DVD Copy Control Association
The DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA) is an organization that oversee's the anti-piracy features of the DVD-Video format, as well as other features targeted at optimal marketing. DVD CCA oversees the implementation and use of the relatively weak Content Scrambling System (CSS) copy protection found on most retail DVD-Video releases. CSS was created to prevent unauthorized copying of movies, but was beaten years ago with the release of DeCSS, a program that brought Jon Lech Johansen - better known as DVD Jon - into a legal battle with DVD CCA.
DVD CCA also oversees the use of regional encoding on retail DVDs, which aims to prevent DVD players form playing discs intended to be sold in other regions. Region coding has no consumer-friendly purposes and is intended only to aid in maximizing profits for major movie studios.
