @ 21 May 2015 7:43

YouTube supports 60fps live streaming in HTML5 player Smooth! In a move aimed at Amazon's Twitch and others in the growing arena of video game streaming, YouTube now supports 60fps in 1080p.

Google's video giant previously added support for 60fps videos, which was welcomed and embraced by gamers. In HD, the difference between 30fps and 60fps is very noticeable for some fast action content. Now YouTube has added the same support for streaming game footage, using a HTML5 player in compatible browsers.

"When you start a live stream on YouTube at 60fps, we'll transcode your stream into 720p60 and 1080p60, which means silky smooth playback for gaming and other fast-action videos," YouTube's creator blog announced.

"We'll also make your stream available in 30fps on devices where high frame rate viewing is not yet available, while we work to expand support in the coming weeks."

Any app using YouTube's live streaming API can add a new high frame rate flag to enable 60fps streaming.

Additionally, the HTML5 player supports variable speed playback, enabling viewers to skip backwards and then increase the playback rate to 1.5x or 2x to catch up to live.

Twitch - which cost Amazon almost $1 billion to acquire - claims to have reached an average of 100 million viewers per month. Google was considering buying Twitch before Amazon swooped in, and now wants its YouTube platform to eat its audience instead.

'Game Changer' is a drama being made about the public and legal spats between Rockstar Games and anti-gaming (disbarred) lawyer Jack Thompson. It stars Daniel Radcliffe as Sam Houser, co-founder and President of Rockstar Games, while the role of Thompson is filled by Bill Paxton.

Rockstar Games confirmed that it has sued the BBC over the upcoming feature, citing its desire to protect its intellectual property and trademarks.

"Take-Two Interactive has filed suit against the BBC for trademark infringement based on their movie currently titled'Game Changer' as it relates to Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto video game series," the firm said in a statement, published by IGN.

"While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games. We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. 'Netflix for Pirates': More Popcorn Time blocks ordered by court

Written by James Delahunty @ 21 May 2015 6:19

'Netflix for Pirates': More Popcorn Time blocks ordered by court Controversial 'Netflix for Pirates' services under the Popcorn Time banner are facing further blocking at the hands of a court.

This time the service is being targeted in Israel, where media firms have acquired a court order mandating that Internet Service Providers block access to Popcorn Time websites. The complaint was brought to a court in Tel Aviv by ZIRA, which represents content owners in Israel and elsewhere.

Around the world, Popcorn Time is being fought by targeting the websites that host the applications. Not only are these websites devoid of any copyright infringing material, but they don't even host torrent files or even link to torrent files.

No Legitimate Use

The position of media companies objecting to this "free Netflix" app is that it has no legitimate use. Its sole purpose instead is to act as user-friendly graphical frontend for users to download movies and TV shows using BitTorrent and watch the content as it downloads.

BitTorrent clients on the other hand can be used for legitimate purposes, and so there has been no major push to attack the main websites of Vuze or uTorrent, for example.

While the price cuts would not be all too unexpected, and the documents could just be mistakes, but there is a possibility that Sony will cut later this year following the unexpected sales win by the Xbox One in April.

Huawei launches tiny LiteOS to power Internet of Things devices Major Chinese infrastructure maker Huawei is readying an operating system for Internet of Things devices that is just 10 kilobytes large.

'LiteOS' is the "lightest" software of its kind, says the company, and it will be used to power a large range of smart devices.

The company says it believe that "by 2025, a total of 100 billion connections will be generated globally and two million new sensors will be deployed every hour" but that current networks cannot support such growth.

"Huawei believes that standardizing ICT infrastructure will foster the development of Internet applications, including IoT applications. To address this, Huawei is launching our IoT OS, LiteOS," said Mr. William Xu, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at Huawei.

LiteOS will be available to all developers, meaning IoT products could launch in the future built around the tiny OS.

In speaking about the operating system, the company says "LiteOS is the world's most lightweight IoT OS. It is small in size at 10KB and supports zero configuration, auto-discovery, and auto-networking. It can be widely applied to different areas including smart homes, wearable, connected vehicles and other industries. The LiteOS helps to simplify the development of smart hardware to enhance IoT connectivity."

Microsoft commits to Kinect

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 20 May 2015 8:25

Microsoft commits to Kinect When Microsoft launched the Xbox One it included the Kinect motion control system with every console, forcing gamers to pay a $100 premium compared to the Sony PlayStation 4.

Ever since Microsoft dropped Kinect from its Xbox One as a necessary peripheral and dropped the price of the console, the company has managed to outsell its rival a number of times and that has led to a simple question: Is Microsoft dropping support for Kinect altogether?

According to Xbox head Phil Spencer, the company is not abandoning the Kinect, but the company will not focus at all on Kinect functions for gaming.

"It's not abandoned. We just developed Upload Studio 2.0, which has green screening that you can do with Kinect. We'll continue to build functionality to make it a valuable part of the ecosystem. That said, price point's really important for the console – we saw that over the holidays in the UK and US, where we did well when we dropped the price, which was great," said Spencer. "And I want to make sure consumers have choice on how much they value the functionality of Kinect when they buy a console. If you want to go buy a Kinect console [bundle], then they're still available."

Spencer continued: "[Kinect's] place will be earned through the experiences that are out there and the developers that show interest. We will continue to build functionality through voice and using the RGB and depth cameras, and we'll stay focused on that, but giving the consumers choice is pretty critical."

Rand Paul trying to block PATRIOT Act renewal

Written by James Delahunty @ 20 May 2015 5:46

Rand Paul trying to block PATRIOT Act renewal U.S. Senator Rand Paul is currently trying to block the renewal of PATRIOT Act provisions related to the mass collection of phone records in the United States.

The Republican is currently holding the U.S. Senate floor and speaking about the mass collection of telephone call records and other activities in the union. Under the rules, Paul can speak until midnight, which is when a new legislative day will commence.

Paul's twitter account and news outlets are reporting the senator's activity as a filibuster, which is not entirely accurate since he is not actually delaying consideration of a bill. Nevertheless, Paul is using his time on the floor to talk about why it's time to "end NSA spying".

On June 1, provisions of the controversial U.S. PATRIOT Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001) will expire. Those provisions are referenced to justify the mass collection of data related to phone calls inside the United States.

Piracy plummets as subscribers receive notices; U.S. to copy controversial system?

Written by James Delahunty @ 20 May 2015 5:12

Piracy plummets as subscribers receive notices; U.S. to copy controversial system? It's time for America to get rid of the Copyright Alert System and replace it with the Canadian alternative responsible for a sharp decrease in piracy, an anti-piracy group has said.

Canadian Internet users that are alleged to have infringed copyright by downloading and sharing media online have begun receiving notices forwarded from their Internet Service Providers. While there are still controversial aspects of the program, a group is calling for the system to be replicated in the United States and to replace the comparably ineffective Copyright Alert System (CAS).

The Internet Security Task Force called last week for the U.S. to adopt a system more like that of the Canadian Copyright Modernization Act, citing data that shows a sizable drop in piracy activity on Canadian ISPs.

The data come from GEK-TEK International, which is a firm based in Los Angeles. GEK-TEK monitors online piracy and its business is to extract fees/settlements from alleged Internet piracy for its clients. It's main clients are Nu Image and Millennium Film and it has around 125 clients in Canada, and no doubt it would like to expand its horizons to more content owners.

Here are the figures attributed to GEK-TEK from Canada:

  • Bell Canada - 69.6% decrease
  • Telus Communications - 54.0% decrease
  • Shaw Communications - 52.1% decrease
  • TekSavvy Solutions - 38.3% decrease
  • Rogers Cable - 14.9% decrease
ISTF wants CAS to be done away with entirely, claiming that it simply doesn't work.

Podcasts, Videos, Running Tracks... Spotify broadens content platform

Podcasts, Videos, Running Tracks... Spotify broadens content platform Spotify is broadening its content distribution platform to include support for podcasts and short videos as it stares down rapidly growing competition in the media delivery space.

It's not economically feasible to rely on the volatile music streaming business these days with so many vultures in flight. If you stagnate and stand still you will fade into irrelevancy in an unforgiving market and an every-changing, increasingly demanding digital entertainment space.

Spotify is taking no risks and is squaring up to services like Tidal by adding support for videos and podcasts to its service. It won't be offering what you'd consider "full length episodes" in video, instead subscribers will have access to short videos around 10 minutes or shorter.

With commuters in mind, audio-only streams from video content will also be supported.

Spotify will of course make suggestions of what videos or podcasts you might like, just as it does with music, and content from the likes of ABC, BBC, Comedy Central, Condé Nast Entertainment, ESPN, Fusion, Maker Studios, NBC, TED and Vice Media will be available.

Also announced today is Spotify Running (video below) for those who listen to music when they go for a run. It will match your running tempo (BPM etc.) to music specifically selected for running activity, delivering music in time with your step. Some original tracks will also be available (six at launch).

Kim Dotcom has more harsh words for Hollywood studios

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 19 May 2015 11:03

Kim Dotcom has more harsh words for Hollywood studios Kim Dotcom had some more harsh words for the big Hollywood studios, as he faces charges for copyright infringement thanks to his former ownership of Megaupload.

"If Hollywood had some smart people working for them, they would probably have the biggest Internet company on the planet,"
Kim Dotcom said in an interview. "Instead, it's companies like Apple and Netflix that steal their thunder and this opportunity to monetize the power of the Internet. They completely missed the train."

Dotcom ran Megaupload until 2012 when it was shutdown by a police raid. At the time, the site was responsible for over 25 percent of all traffic on the Internet. Dotcom has been accused of copyright infringement, wire fraud and racketeering and is facing extradition to the U.S. although it is nowhere near a guarantee that he will ever leave New Zealand.

The studios are now trying to bully Dotcom out of fear, he added: "It's like the candlestick maker that didn't like the light bulb when it came along." Dotcom says Hollywood encourages piracy by not releasing films globally at the same time but rather choosing to roll it out sometimes over months. "Because people don't get that access, they are looking for the stuff elsewhere. So it's a problem created by the content creators, I'm not responsible for that."

Dallas Buyers Club accused pirates to get free legal advice

Dallas Buyers Club accused pirates to get free legal advice An Internet Service Provider is working to get free legal advice for customers who are alleged to have downloaded illegal copies of Dallas Buyers Club.

iiNet is one of several Internet Service Providers in Australia that will have to identify account holders based on IP addresses allegedly used to pirate the film. In total, 4,726 IP addresses were allegedly connected to pirating the film, and a Federal Court has ordered their ISPs to identify the account holders linked to them.

Dallas Buyers Club LLC and Voltage Pictures brought the case to court in Australia and ISPs like iiNet resisted calls to identify their customers and provide their personal details. Once the information is handed over, the plaintiffs will be able to make contact with the alleged copyright infringers, but Federal Court Justice Nye Perram has stressed that letters seeking settlement need to be approved by the court, in order to avoid intimidation.

iiNet has provided information for customers who have downloaded Dallas Buyers Club and fear they might be among those identified and pursued for compensation. In the event that a customer receives a letter, iiNet recommends they seek legal advice immediately and makes a big commitment to its customers.

VIDEO: Bill Gates recommends books to read this summer Randall Munroe, Richard Dawkins, Eula Biss and more make up Bill Gates' summer recommended reading list!

Bill reads a handful of books every year and reviews them, making recommendations based on his favorite books. This year he has strayed away from heavier topics like macroeconomics and finance, and is focusing on lighter alternatives that will be entertaining, informative and even humorous reads.

Among his recommendations this year is the noted "What If?" by Randall Munroe, which is a thoroughly entertaining read providing scientific answers to really bizarre questions. The book is funny to read, but still scientifically accurate and the reader can learn a bit about interesting topics (DNA, Ballistics, Ocean sciences etc).

Also from Munroe, Bill recommends "XKCD", which is a collection of material from the XKCD blog.

Evolutionary Biologist Richard Dawkins also gets a nod from Gates for his book "The Magic of Reality" which is intended for a younger audience but can still be read and enjoyed by adults. Dawkins is famed for his ability for making Scientific concepts understandable and appealing to the general public, but in recent years has been known more for his stance on religion. Gates doesn't endorse Dawkins' ideas on religion fully, but still credits him as one of the greatest science writers.

Popcorn Time now works in your browser, but for how long?

Written by James Delahunty @ 19 May 2015 5:49

Popcorn Time now works in your browser, but for how long? A Popcorn Time fork that works in modern web browsers without downloading and installing an additional app has appeared online.

We really don't expect the popcorninyourbrowser.net to last very long if we are honest. Popcorn Time is a very popular torrent-based movie and TV show streaming solution that plays video content as it downloads. Since the original Popcorn Time ceased to be, there have been multiple forks of continued development.

It has captured the attention of Hollywood because it makes viewing the latest movies and TV shows, in HD, very easy using apps that work on Android, Windows and so on. It sports a very simple interface and will do all the torrenting in the background.

The new site has a responsive search that lets the user find popular films, and with a click will attempt to get the film playing. It is described only as a Mashup of YTS and Coinado.io.

Some brief testing we did showed that it does work but seems rather slow. In any case, we can't see it being online - or at least accessible at the current domain - for much longer.

YouTube's Kids app blasted for inappropriate content Two groups claiming to represent the interests of children have reported the YouTube Kids App to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) claiming it provides access to inappropriate content.

The two groups - Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and the Center for Digital Democracy - said they could use the app to find videos that were extremely disturbing and "potentially harmful for young kids to view."

Among the objectionable content, the groups cited explicit sexual language in cartoons; jokes about pedophilia and drug use; activities such as juggling knives, tasting battery acid, and making a noose; and adult discussions about family violence, pornography, and child suicide, according to a Wall Street Journal blog post.

"Google promised parents that YouTube Kids would deliver appropriate content for children, but it has failed to fulfill its promise," said attorney Aaron Mackey.

Google said it works hard to make sure that the videos that can be accessed through the app are as kids-friendly as possible. It uses automatic filters, user feedback and reviews to determine if access to content should be removed.

The video caused a surge of violence in some parts of the middle east and the western world for its portrayal of the figure Mohammed from Islam as a fool, a sexual deviant, a delinquent and so on.

Fatwas were issued against the producer of the film, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, and against the cast. What the cast didn't know is dialogue had been dubbed over the film in post-production to add anti-Islamic sentiment.

YouTube voluntarily blocked access to the video in some countries, citing a difficult situation, but it did not remove it in the United States or most of the western world. Google did not find the content of the video in violation to its rules, finding it was about Islam and did not qualify as hate speech against a particular ethnic group.

However, actress Cindy Lee Garcia claimed to have been tricked by the producers of the film and filed a lawsuit against Google seeking to have the footage removed. Garcia had received death threats for her part in the production of the film beforehand, but was relying on a weak copyright claim in order to have the film removed from YouTube, and a district court refused her request.

Ransomware leads to 'animal abuse images' confession

Written by James Delahunty @ 19 May 2015 4:13

Ransomware leads to 'animal abuse images' confession A man turned himself in to police in the UK to confess to possessing sexual images involving animals after being threatened by ransomware on his PC.

The 61-year old living in Scotland had encountered a run-of-the-mill ransomware infection on his Windows PC in 2013. Unlike more advanced ransomware that uses cryptography to wall off access to files on infected PCs until a ransom is paid, this infection just locked the screen and threw up a phony warning from police.

Such ransomware infections often claim to have detected illegal browsing activity, illegal files such as pornography or copyright infringing content, and threatens to forward the information to authorities unless a ransom is paid. Some even use location information on the PC to pick the relevant police force based on the territory the victim resides in.

In this case, the man in question reportedly paid £100 in ransom to regain access to his files, which actually were never encrypted at all. To his dismay, the access was not restored and fearing he was about to be arrested, he turned himself in to police.

He admitted to possessing hundreds of images of animals of a sexual nature, including horses, dogs and pigs, although he maintained that he never actually looked at them after downloading them.

Pirate Bay domain seizure ordered by Swedish court

Pirate Bay domain seizure ordered by Swedish court Notorious Pirate ship sets sail for new shores after a Swedish court ordered the seizure of both thepiratebay.se and piratebay.se domain names.

Once again the Pirate Bay has been forced into evasive maneuvers to thwart legal efforts to sink it to the bottom of the ocean. This time, the Stockholm District Court ordered the official thepiratebay.se and piratebay.se domain names seized, continuing a cat and mouse game that has been going on for over a decade between the Pirate Bay and... everyone.

In response, the Pirate Bay now has SIX new domain names ending in .GS, .LA, .VG,. AM, .MN and .GD. The new logo on the evasive torrent site features a Lernaean Hydra - a mythical monster from Greek mythology that sports multiple heads - and the new domain names.

Humble as always, the Pirate Bay team congratulated the prosecutor for wasting time and money on this latest effort to slay the beast.

"Congratulations to Prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad. Two years hard work to get us to change two little letters at a cost of $20,000 per letter," TorrentFreak quotes TPB team.

Court hands down mixed ruling in Apple, Samsung patent case appeal

Court hands down mixed ruling in Apple, Samsung patent case appeal In 2013, a jury ruled in favor of Apple in a blockbuster patent and intellectual property fight with Samsung, awarding the Cupertino giant $930 million in damages.

A new ruling by the U.S. appeals court has threatened parts of that verdict, meaning nearly 40 percent of the damages award will now be reconsidered.

The patent infringement verdict was upheld but a separate trademark verdict was thrown out. The trademark verdict had found that the iPhone's external appearance could be protected and was the most controversial ruling of the trial.

$382 million that was awarded for trade dress dilution will now be reconsidered. Apple was never able to gain an injunction on the offending smartphones, all of which are now years old and no longer available.

LG G4 begins global rollout

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 18 May 2015 7:29

LG G4 begins global rollout LG's latest flagship, the G4, has begun rolling out across the globe following its early launch in Korea.

The company says the device will launch in Hong Kong first, followed by Turkey, Russia and Singapore. Afterwards, the smartphone is headed to "most of Europe, North America, CIS, Southeast Asia, Middle East/Africa and South/Central America" over the course of the next month.

LG's latest has a large 5.5-inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel (QHD) display with better color reproduction, adds a bit of a curve (to help avoid shattering the screen if you drop it), is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (microSD expandable), a 3,000mAh removable battery (no QuickCharging or wireless charging available however) and Android 5.1 with LG's own custom UI on top.

Notably, LG says its GPS nav and location services are "twice as accurate" as any other phone and the company has removed lots of bloat, so the devices will seem almost like stock. The company is also adding 100GB of free Google Drive storage for 24 months, at least for the U.S. model.

'New' Grooveshark already sued and taken down by record labels

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 17 May 2015 3:46

'New' Grooveshark already sued and taken down by record labels Earlier this month, streaming music service Grooveshark shut down and settled for millions of dollars with the major record labels.

The record labels took over control of the Grooveshark name, its patents and copyrights, and the existing database was completely wiped.

Just days after the site was shutdown, however, someone revived the brand with multiple domains, offering up a basic music search engine to find copyright music. Going by the name 'Shark' the new admin claimed that Grooveshark would rise again.

The record labels did not agree and quickly sued the new site over trademark infringement, copyright infringement, cybersquatting and counterfeiting. A District Judge was quick to rule in favor of the labels, issuing a restraining order. Additionally, domain registrar NameCheap was ordered to seize grooveshark.io and any other domains.

Within a day, the operator brought the site back at grooveshark.vc but that domain has since been seized, as well.

Netflix looks to break into China

Netflix looks to break into China According to new reports, Netflix is in talks with Wasu Media Holding, the Chinese company backed by Alibaba's Jack Ma, looking to partner up in the nation of 1.4 billion people.

China's online video market is growing exponentially and is now valued at $5.9 billion.

Netflix plans "to be nearly global by the end of 2016," although they did not specifically confirm China as part of the plans.

A local partnership is necessary in the nation, where the government censors and controls online and TV content. Wasu has licenses to play content on mobile devices, PCs and set-top boxes, one of just 7 companies in the nation to have those.

"China is too big to have an asterisk next to it," Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said Friday in response to the reports. "There are a lot of operating constraints in China that are different to anywhere else. We don't have any operating partners anywhere else in the world, so that would be a new skill for us too."

The Chinese online video market is expected to grow to $12.9 billion by 2018.

The Oculus Rift has powerful minimum required specs

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 17 May 2015 11:33

The Oculus Rift has powerful minimum required specs Oculus VR has posted the minimum specs required to use the upcoming Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, specs that will guarantee a "better player experience of comfortable sustained presence."

The company does say the recommended specs configuration will hold for the lifetime of the headset meaning you won't have to keep updating your PC as each new generation of the Rift is launched.

Reads the statement: "Today, that system's specification is largely driven by the requirements of VR graphics. To start with, VR lets you see graphics like never before. Good stereo VR with positional tracking directly drives your perceptual system in a way that a flat monitor can't. As a consequence, rendering techniques and quality matter more than ever before, as things that are imperceivable on a traditional monitor suddenly make all the difference when experienced in VR. Therefore, VR increases the value of GPU performance.

At the same time, there are three key VR graphics challenges to note: raw rendering costs, real-time performance, and latency.

On the raw rendering costs: a traditional 1080p game at 60Hz requires 124 million shaded pixels per second. In contrast, the Rift runs at 2160×1200 at 90Hz split over dual displays, consuming 233 million pixels per second. At the default eye-target scale, the Rift's rendering requirements go much higher: around 400 million shaded pixels per second. This means that by raw rendering costs alone, a VR game will require approximately 3x the GPU power of 1080p rendering."

Microsoft will provide Windows 10 updates for phones so you're not waiting on carriers Microsoft has taken the reins in regards to future Windows Phone updates, promising that carriers will no longer be a hindrance in getting the latest update for your operating system.

Starting with the launch of Windows 10 Mobile later this year, all personal and business devices running the OS will get updates directly through Microsoft, meaning you won't have to wait weeks (or even months or years) for your carrier to approve and manipulate the update before it gets to you.

Says the company: "Here at Microsoft, we take our responsibility to keep Windows secure seriously. We ... proactively update supported devices with necessary updates to address issues. And today, we're announcing this continuous update process applies to all Windows 10 devices, including phones."

The carriers will not be left out completely, of course, as they will be part of the Insider group of testers that have input in new builds before Microsoft rolls them out.

Apple has operated their updates this way for years, which keeps fragmentation to a minimum. Android has been dogged by huge fragmentation issues since its launch, with nearly 25 percent of users still running versions of Android released in 2012 or earlier.

Alleged pirates sued after ignoring hundreds of ISP copyright notices

Alleged pirates sued after ignoring hundreds of ISP copyright notices For a couple of alleged pirates, ignoring those ISP copyright notices could be potentially disastrous.

According to the suit, both of the alleged pirates shared the albums via the BitTorrent P2P network. Rightscorp was able to connect to their IP addresses and download the albums, later verifying that the downloaded copies were identical to the original and copywritten work.

Now, it is important to note that Rightscorp didn't just send one warning notice via Comcast demanding for the defendants to stop sharing. For the Acid Bath album, the pirate received 11 separate notices. For the D.R.I. album, the pirate received a shocking 288 notices between December 14, 2014 and May 12, 2015.

The lawsuit is seeking an injunction on further online infringement and of course, the deletion of the stolen works. In addition, Rotten Records wants attorney's fees and statutory damages as high as $150,000.

Verizon and Sprint settle over 'cramming,' will pay out $158 million

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 12 May 2015 10:55

Verizon and Sprint settle over 'cramming,' will pay out $158 million Verizon and Sprint have settled with the FCC and will pay out $158 million over charges of 'cramming,' a practice in which the carrier allowed third-parties to charge customers for services without their knowledge and then hid the charges deep in the billing statement.

AT&T settled last year for $105 million and T-Mobile settled for $90 million. Verizon will pay $90 million and Sprint will kick in the remaining $68 million.

Many of the unwanted charges were as expensive as $9.99 per month, and included services that provided daily horoscope text messages or 30 second ringtones. The charges would then show up on your bill under a non-descript banner. Verizon and Sprint "were unable to prove that these services were ever requested" when asked by the FCC.

None of the carriers will be allowed to 'cram' in the future.

"Consumers rightfully expect their monthly phone bills will reflect only those services that they've purchased," Travis LeBlanc, the FCC Enforcement Bureau chief, said in a statement. "Today's settlements put in place strong protections that will prevent consumers from being victimized by these kinds of practices in the future."

Verizon buys AOL for $4.4 billion, 15 years after AOL had biggest failed merger in history

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 12 May 2015 9:23

Verizon buys AOL for $4.4 billion, 15 years after AOL had biggest failed merger in history Verizon Communications has announced today the purchase of AOL for $4.4 billion as the company looks to expand its advertising and mobile video services.

AOL has remade itself in the last decade and now offers premier tech for selling ads and delivering high-quality Web video, including on mobile devices.

"Certainly the subscription business and the content businesses are very noteworthy. For us, the principal interest was around the ad tech platform," said Verizon's president of operations John Stratton.

Verizon has already announced they will launch a video service for mobile devices later this year that offers free, paid and ad-supported content. Most of the content will be shorter than the average TV show (21 minutes).

AOL also has a significant content network which includes Engadget, Huffington Post, TechCrunch and Moviefone but there is already rumors that HuffPo could be spun off into its own company.

In 2000, AOL acquired Time Warner and the deal is widely considered the worst in history. AOL's value plummeted after the tech bubble burst in 2001, and the merged companies had to take a loss of over $100 billion.

Streaming revenue surpasses digital download revenue at major record label Warner Music Group, the second-largest record label on the planet, has announced a major milestone in the industry's shift towards streaming.

The label says for the Q1 2015 (fiscal Q2), streaming music revenue surpassed revenue from digital downloads for the first time ever.

Overall, streaming revenue grew 33 percent while digital download revenue only grew 7 percent. Streaming is anchored by Spotify, Google and YouTube while digital downloads are still mainly the domain of one player: Apple. For its part, Apple has also confirmed that digital downloads have peaked and Apple is rumored to be exploring a major comeback for its Beats Music service.

Streaming music service Rhapsody sees losses extend

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 11 May 2015 9:04

Streaming music service Rhapsody sees losses extend Pioneering streaming service Rhapsody has taken out a $10 million loan as its losses unexpectedly deepen.

Thanks to a filing with the SEC, we know that the company had an $8.9 million net loss for the Q1, even though revenue grew to $46.3 million. The loss was a bit unexpected given that the company lost $1.6 million in the same period last year.

Rhapsody has been trying to stay relevant against larger rivals like Spotify, Google, Amazon and Apple and the company has been forced to make bigger investments than it has in the past.

CFO Ethan Rudin stated a few months ago that 2015 would be a very important year: "2015 is a watershed year, not just for Rhapsody but for streaming music in general. It's not a period in time in which we're taking our foot off the gas. It's an investment year. We're thinking a lot about new product, we're thinking a lot about promotional opportunities, and music sharing like this Twitter opportunity."

Rhapsody is not traded publicly but its results are visible thanks to RealNetworks, the 43 percent owner of the company.

Are these the specs for the upcoming Nexus phone built by Huawei?

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 08 May 2015 11:37

Are these the specs for the upcoming Nexus phone built by Huawei? Over the past few months, there has been a persistent rumor that Chinese OEM Huawei is preparing to build the upcoming Nexus phone, and now we have an alleged spec sheet.

The specs come via Chinese IT analyst firm Pan Jiutang, who posted the data on microblogging site Weibo.

Last November, Google released the Nexus 6, built by Motorola to showcase Android 5.0 Lollipop. The new device will not be called the Nexus 7, however, since that name has been taken since 2013 for Google's previous flagship tablet and it is unclear what name the new phone will receive.

If the specs are accurate, and we will not know that for some time, the new Nexus will feature a smaller 5.7-inch QHD OLED screen, a Snapdragon 810 processor and a higher resolution rear camera.

We may learn a bit more at Google's upcoming I/O developer event.

Uber bids $3 billion for Nokia's popular HERE maps service

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 08 May 2015 11:07

Uber bids $3 billion for Nokia's popular HERE maps service Last month, Nokia confirmed it was strategically reviewing its HERE maps service with the possibility of selling it.

Today, we have a reported bidder, with the startup taxi service Uber allegedly bidding $3 billion for the business.

The sources noted that Uber is competing against major luxury automakers BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz who have teamed up with Chinese search engine Baidu to create a consortium to bid on the service.

While it certainly seems that HERE will be sold soon, Nokia Chairman Risto Siilasmaa would not confirm. "I'd like to stress that the review will not necessarily lead to selling of HERE. We strongly believe in the possibilities to develop HERE also as part of Nokia," he said.

The service has a book value of $2.2 billion without taking any growth into account, suggesting a $3 billion bid will be too small.

We have reviewed a few smartwatches here on AfterDawn, but none has ever been worth keeping. That leads us to the LG Watch Urbane, the latest offering from LG and the first Android Wear smartwatch to get 5.1.1. LG promises "timeless aesthetics" in a luxury package along with a premium price tag. T-Mobile and BlackBerry get back in business as carrier will launch BlackBerry Classic this month

T-Mobile and BlackBerry get back in business as carrier will launch BlackBerry Classic this month After a year of strained relations, BlackBerry and T-Mobile are back in business.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has confirmed that the BlackBerry Classic will launch on the 'Uncarrier' on May 13th, available for $0 down and 24 monthly payments of $18.33, or for a full price of $440.

The two companies have been at odds ever since T-Mobile sent out a marketing email with a coupon urging current BlackBerry customer to upgrade to the iPhone. BlackBerry CEO John Chen called the email "inappropriate" and eventually did not renew their licensing agreement.

Being that BlackBerry sales have cratered year after year and T-Mobile is the hottest carrier in the market right now, it is clear that BlackBerry was willing to let the past stay in the past.

"Together with T-Mobile, we hope to deliver highly differentiated solutions that appeal to our mutual users: the power professionals who depend on their smartphones to get things done and make things happen," said Chen at today's press conference.

Lenovo computers once again had massive security vulnerabilities

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 07 May 2015 11:23

Lenovo computers once again had massive security vulnerabilities Three months ago, Lenovo was found to have pre-installed the 'Superfish' malware onto PCs, making the computers highly vulnerable to attacks. This week, security researchers have unveiled yet another 'massive security risk' in Lenovo PCs.

Security researcher firm IOActive found major exploits in Lenovo's own update system that could have allowed attackers to completely bypass any validation check and then replace legitimate Lenovo programs with malware, including software to gain remote access to your PC or run commands.

All of the security exploits are found in Lenovo System Update 5.6.0.27 and earlier and were first discovered in February. IOActive worked directly with Lenovo on a fix before going public with the exploits. "Lenovo's development and security teams worked directly with IOActive regarding their Lenovo System Update vulnerability findings," Lenovo said in a statement, "and we value their expertise in identifying and responsibly reporting them."

If you haven't already, make sure to update your system with the patches.

Comcast wants to shed reputation of having the worst customer service in the U.S.

Comcast wants to shed reputation of having the worst customer service in the U.S. Year after year, cable and Internet giant Comcast is ranked as having the worst customer service in the U.S., and it appears that the company is looking to shed that horrible reputation finally.

As part of a new "multi-year customer experience transformation" plan, the company is creating 5500 customer service jobs.

Starting in the Q3 of this year, the company has set a goal to always be on time for customer appointments (wow, just wow) and to make sure techs are trained properly so they actually know what to do when they get to your home (sigh). If the tech is late or doesn't show up, customers will be credited with $20 off their monthly bill for that month.

On the back end, the company is rolling out new customer service tools to "simplify billing and create better policies to provide greater consistency and transparency to customers." Additionally, the company says phone calls to the company should be less painful now, and in-store visits shouldn't be like pulling teeth thanks to new software.

Comcast has been so bad, that a few phone calls with Comcast reps have even gone viral for how abusive they are and Comcast didn't even seem to care that they did. Hopefully, this really is a change for the better.

Currently, Xbox owners have TV tuner capabilities, but you can only pause live TV, not record it.

While DVR makes 100 percent sense given the Xbox's media center tech and its HDMI-in support for cable boxes, there is a major logistic issue. The Xbox One has a standard 500GB hard drive, which may not be enough to record your favorite episodes and hold games that can be as large as 40GB each.

Of course, Microsoft could allow for recording to external hard drives or flash storage, but we won't know until later this year.

Comcast and Time Warner spent over half a billion on failed merger

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 04 May 2015 10:00

Comcast and Time Warner spent over half a billion on failed merger According to Comcast's most recent earnings report, the cable giant has spent over $330 million in 'transaction-related costs' in its attempt to acquire Time Warner Cable, and Time Warner has spent over $220 million.

Comcast proposed to buy TWC in February 2014 for $45.2 billion and just canceled the proposed merger last month after it became clear it would never make it through Federal regulators.

In the Q1 alone, ended March 31st, Comcast had $99 million in costs related to the acquisition, and Time Warner Cable had $24 million in costs.

"The costs are mainly for legal fees and outside consulting firms--everything from Human Resources and IT consulting to banks and management consulting services," said Comcast VP of Government Communications Sena Fitzmaurice. "Communications and lobbying fees would be included--however, what is included has to be direct and incremental--so only those fees that are directly and incrementally associated with the deal."

At least there was one positive for Comcast shareholders: no break-up fee. The company says the deal was structured without an expensive break-up fee involved, which can sometimes reach into the billions. One recent example is AT&T's failed purchase of rival carrier T-Mobile in 2011. When the DOJ killed the merger, AT&T had to pay T-Mobile $4 billion in cash and spectrum, effectively reviving the carrier and allowing it to go on the offensive with pricing.

Rare to unveil new game at E3: Is 'Banjo Kazooie' coming?

Rare to unveil new game at E3: Is 'Banjo Kazooie' coming? Rare, the developer behind the massive hits Battletoads, Banjo-Kazooie and Goldeneye for Sega and N64 is preparing to launch a new game at the E3 gaming expo next month.

Both Microsoft, who acquired the company, and Rare, have both confirmed a new game is coming but has let few details slip.

While it is possible Rare is creating an entirely new game, nearly everyone expects a remake of one of the aforementioned IPs, with a Banjo sequel the most likely.

If indeed it is a new Banjo, there will be an interesting rivalry brewing. Most of the developers behind the original game are currently working on Yooka-Laylee, a platformer in the exact spirit and concept as B-K, but without the original IP or the big funding of Microsoft. Yooka-Laylee has raised $2 million on Kickstarter in just 48 hours showing that there is certainly a market out there for cartoon duos going on adventures.

Furthermore, Yooka-Laylee will be available for PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One and Wii U, while any Rare game is expected to be an exclusive.

Comcast aiming to launch a YouTube competitor

"The proposed video service would mark a brand new chapter for Comcast, which would be able to play in a loosely regulated market, reach a national audience and possibly even make its service available outside the U.S.," reads the report. "It also may be necessary move, given that younger viewers have been gravitating toward Web videos made by a new generation of artists. One purpose of the service is to add new types of shows to Comcast's cable package, allowing people to watch them on TV screens."

If that is accurate, Comcast will look to use their 27 million cable subscribers to boost the service, especially with younger viewers that are turning away from traditional TV at a rapid pace.

Unfortunately for the company, YouTube is a name even your grandmother knows, so Comcast will have an uphill battle if it really wants to get into the online video sharing market.

iSuppli: Apple Watch Sport costs just $83.70 to build

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 03 May 2015 4:00

iSuppli: Apple Watch Sport costs just $83.70 to build IHS iSuppli has completed their component cost teardown of the Apple Watch this weekend, unsurprisingly reporting that the Watch is significantly cheaper to build than other Apple products.

The 38mm Apple Watch Sport, which has been the most popular seller due to its lower retail price, costs just $83.70 to build with a retail price of $349. With components costing just 24 percent of retail, there is a chance that Apple can be squeeze out higher margins than their average 40 percent they make on currently sold products after research and development, marketing, shipping and software costs are taken into account.

IHS confirmed that the Apple Watch Sport has 8GB of Toshiba flash storage, 512MB RAM from Micron, an accelerometer and gyroscope from STMicro and other interior components produced by Analog Devices, Maxim, Broadcam, NXP and STMicro.

The most expensive component was the display (OLED + cover glass) at $20.50 per unit, followed by Apple's own S1 processor at $10.20. Somewhat surprisingly, the box and charger and other packaging cost $9.

Check out the full teardown here: IHS iSuppli

Bright House is Charter or Time Warner's next acquisition target in the ongoing cable industry consolidation

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 03 May 2015 11:00

Bright House is Charter or Time Warner's next acquisition target in the ongoing cable industry consolidation Just a week after Comcast's proposed acquisition of Time Warner Cable was shut down by regulators, both Time Warner and rival Charter Communication have been in talks with smaller player Bright House for a potential acquisition.

Charter had agreed to acquire Bright House in March for $10.4 billion, but the deal was 100% contingent on Comcast's deal succeeding, and now has to be remade.

Bright House has a little over 2 million subscribers, but has steady cash flow and profits that make it attractive as a stepping stone to go after a larger fish, like Time Warner Cable, for example.

For Time Warner, an acquisition would be obvious as it would make their own company more expensive to purchase, would add on debt making them less attractive and take an asset away from a rival.

Many industry analysts believe a tie-up between Bright House, Charter and Time Warner is inevitable, and the combined entity would have around 25 million subscribers, close to Comcast's massive 27 million.

Microsoft buys digital pen technology from N-Trig for $30 million

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 03 May 2015 10:19

Microsoft buys digital pen technology from N-Trig for $30 million Although it was widely reported months ago, Microsoft has finally confirmed their acquisition of technology from digital pen tech developer N-Trig.

It had previously been reported that Microsoft was buying the entire company for $200 million, but that was false it appears, as Microsoft only acquired some technology at a price tag of $30 million.

"We can't wait to show you what we'll deliver for our Surface Fans in the future," said Stevie Bathiche of the Microsoft Surface team. "Digital pens have a ways to go to be as good as pen and paper on some dimensions, and we'll get there. But more importantly, adding the ability to capture and share the work you do with a digital pen opens up possibilities that traditional pen and paper just can't match. Today's investment is another step that will let us push that innovation forward."

N-Trig has over 100 patents and the company's digital pen has been available with the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet since last year.

Uber's offices in China got raided In their ongoing effort to crackdown on ridesharing apps, the Chinese government has raided Uber's offices in Guangzhou.

Uber, one of the largest private startups in the world, launched in 2013 in China following successful launches around the globe. Uber has infamously been on the wrong side of the law multiple times, however, and this appears to be no different. Chinese officials "inspected a company which is suspected of organizing private cars with are not qualified to provide passenger services, and of not having registered with the commercial authorities," read the reports.

During the raid, a few mobile phones were "temporarily confiscated" although it is unclear why.

The Guangzhou transport commission added that Uber's business model is a potential "illegal business activity," and that they will continue to look for "illegal operators who disrupt the transport market."

Windows Phone fans rejoice: Two high-end devices are coming this year

Windows Phone fans rejoice: Two high-end devices are coming this year After a year of pumping out cheap low-range Lumia devices to target the masses, it appears Microsoft has a couple of high-end devices waiting in the wings for power users.

First, we have the Lumia codenamed "Talkman" which has a 5.2-inch QHD display, a sexta-core 64-bit Qualcomm processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable with microSD), dual 5MP/20MP cameras and a large 3000 mAh battery. Furthermore, Microsoft wants to keep this device lighter and slimmer than the existing Lumia 930, say the sources.

Moving even higher up the spec chain is the Lumia "Cityman" which will feature a 5.7-inch QHD display, an octa-core Qualcomm processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable), the same dual 5MP/20MP cameras and a 3300mAh battery.

Both devices will run Windows 10, and both device will have triple LED flash each of which has a different tone to allow for more natural colors.

Sources say you can expect the devices around the launch time of Windows 10, which is the end of July or early August.

Microsoft discontinues Windows Media Center

Microsoft discontinues Windows Media Center Microsoft has been unveiling more about its upcoming operating system this past week at Build conference in San Francisco. The company also told to ZDNet that it will be killing off the Windows Media Center.

Windows Media Center was released in 2001 as a full screen media experience for Windows XP. The development halted already in 2009 but the software has been included to this day in Windows 8. Now it seems however that the interface will not be seen on Windows 10.

The software was meant for media consumption of music, video, photos, and TV. It was designed to be intuitive with a remove controller, often provided with the Windows Media Center PCs. Even if the software will not make a return in Windows 10 the functionality largely will surely be in place – if not by Microsoft, by 3rd party developers.

GameStop now buying and selling classic consoles and games

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 02 May 2015 8:51

GameStop now buying and selling classic consoles and games Earlier this week, major retailer GameStop began buying and selling legacy consoles and games, an interesting move that should be of note for nostalgic gamers.

For the time being, stores in Birmingham and New York City (around 250 altogether) will accept trade-ins of the NES, SNES, Sega Genesis and Sega Dreamcast, the original PlayStation and also the Nintendo 64.

By August, GameStop will begin selling the legacy consoles and games, as well.

"For hardware, we'll put it through a full triage: identify any issues, any cleaning that has to happen, any parts replacement that has to be done. On cartridges, we're gonna be cleaning, testing, and also taking a look at the batteries in there,"
GameStop senior director of pre-owned merchandising Jon Haes said.

All consoles and games will come with a 30-day warranty just like all other GameStop used merchandise. Keep in mind that many of the older consoles will require cables and inputs that your new TVs likely don't have, so be on the lookout for an adapter.

If you were in the market to relive your youth, this seems to be the best way to do it since each game and console will have to go through a strenuous testing and refurbishment and is guaranteed to work.

ISPs ordered to block Popcorn Time sites

Written by James Delahunty @ 02 May 2015 7:55

ISPs ordered to block Popcorn Time sites A court has ordered Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access to websites associated with the Popcorn Time software.

Popcorn Time (and its numerous forks) is a sort of dark rival to Netflix and other legitimate, licensed content streaming services. Essentially, Popcorn Time puts a simple interface over a BitTorrent backend. Once a user picks a movie to watch (and what resolution) it will torrent the content in the background and play it as it downloads.

Now, a UK court has decided that ISPs in the union must block access to five websites associated with Popcorn Time, including popcorntime.io, flixtor.me, popcorn-time.se, and isoplex.isohunt.to.

This order applies to Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin, BT and EE, who have previously been forced to block access to a large number of BitTorrent websites. The interesting difference in this case is those sites don't offer torrents or links to any pirated content, but instead offer downloads of Popcorn Time clients.

"It is manifest that the Popcorn Time application is used in order to watch pirated content on the internet and indeed it is also manifest that that is its purpose. No-one really uses Popcorn Time in order to watch lawfully available content," Judge Birss wrote.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: illegal streaming targeted in lawsuit

Written by James Delahunty @ 02 May 2015 7:26

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: illegal streaming targeted in lawsuit The most hotly anticipated boxing event in years is only hours away, but legal action against those who plan to stream the fight illegally is already underway.

Boxing fans have been waiting years for this event. Tonight in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao will step into the ring and end this argument once and for all, earning astronomical amounts of money each in the process. This PPV event surely will be lucrative.

Not everybody is willing to pay for something they can potentially see for free, however, and earlier this week HBO and ShowTime sought to launch pre-emptive strikes against sites that were planning to stream the fight to viewers for free.

In a complaint filed in a federal court in Florida, they accuse boxinghd.net and sportship.org of advertising the fight with the intent to stream it to fans for free, whilst they profit from advertisements.

"There are no authorized online streams of the Coverage for delivery to United States audiences," the complaint reads. It sought a temporary restraining order against the sites in order to protect the parties from irreparable damage.

It seems to have worked too, as BoxingHD removed references to the event and sportship.org is unreachable at the moment.

YouTube turns 10; will celebrate throughout May with memorable content

Written by James Delahunty @ 02 May 2015 7:13

YouTube turns 10; will celebrate throughout May with memorable content YouTube is celebrating its tenth birthday this month, and will celebrate the milestone by dipping into its vast collection of content for some of its most memorable moments.

As a reminder that we are all rapidly ageing with no relief in sight, YouTube will blast us with an A-Z selection of memorable content uploaded to the service over the past decade.

"Every day over the next 26 days, we'll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments, from the silly to the profound, that you've shared on YouTube in the last 10 years. It's YouTube from A to Z. Literally." YouTube announced on its blog this week.

On April 23, 2005, the first ever video was uploaded to an largely-unknown private site called YouTube. The 18-second long clip showed elephants at the San Diego zoo. The next month, the little video project went into beta, and became available for use by the wider public later on that year.

Since then of course, YouTube was acquired by Google and has become a household name. It is consulted for almost all types of video content imaginable, from music videos, to comedy, to idiots faceplanting into the turf for our amusement, to conspiracy theories and almost anything else you can think of that isn't pornographic - although the latter has been known to get spammed to YouTube.

Windows 10 will not be ready for phones this summer

Windows 10 will not be ready for phones this summer Microsoft is readying its Windows 10 launch this summer and has been promoting its new features this week at its Build conference in San Francisco. According to The Verge the operating system will not be ready for phones quite as soon though.

Windows 10 is an operating system that by large is the same for both mobile devices as well as desktop and laptop computers. Microsoft says that much of the underlying technology is shared by all of the Windows 10 versions. However the phone OS release will have to wait until early fall.

This will also probably mean that the new Lumia hardware powered by the new version of Microsoft's operating system will be released in fall as well. The official word from Microsoft's Joe Belfiore is that phone version will arrive "after PC version". Thus no dates have been revealed as of yet.

Sony PlayStation 4 sales reach 22 million

Sony PlayStation 4 sales reach 22 million Sony has announced today that the company has sold 22.3 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide, having sold about 15 million of those in the last 12 months alone.

Thanks to the strong sales, Sony's Game and Network Services division saw revenues increase 33 percent year-over-year, making it easily the largest contributor of revenue for the company so far.

"This significant increase was primarily due to an increase in PS4 hardware unit sales, a significant increase in network services revenue, the impact of foreign exchange rates and an increase in PS4 software sales, partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation®3 ("PS3") hardware and PS3 software sales," read the report.

The PS3 is on its last legs, but the PS4 is more than happy to pick up the slack.

Music sharing service Grooveshark officially shuts down following legal defeat

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 30 Apr 2015 10:39

Music sharing service Grooveshark officially shuts down following legal defeat Although most people probably thought it was shuttered years ago anyways, the music sharing service Grooveshark has officially shut down.

The record labels will take over control of the Grooveshark name, its patents and copyrights, and the existing database will be completely wiped. The decision comes on the heels of a court ruling this year in which Grooveshark was defeated, and could have faced damages of up to $150,000 for 5000 different infringing songs.

Grooveshark also apologized for its copyright infringements, and recommending popular services like Spotify.

Here is the full statement from Grooveshark:

Today we are shutting down Grooveshark.

We started out nearly ten years ago with the goal of helping fans share and discover music. But despite best of intentions, we made very serious mistakes. We failed to secure licenses from rights holders for the vast amount of music on the service.

That was wrong. We apologize. Without reservation.

As part of a settlement agreement with the major record companies, we have agreed to cease operations immediately, wipe clean all the data on our servers and hand over ownership of this website, our mobile apps and intellectual property, including our patents and copyrights.

Microsoft wants to guess how old you are from the pic you upload

Written by Andre Yoskowitz @ 30 Apr 2015 9:59

Microsoft wants to guess how old you are from the pic you upload Microsoft has launched the fun and likely inaccurate website that uses facial recognition to guess your age.

You upload a picture to the site and Microsoft will spit back out your gender and your age, although some viral pictures show responses that have been hilariously wrong.

Microsoft is using machine learning to recognize millions of photos across the Web, with the end goal being "obtaining real time insights" on the data.

Says the Microsoft blog post: "We were playing with Microsoft's newly released Face detection API's through a webpage called http://how-old.net. This page lets users upload a picture and have the API predict the age and gender of any faces recognized in that picture. We sent email to a group of several hundred people asking them to try the page for a few minutes and give us feedback – optimistically hoping that at least 50 people would give it a shot. We monitored our real time analytics dashboard to track usage and, within a few minutes, the number of people using the site vastly exceeded the number of people we had sent our email to...We were shocked. Within a few hours, over 35,000 users had hit the page from all over the world (about 29k of them from Turkey, as it turned out – apparently there were a bunch of tweets from Turkey mentioning this page). What a great example of people having fun thanks to the power of ML!"
