3X DVD

3X DVD was created by the HD DVD group. Technically, 3X DVD is HD DVD on a standard, red-laser Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) with the UDF 2.5 file structure and Advanced Access Content System (AACS) copy protection system. The first 3X DVD-ROM was mastered by Doug Carson & Associates (DCA) in February, 2007.

Because it uses the older DVD technology, it would be cheaper to produce. Many consider 3X DVD to be the silent weapon of the DVD format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Some even believe that 3X DVD is enough to hand the DVD format war to Toshiba and the rest of the HD DVD camp.

By reducing the resolution to 720p and using the more advanced VC-1 and H.264/AVC codecs, a HD movie can fit on a dual layer 8.5GB DVD disc and maintain high quality. The HD DVD camp and supporting studios can take advantage of lower production costs to offer consumers a cheaper solution in moving to HD content. 3X DVD-ROM discs can be read by any HD DVD hardware.
