Super eXtended Graphics Array

Super eXtended Graphics Array, or SXGA, is a standard monitor resolution of 1280x1024 pixels, displayed with an aspect ratio of 5:4 instead of 4:3. Trying to use this resolutyion on a standard 4:3 monitor will yield some bad results, whereas a variation called SXGA- is made for 4:3 displays. At present, SXGA is the most common resolution in use with 17-19-inch LCD monitors. SXGA is also the resolution used wioth many mobile phone cameras for taking pictures, but is starting to become replaced by newer UXGA cameras.

Any CRT monitor capable of displaying 1280x1024 images can also display 1280x960 images, in order to achieve a 4:3 aspect ratio. While SXGA is quite popular at present, it is already being replaced in laptops by SXGA+ which dramatically improves the resolution, offering 1400x1050 images.
