Secure Digital (SD) Memory Cards

SD is a type of flash memory card that is used in many of today's most popular handheld devices including, but not limited to, digital cameras and pocket pc's.

SD cards can vary in size from 8 MB to 8 GB but are most popular in the 256 MB, 512 MB, and 1 GB variations and the 2 GB cards are becoming more popular as their prices drop.

The SD memory cards are originally based on the MultiMediaCard (MMC for short) but with a few differences including faster data transfer rates and the fact they can be inserted into Compact flash slots with the use of an adapter.

SD memory cards were created in 1999 by Panasonic, Sandisk and Toshiba, and they have jointly promoted it ever since.

SD memory cards are normally used as preffered storage media for:
Digital Cameras, camcorders, PDA's, Cell Phones, MP3 audio players, and more recently, the Nintendo Wii.
