Graphics Interchange Format
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is another popular image format.
GIFs are compressed image files, like JPEG, originally created by CompuServe in 1987.
The images only support 8 bits per pixel and 256 distinct colors, making it unusable for photographers and artists.
Because of this, GIF files are tiny by comparison to lossless and compressed formats, and therefore popular online.
GIF files support animation and mixed with great compression have become the de facto choice for short clips on the Internet. "GIF" has become synonymous with animated clips.
